The truck is a real oddity here. New Yorkers who are usually blase a-bout everything, surround the truck where ever it stops and just stare. I'msure we will not attract this much attention in Africa. I sure appreciate thatbig bumper on the front of the truck. It puts us in good stead for the tanktype of driving here.. .The children were thrilled with Washington D.C, Tosee our nat ions early history has, I am sure, g iven them a new appreciat ion ofthe land they are leaving.. .We have not had much time to go sightseeing inNew York. It has taken so much time to get the (truck) wheel and shippingan d cu sto m mat te r s c ar ed f orT om wr t s o n N o v e m b e r 2 8 :It is now 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving evening. Because this is an Englishboat, there has been no recognition of Thanksgiving but we are very thankfulin our hearts for all God has done for us. The trip across the Atlantic has hadboth its good and bad moments. The first few days were quite nice and thencame the gale. Fran and Pam took on the usual green look. While I did notbecome ill, I found it nearly impossible to sleep with the bunk rotating in anelliptical 360 degrees. Today the sun is out and the sea moderate. We areenjoying ourselves again. We will be at Le Havre in the early hours tomorrow.Breakfast will be a t 6:00 a m - then customs.T om wr t s o n D e c e m b e r 1 :

This morning we were able to find a small Church o f Christ work of thenon-ins tr ument g roup . They had three American preachers or missionariespresent and their families and a to ta l a t tendance of 35, ourselves and a visi ting couple from Baltimore included. The service was in French, but the fellowship of kindred faith was wonderful.. .After the service the preacher wholived in the rooms over the meeting room invited us to stay to dinner withthem. Our first American meal since we left the States and it was ver^ good... .It is now 9:00 o'clock Sunday evening here in Paris. This is a city that isdifficult to describe. Five million people. It is nearly impossible to des-^cribe the driving. However, it resembles the Indianapolis Speedway with allthe vehicles manned by mental patients. They almost all drive the small cars, but they have no lanes either marked or understood. The real sport seems tobe how close you can come to your opponent without hitting him. o play the

game you must use your hom f requently and flash your headlights often. Atnight it is against the law to drive with your headlights on so all the carsdrive with only their parking lights unless you see a pedestrian or come to ablind intersection then it is legal to flash your headlights on and off. A kindof signal for a fair collision.. .Things are expensive here. Paris is a very oldc ity and our hotelwas one of the first ones built I think.. . Our experience herehas been very good preparation for the mission field. It is frustrating to saythe least to not be able to communicate.. .Every day I become more convincedthat we must do more than we are presently doing in the U.S.A. to send moreevangelists into all the world . Everyone, it seems should have an opportunity to hear the gospe l a t l eas t onceTom wr t s on D e c em b e r 2 :

Today we are in Belgium visiting with the Don Casteliens. Don is a nativeof Belgium that was converted as a result of a contact with an American soldierduring World War II. The correspondence that followed after the war led Donto an understanding of the New Testament position. He went to Johnson BibleCollege in Tennessee studied for the ministry and came back to Belgium towork in a town called Genk pronounced Hank). Without question, he is doingthe best work of any we have seen in Europe. They have a little church houseand about 50 people meeting regularly. Frances and I were overcome by theirextreme poverty and yet th eir gracious hospitality. They i ns is ted th at we eatwith them - a piece of bread and a cup of tea. I told Fran that the people inAmerica would never believe how so many of these people live. Oh but howth_Spirit of _ od is working here. They would have given us all that they hadbecause Jesus would havedone the same. This has been a humbling experiencefor our entire family.. .By the way, tell your children not to complain aboutthe amount of homework they have. Here in Belgium, the young people whoare in their 11th year of school are taking 7) seven languages Latin, Greek,German, English, Flemish, Netherlands and French, plus trig, history, literature etc. They go to class in the morning and come home and study all afternoon and evening. Pam and Mike have suddenly stopped complaining, lestwe send them to school here . .Close to here, Fran cut her hand badly whilecutting a chocolate bar. It took 5 stitches to close it . We found an AmericanArmy base nearby who cared for her hand. I have taken the stitches out buther hand is still very sore. .It has been very cold here but we expected it inthe wintertime. Fran has not been warm since we left Oregon. She will appreciate Africa.. .Pray for us especially at Christmas time. It will be so different for the children. They have been wonderful. Have seldom eaten with regularity most of the time in Europe we had bread and tea for breakfast and hardbread and bologne for mid afternoon lunch and for supper. Then perhaps anorange. They have never complained. We have slept often in small roomswith only three single beds. Again they just do not complain. God has beengood to give us such wonderful children. They do miss their dog.. .We renteda Uttle Renault in Paris, 98 for 19 days plus gas and no additional mileagecharges. This was a good deal for us because we were able to travel 1 800miles through France Switzerland Germany, Belgium, Holland and back toFrance. Of course, we lived on the European standards, which is a good bitlower than our standards in America. Sure got tired of the long, hard loavesof bread and sausage. ut one can always eat and seldom get to see thingsl i ke t h i s

