March 2010
Office of Traffic SafetyMinnesota Department of Public Safety
Motor Vehicle Crashes = Leading Cause of Death (Ages 1-34)
• 93% of deaths are a result of driver behavior
• 34% are due to road factors• 12% are a result of the
driver’s vehicle • Combination of these factors
contribute to crashes.
Basic Behavioral Strategies
• Pairing education with enforcement– Education alone will not change behavior– Enforcement alone will not change behavior for very
long• “Popular” choices are often not effective– Improve driver’s education– Public information campaigns – Handouts and give-aways
• Enforcement Tools• Laws
Programs through Office of Traffic Safety
• Safe and Sober- (aggressive overtime traffic safety enforcement)• HEAT (High Enforcement of Aggressive/Speed Traffic)• TZD Safe Roads (Safe Communities Coalitions)• Night CAP (Concentrated Alcohol Patrol)• DWI Courts and Court Monitoring• Alternative Rides Home• Communications tools
– publicizing enforcement with news releases, media kits, posters• Worksite policies or trainings
– server training– policies on texting/cell phone use/speeding/seatbelts/alcohol
