rom its world-class concert venues to the local artists and the neighborhood bars they play, Chicago

is truly country music’s “second city.” Over the last several years, major touring country acts like Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood have reached record-breaking feats when their tours stopped in Chicago.

Why is country music so successful in Chicago? Most importantly, it’s the fans. Chicago’s country music fan base is extremely dedicated to the artists

and the venues they play. Some would say it’s the outlets that allow fans to connect with their favorite artists. In Chicago, some of these outlets include the critically acclaimed concert venue, Joe’s Bar; the largest country radio station, US99 and one heck of an online country music community led by CountryMusicChicago.com. The sum of these parts equals “sweet-home” Chicago for the country music industry.

Looking at this sum-mer’s country music concert lineup, the success will continue in 2010 for both the artists and the fans. From the lakefront concerts to suburban county fairs, newcomers and diehards fans alike will converge on some of the hottest ticket shows in town. While it’s extremely impossible to come up with the top concert list, later on in this guide we’ll look at some of Chicagoland’s top “hot 15” country music concerts of the summer.

CONCERT LISTINGS In chronological order by date:

In the country music world, the state of Wisconsin is known for more than just its cold beer and fine cheese. A n n u a l l y , from early June to late August, our

friends to the north pack plenty of brews and bust out all-weekend-long the mega country fests. For those who tote an Illinois driver’s license, don’t fret. With a few fun-tips and this handy guide, Illinoisans can learn how to play incognito to avoid looking like a sausage (err. Bratwurst).

Depending on how far fans are willing to travel, there are several ways strategically make summer plans. Most of the festivals are a week apart therefore; proper planning can maximize the “superfan” experience.

In June, Country USA kicks off in Oshkosh on June 22 while Country Fest fires up in Cadott on June 24.

In July, Country Thunder, in Twin Lakes, and Country Jam, in Eau Claire, share the July 22 weekend. Country Thunder is considerably closer than Country Fest but both fests are well worth the trip. The new kid on the block this year is the Log Jam Fest in Phillips and it boasts a great lineup and fun additional activities. If timed correctly, fans could hit Log Jam with Country Thunder or Country Jam.

They all have excellent, star-studded lineups with tons of great food and brew. For the outdoor enthusiast, some packages include on-site camping. Consider making reservations early, as VIP/reserved seating move quickly. Camping generally requires multi-day passes and reserved sites go quick. Hotel rooms are typically very limited and usually way off site.

NEW: Log Jam Fest – Phillips (July 30 – Aug. 1, 2010) logjamfest.com

Log Jam Fest is the newest addition to this list. While it’s the farthest North, the lineup and activities look well worth the drive and the Philips area is beautiful.

Fans could really turn it into a great North Woods get-a-way. Major headliners include Montgomery Gentry, Cowboy Troy, Jake Owen, The Lost Trailers, Josh Gracin, Jeffrey Steele, Randy Houser and Gretchen Wilson. Plus one of our local artists, the PenneMaeDixon Band.

Ticket Options: 1 – 3 Day General Admission, Reserved Seating, Camping add-on

Country Thunder – Twin Lakes (July 22 – 25, 2010) countrythunder.com

Country Thunder has been a Stateline favorite for many years and 2010 boasts a stellar lineup. Best of all, if you can’t manage the whole festival, you can hop up for a night or two but the best seats, and camping, are reserved for four-day pass holders. Country Thunder is one of Kenny Chesney only stops on his very limited-engagement tour this summer. Could be one of his only shows for awhile! 2010 Headliners include, Kenny Chesney, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, Sawyer Brown, Jason Aldean, Billy Currington,

Ticket Options: 1 – 4 Day General Admission, Reserved Seating, Camping add-on

Country Jam – Eau Claire (July 22 – 24, 2010) – countryjam.com

Country Jam, while completely different fests and organizers, could be considered Country Thunder’s counterpart when you compare lineups. For fans who have a bit more time, this fest is well worth the extra drive. The Eau Claire area is a wonderful and the festival is pretty impressive. Featuring Jason Aldean, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, Kellie Pickler, Billy Currington, Sawyer Brown, Big Kenny, LoCash Cowboys and Tim Sigler with additional acts to be announced.

