REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

To operate the Street Sport, you will need these additional toolsand accessories. All of these items should be available from yourlocal hobby shop.

1. Eight “AA” size batteries for your transmitter2. One 7.2V rechargeable Nicad battery pack3. Battery charger for the 7.2V Nicad pack4. Small Phillips head and flat screwdrivers (for adjustments)5. Hobby knife for cutting the decals

WHERE TO RUN

Select an area that is isolated from people and traffic. Avoidareas that are near water (pools, lakes, etc). Run the model onlyon dry surfaces. Mud and water will damage the electronic com-ponents and increase the wear on all mechanical parts. Whenchoosing an area to run, always consider what would happen ifyou lost control of the car at full throttle.

CHARGE THE BATTERIES

The Street Sport requires a fully charged 7.2 volt Nicad batterypack (not included). You can use either side-by-side racing stylepack or the more common stick pack. The battery compartment onthe Street Sport is designed to handle both. The Street Sport'srun time is greatly affected by the milliamp hour (mAh) rating of thebatteries. A 3000 mAh battery pack will theoretically run twice aslong as a 1500 mAh sport pack. We recommend that you use ahigh-capacity battery and a high-quality peak detecting charger tocharge the battery. Because it takes some time to charge batteries, begin charging your battery now as you get the Street Sport readyto drive. Follow the charger manufacturer’s directions for chargingand caring for your battery packs.

THE RADIO SYSTEM

The following definitions will be used throughout the rest ofthese operating instructions.

TWO-CHANNEL RADIO SYSTEM - The radio system in yourmodel consists of the RECEIVER, the TRANSMITTER, the SER-VOS, and the CRYSTALS. It has two channels, one to operate thethrottle, and one to operate the steering.

TRANSMITTER - The TRANSMITTER is the hand-held radio unitwhich sends throttle and steering instructions to the model.

RECEIVER - The RECEIVER is the radio unit inside the modelwhich receives signals from the TRANSMITTER and relays themto the SERVOS.

SERVO - The SERVOS are the small motor units in the modelwhich operate the steering and throttle mechanisms.

FREQUENCY BAND - The FREQUENCY band is the radio frequency that the transmitter uses to send signals to the model. The FREQUENCY BAND for radio control vehicles is 27 MHZ.

CHANNEL - The 27 MHZ FREQUENCY BAND is divided into 6CHANNELS, so that up to six cars can be operated simultaneously. These CHANNELS are referred to by their number and flag color. The chart below lists the channels and their flag colors.

CRYSTAL (X-TAL) - The CRYSTAL is the plug-in device thatdetermines which channel (1-6) the RADIO SYSTEM will operateon. For Each CHANNEL, there are two CRYSTALS, one for theRECEIVER and one for the TRANSMITTER. Of those two CRYS-TALS, the one marked with the lower number (.455 MHZ lower)must be inserted in the RECEIVER.

CLEARING YOUR FREQUENCY - CLEARING your frequencymeans checking to be sure no one else in the area is operatingon the same CHANNEL as you. You should always do this beforeoperating your model.

NICAD (Ni-Cd), NiMh - These terms stand for rechargeable, nick-el cadmium or nickel metal hydride (NiMh) batteries. These batter-ies are most economical and can be recharged up to 500 times.

NEUTRAL POSITION - The NEUTRAL POSITION is the standingposition that the SERVOS seek when the TRANSMITTER con-trols are at neutral.

TRIM - TRIM is the fine-tuning adjustment of the NEUTRALPOSITION of the SERVOS. This adjustment is made by turning thethrottle and steering trim knobs on the face of the TRANSMITTER.

PREPARING TO RUN

• INSTALLING TRANSMITTER BATTERIES

Your transmitter uses 8 “AA” size batteries. Theyshould be alkaline dry cells or nicad rechargeablebatteries. The battery compartment is located in thebottom of the transmitter. To remove the batterydoor, push on the tab and lift open the door. Besure that the switch is turned off beforeinstalling the batteries. Insert the batter-ies into the battery compartment mak-ing careful note of the polarity. Now,snap the battery door back into place.

• RECEIVER BATTERIES

The Traxxas receiver is equipped with B.E.C. (battery eliminatorcircuitry). This circuit eliminates the need to carry a separate 4-cell battery pack in the model to power the radio system. No extrareceiver batteries are required.