It hasbeen a good t r ip giving us discomfort a t t imes but always e du ca tio na l a ndsometimes inspirational. The experience to this point has made a great cont r ibut ion to my ministry and I am thankfu l to God for i t . They have certainly given us some new Insights to some of theproElenis we will be facing. A Federal Rhodesian police officer who has livedthere for 14 years and knows the area into which we are going told us thingsthat amazed u s . He also has given us many warn ings a bout what to and notto do. In fact both he and his wife s eem worried about us going out in to thebush by ourselves. They have been valuable companions on the trip.F r a n w r i t e s o n J a n u a r y 3 1 9 6 4 :

The trees are hardwood, average some 6 inches in diameter and are from 8 to 20 feet high. This means that I must cut th e airstripout by hand, a mile long and 100 yards wide. What I wouldn t give for a bulldozer. . . I t is difficult to explain the remoteness o f this ar ea. After we leftthe main road we drove for 40 miles through a large European ran ch, wh ere noone lived, neither European or African. The next 30 miles was through a nativer e s e r v e a n d w e frequently sa w African Kralls. etmanent iision Site QtantedAfter an inexplainable delay of eight months, the permanent mission s i te

promised to the Ckjurtneys in the Nuanets i area in Southern Rhodes ia has a tlas t been granted . granted. God d oes o pen doors in His

    t ime and in His way.The new s i t e however , i s approx

    imately thir ty-f ive miles ea s t of the i rp re sen t l oc a ti on o r two and one -ha l fhours by four whee l dr ive t ruck . Thepermanent location i s a t the junctureo f th e N uan e ts i a n d Din e Rive r s a n dcomprises 100 acres for th e miss iondevelopment, plus an addit ional grantof land for an a ir st ri p of 800 by 100yards for the Courtney's Cessna 180a i rc ra f t . Mo s t o f th e mis s i on s i t eand airstrip is heavily wooded withhardwood t rees averaging thirty feetin height , with some very large excep t ions .

Near th e new locat ion are twola rg e poo ls of water in the Nuanets iRiver that s t i l l have an adequatesupply of water, even though thearea is suffering from the wors t-drouth in thir ty-f ive years . A geo--phys ic i s t has a lso te s ted th e areaand given an 85 chance for waterfrom a dr i l l ed we l l . I t i s be l i evedt ha t eventual ly both w ate r sou rceswill be used a s the mission develops .

Topographically the mission s i teis terraced on three levels . The topo r h ig he st level i s ideally sui ted ingrade, appro ach and h ead in g for theairs tr ip. With the preva il ing windblowing from 140 d eg re es h ere , thenew s tr ip w ill b e h ead ed stra ig ht into the wind. The approaches arealso clear which wil l permit heavierair traff ic to use the str ip as theo c c a s i o n a r i s e s . The s e c ond l e v e lis rockier ground a nd w ill be nicelysu i t ed fo r both sch oo ls and c l in i c .The lowest level adjacent to ther ive r s e ems to have th e b e s t s o i land la rg est tre es and w ill be be s tsu i t ed fo r r e s iden t i a l s i t e s . The Courtneys have expressed theirdeepes t thanks to the many who havebeen praying dai ly for th e s i te to b e

    a mis s i on s t a t i on in a r emo t e a r e a o fthe African bush. All o f the suppliesmus t b e hauled in from th e nea r e s tsupply source , nearly 200 miles a -way. Additionally, one tr ies to keepin mind the fu tu re d ev elo pmen t ofthe miss ion in the early installationo f wa te r a nd o th er u t i l i t i e s .

The installation of a wate r systemi s of course always. foremost in sucha development. A diesel engine andpump have b ee n in s ta ll ed near th elargest pool of water in the nearbyNuanetsi River. Inch and a quarter

A twenty foot steel watert owe r h as been erec ted a t th e home-si te and a 1,000 gall on tank p la cedon top to provide a pressure watersystem. As soon as possible a largerreservoirwill be erected on the upperlevel of the mission s i te to providemore adequate storage. Inasmuch asa l l wate r from th e r iver mus t b e f i lte re d a nd tre at ed with chlo ri ne , c ons id e rabl e s to rage is an advantage.

Also nearlng comple t ion is a smal l 8 by 12') concrete block buildingthat will house the generator. Theelectricity i s needed to operate thewelder and other power t oo l s .

Soon, i f funds are available, wewill build a s toreroom, 20' by 40' ,t ha t wi l l con t ian two sma l l rooms fo rthe children to s leep in . We re Always grateful Air Strip Progress SlowWe are alw ays grateful for the

When Iwas struggling to place the 1,000gallon ta nk on top of th e towe r, I wasgrateful for all the block and tacklethat had been given to us Againand again we have been grateful fo rthe f i rearms. In both the repai r ofthe engines and the painting chores, the a ir compressor finds regular useEvery cl inic day we think of thosewho cont r ibuted th e s te r i l ize r denta l fo rc ep s, s ur gi ca l tools and medi c ines This i s by no means an a ttempt to give a complete catalog ofa l l of the gif ts bu t to indicate inpart that the thoughtfulness of somany of you in America has gone along way to make our task easierhe re We are grateful indeed
