Taking action against climate changeClimate change threatens the exist-

ence of every living thing on this planet. No one can ignore the fact that weather-systems are changing.

The increasing number of bushfires, rising rainfall and more viciouscyclones, threaten millions of lives.

The people who deny climate changedeny science.

They leave the future down to chance, like a ball on a roulette wheel, ready tospin out of control at any moment.

This isn’t someone else’s problem tobe left till another day.

This is our problem. It’s our fight. It’sour planet.

If we allow climate change deniers toproject their views onto impressionableminds, we are putting our future at risk.

Our ecosystem is fragile and for years wehave abused it by plundering itsresources and polluting our airways.

Trees and oceans are carbon buffers. The pollutants we release into our

atmosphere are absorbed by them. Everyforest we chop down releases gallons ofcarbon back into the air, which isabsorbed by our waterways and increas-ing their acidity, as they try to dilute thetoxins we are poisoning our environ-ment with.

From a local perspective, if theMangaohoi Stream rises by just a fewmetres, parks, tennis courts and houseswill be flooded.

If the Waikato River bursts its banks, hundreds of people will be affected. Wecan’t continue to ignore this threat.

When we signed the Paris ClimateAgreement it was seen as a major steptowards a greener future.

A future where we nurture our en-vironment back to health, in the hope ofaverting disaster. But some worldleaders still deny the problem. They putthe future of our children and grand-children at risk by refusing to act.

The only way we can change this is tomobilise, energise and take action our-selves.

If we stand together we can achieveanything.

Together we can rally against thosewho ignore the threat. Together we canbuild the future we want. We arestronger together.

Enrolment packs on their wayMore than 3 million packs will be sent

out this week as the Electoral Com-mission launches its campaign to enrolvoters for the 2017 general election.

The personalised enrolment updatepacks are being sent to all enrolledvoters and will arrive in letterboxes overthe next few days.

The pack includes a form setting outthe individual’s current enrolmentdetails with space to record any changes.

“Look out for the envelope withOrange Guy on the front,” says chiefelectoral officer Alicia Wright.

“Open it and check the details — ifthey’re correct, it means you don’t needto do anything more and you’re all set tovote in this year’s election.

“If you need to update any of yourdetails, especially if you’ve changedyour name or address, fill out the form, sign it, and send it back in the returnenvelope,” says Ms Wright.

“Only voters who are correctly en-rolled will be able to vote in September,so it’s important to get your enrolmentsorted out now,” says Ms Wright.

If voters don’t receive a letter by

Friday, it means they are not enrolled orneed to update their details.

If an enrolment pack arrives thisweek for someone who doesn’t live at theaddress, it should be marked return tosender and put back in the post so thelocal Registrar of Electors knows thevoter is no longer at that address.

■ To enrol visit www.elections.org.nz orpick up an enrolment form at a PostShop. You can also request a form by calling 080036 76 56 or by texting your name andaddress to 3676.

Piano off to new home

TC270617BR01NEW home for the 2.3m grand piano will be at the St John’s Anglican Church.

PIANISTS Katherine Austin (left) and Rafaella Garlick-Grice perform a two-piano concert on Sunday, July 9 at The Lodge at Highfield Retirement Village.

CONCERT pianist Michael Houston (left) was first toplay Te Awamutu’s new piano. Liam Ryan of TheNarcs ‘tickled the ivories’ at The Woolshed with jazzcombo Torch Songs.

A 2.3m grand piano isbeing relocated from itslong-term home at TheWoolshed Theatre to theSt John’s AnglicanChurch.

The community-owned piano was pur-chased in the 1980s especi-ally for Michael Houstonto play.

The New Zealand con-cert pianist insisted hecould only visit centresthat had a decent piano tooffer — which initiallyruled out Te Awamutu.

But the Te AwamutuMusic Federation beganfundraising for a pianoand individuals, groups, businesses, Council, Lot-tery and Arts Councilcame to the party withdonations.

The federationapproached Mr Houstonasking for advice regard-ing a suitable piano and hechose one worth $15,000,owned by the AucklandPiano Teachers’ Associa-tion. A special room wasbuilt at the Woolshed for$15,000 to store the piano.

Mr Houston played thefirst concert at a reducedfee.

Since then he’sreturned several timesalong with other promin-ent pianists such as TessaBirnie, Terence Dennis,Imogen Cooper, DavidGuerin, Maurice Till andKatherine Austin.

By 1993 the Music Fed-eration was looking atinstalling a lift to move thepiano onto the stage.

“In the past we haveenlisted the services offive able-bodied volun-teers to hoist the pianoonto the stage, but theyare increasingly hard tofind,” the group’s minutessay.