Ticket Options: 1 – 3 Day General Admission, Reserved Seating,

Skybox Seats, Camping add-on

Country Fest – Cadott (June 24 – 27, 2010) countryfest.com

For most Illinoisans, the little town of Cadott is probably not on their radar. After a glance at lineup, it doesn’t seem so off the beaten path. Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Lady Antebellum, Blake

Shelton, Toby Keith, Jamey Johnson, Darius Rucker, Rodney Atkins, Pat Green, Eric Church, Jo Dee Messina, Little Big Town, Neal McCoy, Heidi Newfield, Jason Michael

Carroll, Darryl Worley, Eli Young Band, Trailer Choir and Walker Hayes. Ticket Options: 1 – 4 Day General Admission, Reserved Seating, Camping add-on

Country USA – Oshkosh (June 22 – 26, 2010) countryusaoshkosh.com

For those who are looking for an early start to summer “festing”, Country USA in Oshkosh is that early alternative. Best of all, the festival is going high-tech with WiFi for those who just can leave their laptop or iPhones at home.

Festival headliners include, Toby Keith, Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker, Zac Brown Band, Randy Houser, Jason Aldean, Darryl Worley, Rodney Atkins, Jason Michael Carroll, Confederate Railroad, Luke Bryan, Jack Ingram, Tracy Byrd, Lonestar and Sawyer Brown.

Ticket Options: 1 – 4 Day General Admission, Reserved Seating, Camping add-on

Festival Tips: Don’t forget to bring plenty of sunscreen and bug spray as the festivals are typically in farm-field

like conditions. The festivals are rain-or-shine so prepare for the elements. An all-terrain vehicle never hurts for those muddy fields. Always keep an open mind as large festivals and remember, this is Packers country so keep those Chicago Bears jerseys under wraps. Most importantly, have fun but always play responsibly. Remember to respect fellow concertgoers as we’re all fans. See you this summer, Eh.

Opryland

The Grand Ole Opry 2802 Opryland Drive, Nashville opry.com

In relation to country music, the Grand Ole Opry and Nashville are downright s y n o n y m o u s . Rooted deep in Nashville’s, and country music’s, history the Grand

Ole Opry has evolved from a radio broadcast program, started in 1925, to the ultimate country music live-entertainment experience that pays tribute to both country music’s past and present. Still broadcasting today on WSM, the Grand Ole Opry is the longest running radio program in America.

The Opry has changed homes over the years and it is now located approximately nine miles northeast of downtown Nashville. Visitors will find the playhouse snuggled with the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, Opry Mills Mall, The General Jackson Showboat and some other area tourist and

dining attractions in what is called the Opryland Area.

From Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley to George Jones and Loretta Lynn the Opry has a long list of members who regularly perform.

When in Nashville, be sure to catch a show. Times and program themes vary so check with the box office for ticket information or visit opry.com. Don’t forget to swing by the Opry Museum when you visit.

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum222 Fifth Ave. S, Nashville countrymusichalloffame.com

Located in downtown Nashville, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum has become a 130,000-square-foot interactive tribute to all things country music. From the early beginnings to Elvis and Johnny Cash and Garth Brooks, the Museum offers visitors a state-of-the-art learning experience. autograph session. In the past, country music greats such as Reba McEntire, LeAnn Rimes and Taylor Swift have participated in the star-studded exposition.

The four-day festival is an excellent opportunity for fans to catch some the hottest country acts in the city where it all started. While the artists are not compensated for their performances, the CMA donates half the net proceeds from the festival to support music education in Metro Nashville Public Schools.

2010 CMA Music Festival will be held, June 10-13 in downtown Nashville. Admittance to the Riverfront Park Stage is free, but four-day ticket holders have an exclusive 45-minute, early-entrance window before the gates open to the general public.

The Ryman Auditorium116 Fifth Avenue North, Nashville ryman.com

Just north of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum sits another piece of historic Nashville real estate. The Ryman Auditorium, often referred to as the Church of Country Music, has been the host of some of the biggest names in music over the years and was even the home the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Even today, with acts like Lady Antebellum and Bake Shelton, the Ryman still serves as a downtown concert and event venue. Self-guided tours of the facility are available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Union Station Hotel1001 Broadway, Nashville unionstationhotel.com

The Wyndham Union Station Hotel located on upper Broadway, just a few blocks from the downtown entertainment district. As the name suggests, the building, once served as Nashville’s main train station. Today, it’s one of Nashville’s premier hotels and in the guest rooms; visitors would never guess the building was over 100 years old.

Like most downtown hotels, visitors should prepare for valet parking but guests typically do not need to leave much by car as many attractions are within walking distance.