ANTENNA SETUP

Locate the plastic tube and the vinyl antenna tip (supplied in thebag with your instructions). Insert the black antenna wire (comingout of the receiver in the model) into one end of the tube, andpush it all the way through. Spray glass cleaner on the wire tohelp it go through.

Insert the tube into the slot on the chassis. Route the remainingantenna wire neatly in the chassis. Place the antenna tip over theend of the tube to secure the wire. Under no circumstancesshould you ever cut your antenna wire. Its length is speciallytuned to the frequency band, and cutting it could severely shortenthe radio’s range.

On top of the transmitter, extend the chrome telescopic antenna.

INSTALLING THE BODY MOUNTS

Attach the front body posts to the front bumper with the two3x10mm countersunk self tapping screws provided.

Place the body clip in the fifth hole from the bottom of the frontbody mounts. Place a body washer over the front posts.

Attach the rear body mount posts onto the body mount base withthe supplied body mount clamps and 3x14mm washerhead selftapping screws. Two body mount clamps and two 3x14mm WSTscrews are required to secure each body posts to the body postbase. Body height adjustment is accomplished by loosening thescrews and adjusting the body posts to the appropriate height.

INSTALLING THE BODY

You may now install the body. Adjustments may be necessary inorder to attain the proper body height and ample wheel clear-ance. If necessary, raise or lower the rear body posts to attain theproper body height (see figure A-1).

The front body posts are longer than necessary so that an alter-nate body shell may be used. You may choose to leave the bodyposts long to accommodate a variety of body shells, but it hindersthe scale appearance of the model. If you’d like to cut the bodyposts to the proper size you may do so by cutting the excessmaterial off with a pair of wire cutters. For a neater finish, use ahobby saw as shown in the photo (see figure A-2).

RADIO SYSTEM OPERATION

Your radio system was pre-adjusted before it left the factory;however, the adjustment should be checked prior to running themodel. These instructions are for Traxxas radio systems only.

1) Before you ever turn your radio system on, you must “clear”your frequency. Clearing your frequency means checking to besure that no one else in the area is operating on the samechannel as you. There are six different channels numbered 1through 6. Each of the six channels is represented by a color.Look at the crystal on the back of the transmitter to determinewhich of the channels your model is operating on.

2) Always turn the transmitter on first, before you plug in the bat-tery pack in the model. TIP: Always turn the transmitter onfirst and off last. Slide the transmitter switch to the “on” posi-tion. A steady red light should illuminate. A flashing red lightindicates weak batteries. Weak batteries will limit the rangeof the radio signal between your transmitter and receiver. Lossof the radio signal can cause you to lose control of the car.

3) Elevate the model so that the rear tires are off the ground. Plugthe nicad battery in the model into the speed control. The servoand speed control should jump and move to their idle (neutral)position.

CAUTION: When nicad batteries begin to lose their charge, they will fade much faster than alkaline dry cells. Stop immediately at the first sign of weak batteries. Never turn the transmitter off when the battery pack is plugged in. The model could run out of control.

4) If the motor started running when you turned the model on,then slowly adjust the trim control on the transmitter until themotor stop. If a large adjustment of the trim control on the

transmitter is required, then it may be necessary to re-centerthe throttle servo. Now operate the throttle trigger to ensurethat you have full forward and reverse operation, and that themotor stops when the throttle trigger is at neutral.

5) Operate the steering control on the transmitter (channel 1).Check for rapid operation of the steering servo and that none ofthe steering mechanism is loose or binding. If the servo operatesslowly, check for weak batteries. Turn the “steering trim” control onthe transmitter to adjust the servo so that the front wheels arepointing straight ahead. Check to be sure that the wheels do notturn more in one direction than in the other. If you cannot alignthe front wheels, you will have to re-center your steering servo(see “Centering Your Servos” in the Adjustments section).

Hold the steering wheel with just your fingertips! If yougrip the wheel with your entire hand, you may be able toexert enough force to break the steering mechanism byoverturning. Overturning the wheel is not covered by warranty.

6) The radio system should be range-tested before each sessionof running. With the radio system on, have a friend carry theradio away from you a distance equal to the maximum rangeyou plan to operate the the model. At distance, once again testfor complete radio control. Never attempt to run the model if theradio appears to be malfunctioning in any way. The model couldrun out of control.