The lift nevereventuated and one nightthe piano fell through thestage. In recent years ithas become difficult tofind a time when the pianocan be used.

So St John’s AnglicanChurch has agreed tohouse the piano in itschurch building so con-certs, competitions, com-munity musical eventscan be held there.

The piano will bemoved on Friday, July 7. Itwill go via The Lodge atHighfield Retirement Vil-lage for a two-piano con-cert on Sunday, July 9 at2.30pm.

The Highfield pianoand the Music Federationpiano are of equal tone —they are both 2.3m

Yamaha pianos.Organisers are

expecting a wonderfulsound. Pianists Katherine

Austin and RafaellaGarlick-Grice will per-form on the two pianos.Katherine Austin is wellknown to musical audi-ences in Te Awamutu andRafaella Garlick-Grice hasplayed in Te Awamutu inthe past when she was astudent — now she is acandidate for a Perform-ance Doctorate at WaikatoUniversity.

They will play worksfor two pianos composedby Frederic Chopin,Robert Schumann, SergeiRachmaninoff and BusoniFerruccio Busoni

The piano will go StJohn’s Anglican Churchon Wednesday, July 12.

■ Entry is $15 and under-16sare free. Tickets, limited to130, at the door.

Commemorating a battle

TC220617SPMESSINESPATRIOT members lay a wreathe to commemorate 100 years since the Battle of theMessines.

Plaque marks a century since Battle of MessinesIt has been 100 years

since the Battle of theMessines, and a service washeld on June 11 at thePukeatua War MemorialService to commemoratethe battle.

RSA members and localresidents filled the churchand New Zealand DefenceForce Patriots MotorcycleClub donated a plaque.

The plaque wasconsecrated by RSA PadreReverend Murray Olson.

Patriot Peter Leslieorganised and coordinatedthe event with Te AwamutuRSA and the Pukeatua com-munity.

He gave a descriptiveaccount of World War I andthe involvement of New Zea-land troops up to, andincluding, the Battle ofMessines.

Margaret Main, ofPukeatua, spoke aboutLance Corporal Brill whowas killed at Messines andis listed on the World War IHonours Board inside thechurch.

David Haberfield playedthe bugle and WarrantOfficer Aaron Morrisonrecited the Ode in Te ReoMaori.

The Patriots then rodepast the church, plinth andlocals to the RSA for lunch.

A collection was held onthe day and all funds raisedwill go towards a memorialwindow at the church.

The Battle of Messines

during World War I was aprelude to the much largerThird Battle of Ypres −better known asPasschendaele − whichbegan on July 31 1917.

In contrast to the event-ual disaster at

Passchendaele, the care-fully prepared attack onMessines was a striking suc-cess.

At 3.10am on June 7, 1917,huge mines that had beenplaced under the Germanlines by hard-working

tunnellers exploded. Almostimmediately, New Zealandtroops of the 2nd and 3rd(Rifle) Brigades left theirtrenches and advancedtowards the ridge in front ofthem, on which lay theruins of Messines village.

Council invests in repairs

AN isolated home in Patetonga following flooding bythe Piako River in April.

More than $1 millionfrom the Waikato RegionalCouncil disaster reservefund is being used to helpfix rainfall and flood-relateddamage caused by the threemajor weather systems thathit the region on the trotearlier this year.

A report to the inte-grated catchment manage-ment committee meetingalso warned that the satura-tion of catchments causedby those events has left theregion even more vulner-able over winter.

Heavy rain bandstermed “Tasman Tempest”hit the region in Marchfollowed by the impacts ofex-tropical cyclones Debbieand Cooke in April. Rainfallwas up to 450 per cent of thenormal March average andup to 317 per cent of Aprilaverages.

The prolonged period ofheavy rain resulted in“highly saturated soils andchallenging flood manage-ment conditions”, withfarmers on the HaurakiPlains particularly impac-ted as rivers rose to veryhigh levels. The WaihouRiver at Te Aroha recordedits highest April levels everand average levels for theWaikato River at Hamiltonand Rangiriri exceededprevious maximums for themonth.

While NIWA ispredicting normal or belownormal winter rainfalllevels, the current elevatedriver levels and saturatedcatchments mean affectedareas are at risk from “fur-ther high flows and floodingissues even given relatively

moderate rainfall events”,the report said.

The exceptional natureof the March and Aprilevents meant it was appro-priate to use the disasterreserve to fund the council’sresponse, involving a totalof $1.16 million in spending.

