History Frank W. Cox High School, founded in 1961, was named after a former superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools – Frank Woodard Cox., who served from 1933 to 1968. The school was originally designed to be Northeast Junior High School and consisted of 1600 eighth and ninth graders. The first senior class graduated June 11, 1965. The present Cox High School building opened in the fall of 1983. Until January 2012, the original building housed Great Neck Middle School. The colors of Cox High School, Forest Green, Gold, and Silver, were chosen based on the colors of the College of William & Mary, the Alma Mater of Frank W. Cox. The school has been awarded more than 40 state athletic titles. Alma Mater Cox High School stands forever In victory and might With portals ever open To knowledge and light. For hallowed halls of learning, And friendships tried and true, For these we sing thy praises, Cox High School, here’s to you! Did you know The student section at the University of Oregon was the inspiration behind the student section at home sporting events for Cox High School, formally known as “The Nest”. The Nest design with the outstretched wings and the center C was based off their logo. Cox High School has been awarded more Wachovia Cups than any other school in the state. The Spirit Cape, which at one point in time was used at all home games but then vanished, reappeared this year and helped cheer on the Falcons to victory. Now it is passed on to the next generation of seniors at the conclusion of each year. Cox has been recognized by major organizations such as Newsweek, which named the high school as a “top” public high school. The school has won 35 state athletic titles. administration Dr. Randi R.