VISUAL INSPECTION

Form the habit of visually inspecting the mechanical integrity ofthe Street Sport before each run.

1) Check the wheels and steering for binding.

2) Check the operation of the shock absorbers.

3) Check the wiring for any frayed wires or loose connections.

4) Check the mounting of the receiver, servos, and speed control.

5) Check the tightness of the wheel nuts with a wrench.

6 Check the operation of the radio system, especially the conditionof the batteries.

7) Check for any loose screws in the chassis structure or suspension.

8) The steering servo saver will wear out over time. If the steeringbecomes loose, the servo saver should be replaced.

DRIVING PRECAUTIONS

• Allow the motor and battery to cool between runs • The radio system is not waterproof. Avoid driving through pud-

dles or mud. If water gets into the electronics it could damagethem.

• Do not continue to operate Street Sport with low batteries oryou could lose control of it. After the battery power drops belowa certain point, the model will continue with the last command ithad from the transmitter. Indications of low battery powerinclude slow operation and sluggish servos (slow to return toneutral). Stop immediately at the first sign of weak batteries. When the batteries in the transmitter become weak, the redpower light will begin to flash. Stop immediately and install newbatteries, or you could lose control of your model.

• Do not drive the Street Sport at night, on public streets, or inlarge crowds of people.

• If the Street Sport becomes stuck against an object, do not con-tinue to run the motor. Remove the obstruction before continu-ing to drive.

• Do not attempt to push objects or tow objects with the StreetSport.

• Because the Street Sport is controlled by radio, it is subject toradio interference from many sources beyond your control.Since radio interference can cause momentary losses of con-trol, allow a safety margin of space in all directions around theStreet Sport in order to prevent collisions.

• Use good, common sense whenever you are driving your StreetSport. Intentionally driving in an abusive and rough manner willonly result in poor performance and broken parts. Take care ofyour car, so that you can enjoy it for a long time to come.

ADJUSTMENTS

• CAMBER

The camber angle of both the front and rear wheels cannot beadjusted using the stock camber rods. The wheels are set to 0degrees of camber (wheel is perpendicular to the ground). Byinstalling optional turnbuckles (see your parts list), the camberangles can be adjusted. These adjustments should be set withthe car positioned at its normal ride height. Use a square or right-angle triangle to set the camber accurately.

• TOE IN

Geometry and alignment specs play an important roll in yourcar’s handling. Take the time to set them correctly. Set the steer-ing trim on your transmitter to neutral. Now, adjust your servoand tie rods so that both wheels are pointing straight ahead andare parallel to each other (0 degrees toe in). This will ensure the

same amount of steering in both directions. For increased stability add 1-2 degrees of toe in to each frontwheel. Use the turnbuckles to adjust the alignment. (Toe-in andToe-out photos shown below are exaggerated. Do not adjust visu-ally to illustrations).

• SHOCKS

The four shocks on Street Sport greatly influence its handling.Whenever you rebuild your shocks, or make any changes to thepistons, springs or oil, always do it carefully and in pairs (front orrear). Piston head selection depends on the range of oil viscosi-ties that you have available. For example, using a two-hole pistonwith a lightweight oil will, at one point, give you the same damp-ening as a three-hole piston with heavier oil. We recommendusing the two-hole pistons with a range of oil viscosities from10W to 50W (available from your hobby shop). The thinner vis-cosity oils (30W or less) flow more smoothly and are more con-sistent, while thicker oils provide more dampening. Use only100% pure silicone shock oil to prolong seal life.

The ride height for Street Sport can be adjusted by adding orremoving the clip-on spring pre-load spacers. Adjust the rideheight so that the suspension arms are slightly above being par-allel to the ground. Observe how Street Sport handles in turns.Proper set-up will add stability and help prevent spin outs.Experiment with different settings to find out what works on yourtrack and conditions.