In the Waihou-Piakozone in eastern Waikato atotal clean up and repair billof just under half a milliondollars is expected. Some$265,000 is due to be spent inthe Waihou catchment onclean-up work and fixingflood control assets, whilein the Piako catchmentaround $230,000 will bespent.

More than $460,000 is tobe spent in the Lower Wai-kato River zone and justover $200,000 in the Coro-mandel zone.

The committee’s jointchair north Stu Husbandsaid the significant costsand potential future riskshighlighted the need fortight management of floodcontrol assets and floodresponse systems.

“Flood protection is ahugely significant part ofthe council’s work. We arecurrently reviewing all theimpacts of the high rainfall, and how flood protectionassets worked, so we arebetter placed to managerisks.

“What I am proud of,however, is the hugeamount of effort that wentin from council staff —working with partneragencies including farmingorganisations — to helpmanage and recover fromthe impact of these floods.

“We are committed tocontinuing to work closelywith our partners as wereview our flood manage-ment and response systemsso we are best placed tomanage and respond tofuture risks. In the mean-time, our regional hazardsteam will be keeping a closeeye on weather forecasts, aswell as river and soil moist-ure levels, and providingprompt advice on anypotential hazards as winterprogresses.”

Isdale scores first training win

TC270617SP10TRAINER Clinton Isdale pictured with Almarie, who gavehim his first training success at Ruakaka.

Te Awamutu trainer ClintonIsdale scored his first training winat Ruakaka with Almarie, a four-year-old mare he purchased as abirthday present for his fianceeGemma Hewetson.

Being such a strong support forIsdale, it was fitting that Hewetson— a former Waikato eventingrepresentative — was on course atRuakaka on June 17 to witness thestable’s breakthrough win.

“It would have been good forboth of us to be there, but someonehas to stay home to work the horsesand I had taken the horse up therelast time,” he said.

“It was good for her to go. I wasproud of her more than anything. Iwas so happy for her to be there andexperience that. I got more out ofGemma being emotionally happythan what I did for myself.”

He said the win was made a lotsweeter as he bought the Alamosamare for Hewetson offbloodstockauctions.com.

“She was a birthday present forGemma,” he said.

“Gemma’s very hands-on withher as well. She does eventing and abit of jumping with her and we takeher up Mrs Browne’s hill. I’m sortof the name on the paper, Gemma isas much part of it as me.”

Isdale said the win was thehighlight of his racing career todate.

“It was unbelievable. It was better thanriding my first winner as a jockey. It’s a loteasier being a jockey. Being a trainer thereis nowhere to hide, you are up everymorning and you’re just under a lot morescrutiny and pressure.”

The Puahue couple also purchased sev-eral yearlings last year to break-in and bringthrough the system.

“We went out and put our bums on theline last year and we’ve got six yearlingsourselves.

They’re two-year-olds now,” he said.“Two of them have raced and we’ve just

had one that has been sold to Mick Kent inMelbourne.” Isdale’s introduction to train-ing and the racing industry has been farfrom smooth sailing.

The former Australian jockey has hadtwo major incidents in his life. One led himinto a career as a jockey, while the othernearly took his life before his training careerhad even begun.

Raised in Camden, just outside of Sydney,Isdale was a star rugby league player who

was good enough to have the NRLknocking on his door.

“I played rugby league as a childand played Australian schoolboys,” he said.

“I was contracted to the SydneyRoosters, but I was just a little bittoo small.”

On rugby league legend ArthurBeetson’s suggestion, Isdale joinedthe Australian army with the ideaof returning to rugby league afterhe had grown.

“Unfortunately, when I was inthe army I broke my pelvis,” hesaid. “I was medically discharged.”

This twist in fate led to a chanceencounter with jockey DannyBeasley, whose mother was Isdale’snurse in hospital.

He suggested, due to his size,Isdale try his hand at becoming ajockey.

“I’d never ridden a horse. I said Iwas a little bit too heavy, but Iwatched a couple of races andthought I’d give it a go.

Isdale went on to win 44 races asan apprentice jockey in Australiabefore moving on to work asforeman for Darley under PeterSnowden.

“Working for Peter put me ingood stead,” he said. “I’ve used lotsof things I’ve learned throughPeter, like how to read a horse andsimple things like just being patient

with a horse.”Isdale then added some international

flavour to his CV by spending time inSingapore as Bruce Marsh’s assistanttrainer before returning to Sydney to workfor Chris Waller.

He then spent time at Godolphin beforemoving to Te Awamutu last year with hispartner, daughter of local owner/trainerShirley Hewetson, to set up his own trainingoperation at Puahue.

Training suits couple

TC270617CT01PUAHUE’S Emma Hewetson brushes down one of herand Clinton Isdale’s six horses currently in work, anunnamed two-year-old burgundy filly.

