DEAR PARENTS/CARERS: Welcome back to Term 3. All of the our staff: teachers, education assistants, school office staff, cleaners and gardeners have been busy working and planning (many through the holidays) for an exciting and educational term ahead. Everyone seems to comment on how ‘busy’ each term is these days, but in reality each term is unique, with events and activities that make it different from the previous or next term. Term 3 is traditionally a sporting term with our students getting involved in their Faction as they work towards our Faction Carnival including; cross country, jumps and throws and a full day carnival (week 7), followed by interschool athletic carnivals. A lot of planning and preparation is going into this term’s sporting events as we look to fully introduce a Tabloid Carnival. This will be introduced through the weekly PE lessons with Mr Kelleher, the Daily Fitness lessons with each class/teacher and weekly Faction practice on Thursday & Friday afternoon. Along the way we will have fortnightly assemblies and our annual Parent Open Night (week 6) which coincides with Book Week and a Book Parade. Please check the Term 3 Planner for important dates. STAFF UPDATE: With Mrs Graffin on long service leave for all of term 3, I have stepped up to take on the Principal role for the term. A big “welcome back” to Mrs Amy Page who will be filling my Deputy Principal role (3 days/week) along-side with Mrs Amanda Robinson. HOLIDAY READING CHALLENGE: It was fantastic to see so many students returning their signed holiday reading challenge forms yesterday and today. Some classes already have over 50% student returns, which is a great effort. It is hoped that all students will return their holiday reading challenge form, even if it is just a confirmation note/letter from parents to confirm they read during the holidays, as this is the first criteria towards our Good Standing letters (one per term) and the medal which is presented once a student receives three (3) letters in a year. Andrew Kilgallon - Principal Mrs Graffin (Mrs G) Update: They have arrived in Alice Springs, undertaking some repairs and restocking. DEAR PARENTS/CARERS:

Welcome back to Term 3. All of the our staff: teachers, education assistants, school

office staff, cleaners and gardeners have been busy working and planning (many

through the holidays) for an exciting and educational term ahead.

Everyone seems to comment on how ‘busy’ each term is these days, but in reality

each term is unique, with events and activities that make it different from the previous

in their Faction as they work towards our Faction Carnival including; cross country,

jumps and throws and a full day carnival (week 7), followed by interschool athletic

A lot of planning and preparation is going into this term’s sporting events as we look

to fully introduce a Tabloid Carnival. This will be introduced through the weekly PE

lessons with Mr Kelleher, the Daily Fitness lessons with each class/teacher and

weekly Faction practice on Thursday & Friday afternoon.

Along the way we will have fortnightly assemblies and our annual Parent Open Night

(week 6) which coincides with Book Week and a Book Parade. Please check the

Term 3 Planner for important dates.

STAFF UPDATE:

With Mrs Graffin on long service leave for all of term 3, I have stepped up to take on

the Principal role for the term. A big “welcome back” to Mrs Amy Page who will be

filling my Deputy Principal role (3 days/week) along-side with Mrs Amanda Robinson.

HOLIDAY READING CHALLENGE: It was fantastic to see so many students returning their signed holiday reading

FOOD PANTRY— CRAIGIE BAPTIST CHURCH

Craigie Baptist Church has a Food Pantry that is available all year round for times of need. Our Food Pantry is stocked with donated non-perishable food items such as pasta, pasta sauces & other meal sauces, rice, cereal & tinned vegetables as well as other various items.

There are two ways to access the Food Pantry

1. Drop in to the church on Tuesday’s during school term from 9am to 11am.

2. Call the church on (08) 9307 7509 and organise a time to come in. You’ll likely speak to Pastor James.

We do ask that, where possible, people make a small donation for the food taken. Please feel free to pass this on to friends and family you know who may benefit from the Food Pantry.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS

We would like to thank parents and carers who have paid the Voluntary Contributions for 2017. Currently we have received 46.5%. Can we please request that if you have not already contributed, that you please forward your payment as soon as possible. Payment options are detailed in the article below. When reviewing your child’s Unpaid Billing Items Statement, the ‘Voluntary Contribution’ is the $50 per student (per year). ‘Charges’ are for extra cost optional components and these are compulsory. Thank you.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

PATHS As mentioned in previous newsletters, PATHS (Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies) is a social and emotional curriculum that was written for primary school children. Goals of the program are to im-prove children’s social-emotional and behavioural skills and to create a positive classroom/school. PATHS lessons are generally about getting along with others. They help children understand, label and deal with their feelings in appropriate ways. The lessons teach about friendship and how to solve prob-lems and conflicts. The program also helps students improve self-esteem, practice acceptable behav-iours and develop their thinking skills. One of the way classes learn some of the PATHS key messages is through story telling. Teachers have found this to be very effective. In Kindy, the book “Twiggle Learns To Do Turtle” tells the story of how Twiggle gets mad and learns to calm down by using the strategy ‘Do Turtle’. While in Year 6, a novel study of Bridge to Terabithia, helps students to understand the process of loss and the importance of friendship and family relationships. GIFTED AND TEALENTED: Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) The PEAC Program provides part time extension and enrichment for exceptionally able students in Years 5 and 6. All students in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be assessed for suitability for the PEAC Pro-gram in 2018. Testing will occur sometime in Week 3 or 4 of this term. Letters will come home to parents of Year 4 students with information regarding this testing. FOOD SENSATIONS FOR ADULTS We are pleased to offer the above program presented by Foodbank. Food Sensations® for Adults is a FREE nutrition and cooking program that is hands on, fun and provides a safe environment to try new recipes and skills. RISE & SHINE BREAKFAST CLUB

CHAPLAIN’S CHAMPION

The Chaplain’s Champion at the end of last term was Zak from Mrs

Carroll’s Year 6 students. Zak is one of our Student Councillors who has

led by example at Craigie Heights Primary School. He is enthusiastic,

cheerful and diligent. He perseveres when things are challenging; sets

goals and works hard to achieve them, shows initiative and helps both

staff and other students. He strives to achieve his personal best and

demonstrates our expected behaviours.

Thanks Zak, for making a positive difference to your classroom and our

school community.
