Next Monday, the Gooding County Plan- ning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider a Special Use Permit application for property located just south of the City of Gooding. The proposed use is for a wrecking yard and automobile sales at 1958 Highway 46 (next to the old radio station). The property is currently zoned Transitional-2. The public hearing will be held at the P&Z to Discuss Wrecking Yard Camas Lily Days This Saturday, June 6th, the Annual Cam- as Lily Days celebration will kick off at the Kids Pond one mile east of Fairfield. Along with the help of Fish & Game’s “Take Me Fishing” program, the Camas Chamber of Commerce will host this fun event for kids. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the derby runs from 8 to 11 with prizes, Hot Dogs, and lots of family fun. If fishing isn’t your game, head on over the Camas Senior Center (129 Willow Av- enue W.) for Breakfast where they will be serving Bonnie Sweet’s Famous Sour- dough Pancakes. They will also be having a fundraising yard sale with all kinds of P&Z Meeting Room (145 7th Avenue E.) in Gooding starting at 7 p.m. Individuals may make written or oral tes- timony at the meeting. Written documents submitted at the meeting must be limited to one page. Also, oral testimony will be limited to five minutes. Everyone is welcome to attend regardless of whether they comment or not. A regular P&Z meeting will follow the hearing. treasures. Just across the road from the center is the City Park where you will find arts and crafts ga- lore starting a 10 a.m. At one o’clock the music will begin with Wilson French playing up-beat, family friendly, two-part & three-part har- mony. At 4 p.m. Dirty Johnny will fire up the stage with Rock and Country music. On Sunday morning, June 7th, don’t bother cooking, just come to the park for a Community Breakfast starting at 8 a.m. Arts and craft vendors will open up at 10 o’clock to give a second chance to buy that special something you won’t find anywhere else. At 2 p.m. get ready for a different kind of dancing music with the Shoban Homecom- ing, and don’t be shy about joining in when you are invited to join the celebration. The “Cruisin’ 4 A Cure” Poker Run fundraiser will take place this Saturday with registration at the Gooding County Fairgrounds start- ing at 9 a.m. There will be a meet and greet time from 10 a.m. until noon. All cars and motorcycles will take off at noon on a route from Gooding, to Wendell, to Hagerman, to Bliss, and back to the fair- grounds. OwenClaudeScanlon,87,ofNampa, Idaho,diedMay28,2015athisresidence. ClaudewasbornDec.24,1927 inConcordia,Kansas,thesecondsonofOwenCau-leyandLavinaJacobsScan-lon. He spent much of hisboyhoodonafarminCollyer,Kansasandheattended theTregopublicschoolswherehismotherhadtaughtforanumberofyears.Thefamilyfinally left the Dust Bowl area in 1944, settling in Good-ing,IdahowhereClaudecompletedhighschoolandthenenlistedintheArmy. Followinghismilitaryservice,heattendedIdahoStateCollegeinPocatello,movingbacktoGoodingfollow-inggraduation.HerehemetJoyceCharleneHerrickonablinddateandthetwoweremarriedAugust11,1949.ThenewfamilylivedforatimeinJeromeandKetchumuntil finally settling back in Gooding, where Claude ran hisownpetroleumdeliverycompanyforthenexttwenty-five years. HewasanactiveRotarian inGoodingbeginning in1958,wherehewassecretaryforagoodnumberofyearsandactingpresidentfrom1973-1974.HewasalsoontheGoodingSchoolBoardwhilemostofhischildrenwereinhighschool.ClaudeandJoycemovedtoNampalastyeartobeclosertotheirchildren. Claudeissurvivedbyhiswife(NampaID),threesons,OwenWrightScanlon(HaileyID),RoryRahnScanlon(AmericanForkUT)andJamesClaudeScanlon(BoiseID)andonedaughter,CherylAnneCase(NampaID).Alsosurvivingareasister,RuthCarolineWilker(WinslowAZ),abrother,RogerThomasScanlon(LasVegasNV),eighteengrandchildrenandthirtygreatgrandchildren. Ifyoudidn’tguaranteeyourstackingjob,yousoonfoundthatthefarmerswouldn’thireyou.Thelastthingtheywantedwasthehaystacktofalldownorapartinthemiddleofbadweatherconditions.Feedwastooprecioustobeshortearlyinthewinter.IkeptallthecustomersIcouldhandlebecauseIdidguaranteemystackingjob.Thepatterninwhichthebalesweretiedtogetherwasgreatifyoufollowedafewsimplerules.MydadhadtaughtsomefellowsthepatternandIlearnedfromthemlateron.YoucansayDadtaughtmewithouteversayingawordtome.Infact,whenmydadandIstackedtogether,itwaslikewewereanoiledmachine. IusetostackhayforanoldergentlemannamedOtis.Hehadfortyacresofhayandtwohundredacresofmosquitoes.Onone particular cutting I had another job that wasn’t quite fin-ished.ItoverlappedmygettingtoOtis.Anotherkid,Clifford,thoughtsinceIcouldstackhay,hecouldtoo.HecontractedtostackthehayfromOtis.AboutfourhoursintothejobIjoinedhim,perhapstospeedupthehayhaulingprocess. OtistoldmehewasworriedaboutClifford’sjob.IbelieveCliffordsaidhewouldstackforacentcheaperjusttogetthehoursworthofjumponme(Otiswasprettyonscheduleforwateruse).WhenIarrivedCliffordwasaboutninebaleshighonhisstack,anditlookedprettysad.I’msurethestackwasn’ttiedtogether. OtiswalkedovertoCliffordandaskedhimifheguaranteedhiswork.Hisreplywas,“No.”Otisthenreplied,“Teeguaran-teeshisstack.Infact,ifitwasinthebarnandatornadocameandblewthebarnaway,thestackwouldstillbethere.” WhileOtisandIwerediscussingplanstogettherestofthe hay out of the field, the haystack Clifford was stacking on fellover.Needlesstosay,Cliffordwasrelievedofhisstack-ingjob.Itwasn’tbecauseofhislackoftryingbuthislackofcommitmenttoexcellence. My sister and I went to hauling hay from the field. Otis wanted me to fix Clifford’s stack. I told him I could work on itorbuildminenexttohistoholditup.Iwouldbynomeansputaguaranteeonsomeworkthathadnofoundationforaguarantee.Otisofferedmealittleextratosavehiscrop.Iagreedtothat.Afterall,afewacreslessmosquitoesonthehaulin.Nothinginlifeisguaranteedbutifyoualwaystrytodoyourbest-yourworkwillspeakforitself.