■ From page 10

“Gemma got a littlehomesick. I said if you’remissing home we’ll go, but Idon’t just want to ride trackwork. Maybe we’ll look intotraining horses.”

They moved across theTasman last year, but weremet with a life-threateningincident just two days intotheir new venture atPuahue.

Isdale was impaled by apiece of flying wood after ayearling he was breaking inran through a fence.

“It went through mycolon, bowel and small intes-tine and just missed myheart,” he said.

“I was rushed to WaikatoHospital for emergency sur-gery and had a few oper-ations after that while I wasin hospital. I was in there forthree months.”

It has been a slowstruggle for the Te Awa-mutu conditioner, whocredits Hewetson with hisrecovery.

“I went from a strongperson to not being able towalk,” he said.

“I had to learn how towalk again properly. Youdon’t realise how much youneed your stomach. Icouldn’t shower, she had todo everything. She’s myrock.”

To show his thanks to theward that saved his life lastyear, Isdale has made Ward12 at Waikato hospital anunofficial owner of one ofthose racehorses, a BuffaloMan filly called Barbello.

“After I had my injury

here I donate 10 per cent ofher prizemoney to the wardI was in at Waikato. That’sjust to show my appreci-ation for them looking afterme.”

Isdale said he is reallyenjoying living in New Zea-land, with the couple look-ing to stay in the country forthe long-haul and grow theirbusiness.

“Being here now I don’tthink I’d ever move back toAustralia. New Zealand is

such a lovely country withlovely people. Where we livein Te Awamutu it is a semi-rural area where everybodyis only out to help eachother.”

As for Gemma, she isloving being back ‘home’ inTe Awamutu.

“We’ve got six horses inwork and it’s just the two ofus doing everything, so wetake turns at the races — thewin means a lot to both ofus.”

TWO-TIMES national crosscountry champion Jan Maree Pool high flying on her KTM 300.

BY COLIN THORSEN

Volunteer St JohnAmbulance officer JanMaree Pool is withoutpeer in New Zealandwomen’s cross countryracing.

The Te Awamutu25-year-old totally domin-ated the New Zealandseries on her KTM350-sponsored bike tobecome national cham-pion for the second yearrunning, winning roundone at Dannevirke, placing second round twoat Mosgiel and winningboth rounds three andfour at Marlborough andCambridge.

Pool had further suc-cess taking out the NewZealand Cross CountryTeam’s Trophy with BradGroombridge (NZ1) andAndrew Gaddes (NZ2Vet), becoming the firstw o m a n t o h a v e h e rnamed engraved on thetrophy.

H e r C V m a k e simpressive reading —l i s t e d a m o n g c a r e e rhighlights are three con-secutive Bel Ray titles,Grand National CrossC o u n t r y t i t l e s a n dplacings, and two con-secutive Taupo FourHour Ironwoman titles.

P o o l i s s t o k e d t ofinally see the inclusionof the women’s divisionas a national champion-ship class.

“It brings the womenonto the same playing

field as the men,” shesays. “We put just asmuch effort in travellingto events and training.

“We race the sametrack for the same lengthof time, so it’s nice thatt h e f o r m e r n o n -championship class isn o w r e c o g n i s e d a n drewarded.”

Pool says her motiva-tion comes from beingable to get out and com-pete with the boys asoften as she does.

“I feel the women inthe sport have gained agreat amount of respectf r o m o u r m a l ecounterparts because it’sa tough sport and can beboth physically and men-tally exhausting.

“The hardest part isthe days you know will betough before you evenstart, it becomes a bit ofmind over matter then.

“It’s always a chal-lenge lining up on thestart line on a cold, wet, miserable day knowingthat you’ll be strugglingin the ‘mud and crap’ forthree or four hours . . .and there’s always thepost race clean up.

“I am incredibly lucky, however, to have dad whodoes the vast majority ofmy bike cleaning andmaintenance.”

“To be fair I do bugger-all training,” says thetwo-times national cham-pion.

“I enjoy just gettingout on the bike and

having a good time.“ I t ’ s m o r e a b o u t

having a good time andcatching up with theother people involved, who are all seen as a bigfamily. It’s a friendlysport, we look after eachother and we have fun.”

Pool says the other

girls competing in thesport are a great inspira-tion.

“Local riders l ikeRachael Archer have somuch to offer the sport,it’s exciting to be able tow a t c h o t h e r g i r l ssucceeding.”

After most accidents

comes the thought thatmaybe it’s time to hangup the boots.

