Using The History List to create and share event calendars and lists

description

The History List (www.TheHistoryList.com), the calendar system for history organizations, includes a free tool that allows organizations and individuals to easily create and embed event calendars and lists into their sites. Individuals add information about their organization and events to The History List and then use a widget builder to select the content, format, and appearance for their event list. When they're satisfied with the result, they copy the HTML that the widget builder generates and add it to their site. This is very similar to the process that one uses to embed a YouTube video into their site. Please send feedback and suggestions about this presentation to [email protected].

There are two formats:- A narrow scrolling column with links that go to the

individual event listings on The History List (below).- Full description listings suitable for an Events page of

a site (right).

For the scrolling column format, there are several “themes” to choose from, as well as solid color frames.

All changes made to events on The History List—additions, deletions, other edits—show up here automatically and immediately

Click the Embed button on either an event page or an organization page to pop up up this “widget” builder with the organization already selected.

Add organizations and use other criteria to select the events you want to display. To update the widget, click the Update button at the bottom of this column.

Then copy this code and add it to your site, or copy it and send it to the person who handles your website. Or, you can send them a link to your page on The History List and ask them to create a widget and embed it into your site.

This historical society enters their programs and events on The History List. The interface is easy to use, it supports repeating events, and different people in the organization can add and update the events they are involved with.

They use the widget builder to create a widget they add to their Events page. This eliminates entering things twice and all of the content on their site is updated automatically. When events finish, they automatically roll off their page.