• GEAR RATIOS

Street Sport will allow you to adjust the gearing over a broadrange. Use the following formula to calculate the overall ratio:

# SPUR GEAR TEETH = FINAL DRIVE RATIO# PINION GEAR TEETH

Street Sport is equipped with a 100-tooth spur gear and an 18-tooth pinion gear. This combination will provide good overallacceleration and top speed. If you want more acceleration andless top speed, use a smaller pinion gear (fewer teeth). For moretop speed, use a larger pinion gear

• BALL DIFFERENTIAL

The ball differential can be adjusted by removing the rubber capfrom the top of the gearbox and inserting the 1.5mm allen wrench(provided) through the hole. Push down on the wrench and rotate

the left wheel until the wrench locks into the hole in the differentialhousing. Continue to push on the wrench and rotate the wheeluntil the wrench is fully inserted into the transmission (see figureA-3). This locks the diff. Now, turn the right rear wheel clockwise

to tighten the diff, or counterclockwise to loosen it (see figure A-4).The preliminary setting for the ball diff is to tighten it until itstops and then back it off 1/4 of a turn. The range of adjust-ment from that point is plus or minus 1/8 of a turn. Adjust the Balldiff for the best cornering performance on your track conditions.Do not run the ball differential so loose that you can see and hearit slipping while the Street Sport is accelerating. This could dam-age your differential.

• CENTERING THE SERVOS

With the radio components out of the model, connect thesteering servo to “channel 1” on the receiver. Connect speedcontrol to “channel 2.”

Place fresh “AA” batteries in the transmitter and turn the powerswitch on. Turn the throttle and steering trim adjustments on thetransmitter to the center “0” position. Plug a freshly-charged batterypack into the speed control. The servos will jump to their centerposition. Now, unplug the battery pack and turn off the transmit-ter. Be careful not to move the servo shafts when installing theservos into your model.

MAINTENANCE

• CHASSIS: Keep the chassis clean of accumulated dirt andgrime. Periodically inspect the chassis for damage

• STEERING: Over time, you may notice increased looseness inthe steering system. There are several components which willwear out from use: the servo saver (Traxxas part#4244), andthe tie rod ends (Traxxas part #2742). Replace these compo-nents as needed to restore factory tolerances.

• MOTOR: Every 10-15 runs, remove, clean, and lubricate themotor. Use a product such as electric motor cleaning spray toflush dirt out of the motor. After cleaning, lubricate the bushingsat each end of the motor with a drop of lightweight electricmotor oil.

• SHOCKS: Keep the oil level in the shocks full. Use only 100%pure silicon shock oil to prolong the life of the seals. If you areexperiencing leakage around the top of the shock, inspect thebladder in the top cap for signs of damage or distortion fromovertightening. If the bottom of the shock is leaking, then it istime for a rebuild. The Traxxas rebuild kit for two shocks ispart#2362.

• SUSPENSION: Periodically inspect the car for signs of damagesuch as bent or dirty suspension pins, bent turnbuckles, loosescrews, and any signs of stress or bending. Replace compo-nents as needed.

• DRIVELINE: Inspect the driveline for signs of wear such asworn drive yokes, dirty axle half shafts, and any unusual noiseor binding. If a U-joint pops apart then it is time to replace thepart. Remove the gear cover and Inspect the spur gear forwear and check the tightness of grub screw in the pinion gear.Tighten, clean, or replace components as needed.

STORAGE

When you are through running the Street Sport for the day, blowit off with compressed air or use a product such as Traxxas NitroWash to remove dirt and grime from the car. When using NitroWash, unplug and remove the batteries. Be careful not to spray itdirectly on the electronic components or into the motor. Allow theStreet Sport to dry completely before reconnecting the batteries.Nitro Wash is flammable and should not be used where aspark may occur (such as in the motor or battery connec-tors).

Always disconnect and remove the batteries from the StreetSport whenever the Street Sport is stored. If the Street Sport willbe stored for a long time, then remove the batteries from thetransmitter as well.

DECALS

Use a hobby knife or body scissors to cut out the decals with thebacking. Test the position of the decals before applying them tothe body. Once the decals have been applied, they cannot beremoved without damaging them. You can spray the body withwindow cleaner before applying the decals. This will allow you tore-position them. Once positioned, squeegee the cleaner fromunder the decal. The decal will adhere when it dries. If you haveair bubbles in the decals, puncture the center of each bubble witha sharp pin and push the air out. If you have creases along theouter edges of a decal (especially when applied to curved surfaces),use a hobby knife to cut along the top of the crease and overlapthe edges.