At round two of theseries in Mosgiel, Poolwas knocked out fora p p r o x i m a t e l y 1 0minutes, resulting in ahelicopter ride.

Fortunately, she was

able to get back on herbike for round three am o n t h l a t e r a f t e rundergoing a compulsorythree week stand downfor concussion.

Bike riding has alwaysbeen a family sport in thePool household.

Her dad Dave andbrother Wayne have bothraced, mum Rae was aMNZ steward and hasbeen involved in theorganising and runningof events.

Family are withoutdoubt her biggest sup-porters. Dave alwaystravels to events withher, while Rae eithertravels or stays at hometo look after her daugh-ter’s son Jaxon, 4.

Patterson O’ConnorMotorcycles, DR Trim,Power Weed Control,Power Adventures allhelp her out and localbusinesses like WilksPenny Motorcycles andCarters Tyres are verygood lending a hand whenshe needs them.

As for future goals,Pool says she just wantsto keep doing what she isdoing, “although shortly Ithink I’ll be stepping backa bit to start concentrat-ing on getting Jaxoninvolved at club level”.

There is every chance, however, that the lure ofhaving a crack at a ‘three-peat’ will be too great toturn down when nextyear’s national seriescomes around.

What doyou think?

Two time Grammy nomineeTommy Emmanuel is set to un-leash his supreme guitar talent onan eagerly awaiting Hamiltonaudience at Claudelands Arena onFriday, September 22 at 8pm andwe have a copy of his latest CDTommy Emmanuel — Live! AtThe Ryman up for grabs as theideal precursor to what will be areal stunner of a show.

Containing a mix of his mostpopular songs, fan favourites andcovers, this 15 track CD hassomething for everyone.

He captivates his audience asone of the most outstanding soloperformers you will ever experi-ence with his unique and inimi-table style. It’s all faithfullycaptured here as he performs to acapacity crowd at the prestigiousHistoric Ryman Auditorium inNashville.

Tommy had this to say aboutthe show — ‘This is genuine “hadto be there”…no fix ups…no frillsrecording. Each of my guitars haspick ups and microphones in-cluded when you buy them, so thesound you hear from thisrecording is exactly as it sounds inthe hall”.

Recorded on February 27 lastyear, the album treats listeners toeverything that is good aboutTommy Emmanuel — somethingold, something new (Eva Waits —

and it’s a ripper!), somethingborrowed, something blue — it’sall here.

Some brilliant medleys includ-ing While My Guitar Gently Weeps/Day Tripper/ Lady Madonna/Classical Gas.

Chet Atkins, Tommy’s mentorand inspiration, awarded Tommywith the Certified Guitar Playeraward — a rare distinction sharedbetween only four other guitaristsin the world. The remaining two,Steve Wariner and John Knowles, join him during the concert.

Emmanuel’s technical pre-cision, his virtuosicimprovisations and his unusuallybroad repertoire, which encom-passes not only country and blue-grass, but pop, jazz, blues, gospel, even classical, flamenco, andaboriginal styles makes for a mostenjoyable music experience.

One superstar guitarist, oneguitar and a great new album toshare. One magical night of musi-cal memories — guaranteed!

CINEMASCENECINEMASCENEWonderWoman

Before she wasWonder Womanshe was Diana, princess of theAmazons, trainedto be an unconquer-able warrior.

Raised on a shel-tered island para-dise when a pilotcrashes on theirshores and tells of amassive conflictraging in the out-side world, Dianaleaves her homeconvinced she canstop the threat.

Fighting along-

side man in a warto end all wars,Diana will discoverher full powers andher true destiny.

A movie beyondwoman equality,

history, war, ethicsand even religion.

This movie hashonour, duty, good, evil, doing what isright and of course, love.

You will neverhave such pro-found aspects inanother fictitioushero movie.

A masterpieceon its kind.

TheZookeeper’sWife

Parents need toknow that TheZookeeper's Wifeis an intense,sometimes-brutaldrama based on thetrue story (whichinspired DianeAckerman's same-named book) of acouple who helpedsave hundreds ofWarsaw Jews dur-ing World War II.

JessicaChastain stars asAntonina Zabinski, who, with her hus-band, Jan (JohanHeldenbergh),

turned their zoointo a differentkind of sanctuaryduring the Nazis'occupation of theircity.

Expect manydisturbing scenesof wartime carnageand destruction, in-

cluding bombings,battles, explosion,and shootings.

People areexecuted, animalsare shot and Jewsare rounded up inthe Warsaw ghettoand later placed ontrains bound for

concentrationcamps.

There are manymoments of tensionand fear, but char-acters also showcompassion andcourage in the faceof tremendousodds.