Entertainment District & Broadway Ave.visitmusiccity.com

Along Broadway Ave, visitors will find souvenir, leather goods, music shops and bars down “the strip”. By day, the streets are busy with tourists and shoppers and by night, the co-mingled honky tonks are playin’ it live and loud. While it would be easy to spend several hours walking along the strip, there are a few must-stop shops along the way.

Ernest Tubb Record Shop417 Broadway, Nashville ernesttubb.com

As most record shops across the U.S. have gone to the wayside, Ernest Tubb’s is still alive and very vibrant. Located on Broadway Ave, this palace of hard-to-find traditional country and bluegrass is easily a downtown favorite. Hours very, check before you visit. They also have a second location in the Opryland area.  Ask for a mail order catalog!Dolly Parton’s Trinkets & Treasures 125 2nd Ave, Nashvilledollypartonmusic.net

One of the newest downtown attractions, and quite possibly one of the most colorful, is Dolly Parton’s signature shop. Officially opened in March 2010, the Dolly inspired shop features a mix of Dolly-centric items for fans of all ages, including a music selection stocked with Parton’s records.

Nightlife

The nightlife experience in downtown Nashville is second-to-none. While it can be a bit touristy it’s quite a vibrant live music scene. From the Wildhorse Saloon to Legends Bar, the spirits, dancing and country music flow freely. While the set list is much longer than this, here’s a few best bets.

Wildhorse Saloon120 2nd Ave. North, Nashville wildhorsesaloon.com

One of the most recognized names downtown is the Whilehorse Saloon. With regularly scheduled live entertainment, full-service restaurant and bar the Saloon is located just off Broadway on 2nd Street. Don’t be shy, the Whilehorse boasts a very large dance floor (3,300-square-feet) with regularly scheduled dance lessons. (You could compare this to Chicago’s Joe’s Bar minus the dancing)

Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge 422 Broadway, Nashville tootsies.net

Known for its pale Orchid (purple) exterior, Tootsie’s has been the watering hole for many country music greats, past and present. Form one of Willie Nelson’s first gigs to Kenny Chesney recent drop in; the bar has quite an amazing history. The legendary bar gets its name from Tootsie Bess who purchased it in 1960 and has been the launching

pad for many up-and-coming acts over the years. Legends Corner428 Broadway, Nashville legendscorner.com

For most, Legends is the first bar they’ll see, or hear, as they approach the strip. Known for its live music, this corner bar is located next to the Ryman Auditorium at 5th and

Broadway. Just as the name suggests, album covers of some of the biggest names in country music are splashed on the walls and just outside of the bar you’ll frequently find tourists taking pictures with the iconic oversized tribute guitar.

The Stage412 Broadway, Nashville thestageonbroadway.com

Just down the way you’ll find The Stage. (excuse the rhyme) As the name suggests, this bar boasts some great live music from some of today’s hottest up-and-coming and named acts. By the way, it’s not uncommon to rub shoulders with your favorite country music star here.

COUNTRY DANCING GUIDE“We play both kinds of music here, Country and Western!”

While the style of country music, and the clubs that pay it, have changed over the years, there is one thing that remains synonymies to the genre, country line dancing. Whether you’re a pro or new to the floor, suburban Chicago offers the best bet for some boot scootin’ boogie. From the very north to the very south, local clubs offer lessons from professional trainers and often feature great live music from hometown acts. For those who are not so adventurous, just grab a brew and soak in the tunes.

One of the newest kids on the country club scene is the Saddle Up Saloon and Dancehall. Located in west suburban Aurora, Saddle Up Saloon offers free beginner and intermediate dance lessons four nights a week.

Before you hit the dance floor, be sure to dress comfortably and try to stick with hard-sole boots or shoes.

LOCAL ARTIST GUIDE

By: Julie KaylinLocal Artist and Special Contributor

When one thinks of country music, images of Nashville’s famed honky tonks, the Grand Ole Opry and the Ryman Auditorium just might spring to mind. But country music fans in Chicago need not to travel to Tennessee for live country music, as a multitude of talented country artists and bands have exploded onto the Chicagoland music scene to perform throughout the city and suburbs year-round. Whether one is in the mood to hear modern country favorites, traditional country classics or even some homegrown music performed by local artists, Chicago’s country music scene offers something for everyone.

Here’s the low-down on some of Chicagoland’s best up-and-coming acts.

