ADA COMPLIANCE GUIDE CREATING AN OCR PDF DOCUMENT Using Acrobat to create an OCR text PDF document USING ACROBAT TO CREATE AN OCR TEXT DOCUMENT 1 2 3 * ADA Accessibility Vision impaired students may read articles by "read aloud" software. However, PDFs can present some issues. PDF accessibility depends on how the articles were scanned or created. Please follow these guidelines when creating a PDF that is ADA compliant for your students. PDFs should be created with OCR (optical character recognition). OCR allows screen reader software to read PDFs. If you are unsure if a specific file has OCR, you can often just try and highlight the text for pasting into another document. If you are able to copy and paste from within it, it has been OCR’d. In Acrobat XI Pro click on the Tools Panel. Click on Recognize Text to expand the menu, then click on In this File. On the dialogue pop-up, select All pages then click OK to process the document. COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS TO CONVERT PDF TO AN OCR COMPATIBLE PDF: A progress bar will appear on the bottom of the document as it processes. When the bar disappears, your document is now OCR compatible.
