    Piper Cameron McKay, from

Cousland, was so moved by the story

he offered to play a lament as the

baby was laid to rest. The 21-year-

old said: My mum bought the paper

and I just saw the story. I thought it

would be something nice to do. Ive

recently started up my own piping

Cousland piper plays lament at funeral for unknown baby

    Village Day Competitions 29 August

Its now or never Lets seize the day

A tragic baby found dead on a path

almost two years ago was laid to rest

    with a piper and a specially-made

burial gown thanks to a big-hearted

    drive from Lothian residents.

    Police launched a major investigation

in July 2013 after a dog walker

    discovered the body near Seafield

    Crematorium, but attempts to

identify the infant and his family

    through public appeals, DNA testing

    and forensic examinations all failed.

    Police Scotland announced the baby

Update on works at the Smiddy A grant from the Heritage Lottery

Fund and a donation from Midlothian

Council have allowed us to forge

    ahead. Real progress has already

been made, thanks to our volunteers

    and excellent professional input by

    local businesses.

The major repairs to the gable wall

and the installation of a damp-

proofing system and caps on the

chimneys mean that the cottage is

drying out well and much needed

storage space has been created in

the attic. The space where the

temporary shed once stood is being

    converted into a stone-slabbed

meeting area and viewing point - a

    huge improvement to the village

    environment.

Have a wander past on the way to the

    petanque!

The Smiddy Trust office has been

redecorated and the rest of the cottage

is now ready for the final push towards

the launch of the Smiddy Cottage as

    Couslands Community Heritage Hub,

on 4 July! If youd like to help us get the

rest of the cottage redecorated, and

arranged for the opening, please contact

    Gordon on 07803 94 06 30 or e-mail us

    on [email protected].

The cottage will accommodate the local

    history group and smiddy archives.

There will be lots to see! New computers

and software will let us catalogue our

    collections to meet industry standards

and the display room and research

area will allow folk to search and add

    to our information base about

    Couslands place in Scotlands story.

Workshops will be held to teach folk

how to use the system, so watch out

for an opportunity to join us in this

    very important village heritage

    project.

    Cousland Smiddy Trust would

    welcome interested individuals to its

meetings in the Smiddy Cottage. See

Dates for your Diary for details. We

are always looking for new members

    and volunteers.

Broadband Update The broadband group continue to

    meet and investigate various options

to obtain a better broadband service

in the village. The most favourable

option at the moment is the one pro-

    vided by STOBONET.

    Stobonet have indicated that they

would charge 150 installation fee and

thereafter there would be a monthly

cost of approx. 25 . This would give a

service with broadband speeds of 10-

20 mbps. To provide this a mast would

require to be erected with several

    additional antenna installed at various

    locations around the village. The

    Broadband group have contacted

    Stobonet for more details.

Watch this space for more details

    soon.

Our neighbours in Carberry are concerned about a recent

application by Hamilton Waste and Recycling to extend the hours and

days of operation of this plant. This follows on from previous

complaints about litter, noise and lorry movements.

There is a consultation with East Lothian Council ref 15/00192/PM |

Smeaton Bing. If you want to object to this application please do so to

East Lothian Council as soon as possible.

    Guest of European Heritage Days

Sheena Irving was delighted to be

invited to be the guest of the Scottish

    co-ordinator for European Heritage

Days at an event in Kilkenny, Eire last

month, organised by the Council of

Europe to launch their new web portal

on European Industrial Heritage. The 3

days of workshops & visits introduced

the portal to attendees from Eire,

    Northern Ireland, Iceland, Finland &

    Scotland.

    It gave representatives of local

    community heritage projects the

opportunity to get involved with the

portal which will connect sites and

projects such as the Smiddy and

    Cousland Heritage Hub with similar

    projects in 30 other countries

    throughout Europe and take

advantage of being a linked location,

    advertised throughout the Continent.

    New website for Couslands History

Villager Tom Morrow has helped us to

develop and launch a brand new

    website which covers Cousland

    Smiddy, Cousland Local History

Project and Cousland Heritage Hub in

    one domain

    www.couslandsmiddy.co.uk

This is linked from the village

website as well as being a site in

its own right. We look forward to

    welcoming villagers & visitors to

    the hub when we re-open

    sometime in July.

Midlothian Walking Festival Cousland Historical Walk

    Each year Midlothian Ranger service

organise a walking festival of 4 days of

    led walks through Midlothians

    beautiful countryside.

Once again volunteers Joe Cardow and

Dougie McKenzie will be leading what

is always one of the most popular

walks, a 5.5 mile circular beginning in

    Cousland village and ending with

    teas in the village hall.

Other walks on offer vary from 4 to

12 miles in length, and for variety

    there is also Nordic walking,

Canicross and an evening bat walk

    at Vogrie Country Park.

The walking festival runs over 4

days from Friday 7th to Monday 10th

August. All walks are FREE but must

be booked in advance on 01875

821716 before 31st July. You can find

    full details at

    www.midlothian.gov.uk/walking-

festival or on leaflets available in

    Midlothian libraries.

IT SURGERY/COURSE I am planning to offer computer/IT

    support (including mobile phones,

tablets, iPads etc), making good use of

the Village Hall high speed broadband

facility. My thought is to hold 'surgeries'

from time to time, depending on

interest. I am trying to work out the best

day and time that suit people. If you are

    interested please email me on

    [email protected] or

    text/call on 07884125126.

Midlothian Local Development Plan Consultation The Proposed Midlothian Local Development Plan (MLDP) and associated

documents were approved by the Council at its meeting on 16 December

2014 and have now been published for the statutory period for

representation/ expressions of opinion, running from 14 May 2015 until

3.30pm on 26 June 2015 and are available to view on the Council's planning

    portal. http://midlothian-consult.objective.co.uk/portal/

For Cousland the good news is that the Airfield site is NOT identified as an

area of search for opencast coal extraction. Perhaps Couslanders might like

to respond to the consultation to congratulate Midlothian Council on their

    sensible decision on this.