Grimm Taylor is one Chicago country/southern rock band that joined the ranks about a year ago. Clad in leather pants and cowboy hats, they approach every live show as a party. They have

even been known to spray unsuspecting fans with Silly String. While the Grimm Taylor boys play mostly cover songs by such artists at Big & Rich, Garth Brooks, Montgomery Gentry and Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band is working on some original tunes to sprinkle into their set. Their songwriting has already paid off with one of their original tunes being used as a theme song by the National Hot Rod Association. grimmtaylor.com

Jin and Tonic has been delighting crowds with a dynamic, harmony-packed live show for the past three years. The girl-power duo just released their much-

anticipated debut album on May 21st at an album release party at Joe’s Bar. The band performs original tunes as well as songs by country favorites like Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert, The Dixie Chicks and Little Big Town. jinandtonicband.com

Julie Kaylin is a country/adult contemporary singer and songwriter who calls the western suburbs her home. Blending heartfelt melodies, powerful lyrics and elegantly polished vocals, Kaylin’s singing and songwriting skills have been captivating audiences for the

past several years. She has received multiple awards for her songwriting and is currently recording and producing an album at a state-of-the-art recording studio in Chicagoland. When she is not in the studio, Kaylin joins her band to play her original songs as well as country and soft rock tributes at area venues and festivals. The Julie Kaylin Band recently performed at Six Flags Great America, in Gurnee, and the Frankfort Fall Festival. juliekaylin.com

Lucky Town has been a country fan favorite since 2007. Showcasing male and female lead vocals, four-part harmonies, high energy live shows and top-notch musicianship, the band tours regularly throughout the Midwest and performed at last year’s Chicago Country Music Festival in Grant Park. Lucky Town plays mostly contemporary country cover tunes, a few traditional country standards and even a couple of original songs. luckytownmusic.com

Katie Quick is a gifted singer and songwriter who hails from the South Side of Chicago and was a lead singer for Yard Fulla Cars for several years. Her debut, self-produced album, “Be The Change”, was released just over one year ago. After the success of her album

Page 19: Country Music Chicago 2010 Concert, Fair and Festival Guide

release, Quick followed her dreams and moved to Nashville in March to further cultivate her songwriting skills and take her music career to the next level. In the midst of her travels, Quick maintains a strong connection to her Chicagoland fans. “There are just as many country

fans in Chicago as there are in Nashville,” said Quick. “What’s great about fans in Chicago is that they get really excited about country music, whereas in Nashville, country music is more of an everyday thing.” Quick is excited about returning to her hometown to perform at this year’s Taste of Chicago on July 4. katiequick.com

The Smokin’ Gunz have been entertaining at clubs, casinos, festivals and charity events in Chicagoland since 1998, and they also have

strong fan support and regularly perform in Indiana, Wisconsin and the Rockford area. The band has a hard-driving country/rock edge and plays modern top 40 country songs heard on area radio stations. The Smokin’ Gunz especially love to get the crowd tapping its toes and line dancing. smokingunz.net

S u b u r b a n Cowboys is one of Chicagoland’s newest country bands. While only being formed two months ago, this Lake County-based band has already experienced the thirst for country music in the area and has seen solid fan support at their first two gigs. The Suburban Cowboys play all cover tunes, about 75 percent of which are contemporary country (by such artists as Keith Urban and Dierks Bentley) and 25 percent of which are old school country gems (by such artists as Kenny Rogers and the Oak Ridge Boys). suburbancowboysband.com

The White Saddle Band, formed in 1980, is a staple of the Chicago country music scene. In the band’s 30 years, they have performed at the United Center, U.S. Cellular Field and at a multitude of clubs, festivals and private parties. The White Saddle Band has developed an alternative country sound and they relish taking Motown, pop, calypso, blues and classic rock tunes while giving them a distinct country twist with a pedal steel guitar. The band has also incorporated some original music from their new CD “Three To Get Ready” into their set and will celebrate their 30th anniversary throughout 2010 with CD giveaways and promotions. thewhitesaddleband.com

Yard Fulla Cars puts on an exhilarating live show with powerhouse vocals that are pleasing to audience members of any age. The Band thoroughly enjoys playing modern country tributes by some of country’s hottest artists such as Sugarland, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert. Since 2005, Yard Fulla Cars has performed at many festivals and clubs throughout the Chicago metro area. Additionally, the band has entertained at the Illinois State Fair and has been featured on a nationally broadcasted radio shows. yardfullacars.com

The array of thriving country bands in Chicagoland is a testament to the number of country music fans and the strength of the country music scene in the Chicago area. While every artist places a unique spin on the country sound, they are united in their love for the trade and their passion for spreading great country music throughout the Windy City.
