2017 Chair Report

This year has been fairly quiet. After 2 years off the chair position I came back in at the AGM of 2016. It has been my honor to have had this role in the past year and to represent the members of Chapter 15 Local 58. I also served on the Local Council of which I was only able to attend a few times due to circumstances out of my control. I would like to thank the alternates who filled in during these times. I went to convention which was a totally different experience due to a single position election. Voting that took forever to accomplish. As a result the V.P. elected that weekend is now the V.P. that represents our Local. I also had the opportunity to take an updating course for Steward. I thought the course was good and it was great to be updated with things that Stewards need when dealing with the many day to day needs of members. It seems like not many days go by without being approached by members wanting help or answers or suggestions to situations they might be in.

Due to the many changes coming up especially in the areas of bargaining and the fact we now have a tool we didn’t have before and that is the right to strike. With this we will have to define what and who is essential services.

In closing I would like to thank you for your support and say that I am willing to continue as Chair if this is the will of Chapter 15 membership.

Employer AHS used “AUPE name and their relationship with AUPE as part of their IT Security Awareness campaign” - Employer issued an apology letter.

Met the Essential Services Agreement (ESA) Team – who are currently working on ANC (Sturgeon Hospital) agreement. It should be noted AUPE has creates an EAS department staffed to work on this initiative. This is new for everyone and they want to get it right. The ESA team is slated to meet with the employer (GSS) in April/May timeframe to start the process.

Review member responses to survey. Listed all concerns and identified our top 5-7 issues the members wished to address. We did notice that there were several ANC members answering the GSS survey in error (based on the issues and answers given to our survey)

Reviewed Articles in the collective agreement. Proposing over 45 changes/additions to the current agreement. On several articles we are waiting for input from Carol Drennan (AUPE Staff). Negotiator will also be researching a few other areas for us and will present at the next meeting. Chris (negotiator) will be compiling our proposals for us to review at the next meeting, scheduled for March 23, 2017 in Edmonton.

NOTE: Personal opinion on the process. Seems rushed. Granted AUPE has done their homework and several proposals going forward were derived from last round. And as there was a lot of knowledge in the room… I still would have preferred (as a new bargainer) a little more time to review…. Guess I have home work to do. Next meeting March 23, 2017

Local 058 Communications Coordinator

Emailed out to the membership twice, the GSS Survey request and links for bargaining. Emailed out to the membership sporting event offer at the request of the Chair. We have 5 subscribers removed from the listing – (Retired members). Legislative Committee

Committee has not met since Convention. We have been emailing and gathering data and aligning work remotely in preparation for the next meeting Scheduled for April 20th

Pending Workplace Health and safe:

1. WPHAS Meeting discrepancies.

Admin co-chair would cancel, move re-location time and days with no advance warning. Made it difficub to plan daily schedule. All three union expressed concerned. MSO contact myself as a result of not being consistent RE: Attending Meeting. Condudion was part union rep fault and the also the above concerned. Three unions Rep (UNA, AUPE, and Health Sciences) wrote letter to Occupational Health & Safety Advisor to express concern. An issue was resolved. Both co-chairs also have concerns about the lack of repetition from AUPE-AUX

2. Bullying, Harassment, Intimidation & Professional Conduct Staff to Staff Concerning issue is high within the committee. All 4 parties have seen an increase in these issues. Recommended that individuals fill out on the lnsite web page under Incident Report Report on My Safety Net Staff to Staff can be found on the AHS website WPHS & H.R. have been very cooperative

3. Bullying, Harassment, lntimidation & Professional Conduct Staff to Patient Concerning issue is high within the committee. All 4 parties have seen an increase in these issues. Increase amount of staff member have approach me (Two Dept in particular Outpatient Mental Health & SNorth). Both Auxiliary member and GSS staff have met with me, are worried and have had increased concerns about patient to staff safety. Recommended that individuals fill out on the lnsite web page under Incident Report any remote issues they feel any possibility of a pending incident. RLS Patient Staff Incident can be found on the AHS website WPHS & H.R. have been very cooperative.

I would like to run for Council Representative again this year. I have been working in the Housekeeping Department at MedHat Hospital for 29 years. I was fortunately voted into Council Rep last year and I really learned a lot and enjoyed the experience.

I feel it would be a benefit to the membership for me to be there a second year now that I know the ropes, I will have much more to add to the group.

I would like to run for Convention Delegate again this year. I have been working in the Housekeeping Department at MedHat Hospital for 29 years. I was fortunately voted into be a delegate last year and I learned a lot of the processes and feel I am more informed with how it works.

I feel it would be a greater benefit to the 100 members I would represent for me to be there a second year.

I would like to run for Convention Delegate again this year. I have been working in various clerical positions at MedHat Hospital for 32 years. I am currently working in Admitting. I was voted as first alternate Convention Delegate last year and when another delegate cancelled at the last minute, I cleared my schedule to step up to the plate so that 100 members DID have a voice at convention! The experience was overwhelming and I was thankful that my fellow delegates had been to convention before and could show me the way it works.

I would like you to vote for me today because I feel that now I have the knowledge and experience to represent 100 members.

AUPE’s Pension Committee believes that it is vital that all AUPE members enrolled in a pension plan

understand exactly what it means for their retirement. As a result, the committee has asked experts from

the Alberta Pension Services Corporation to offer in-depth sessions on members’ pensions. The sessions

will take place this spring in Red Deer, Grande Prairie, and Medicine Hat.

The information session will provide members with general information about their pension plan. Topics

include contribution rates, pension calculation, and retirement options, among others.

Pension seminars will be held at AUPE offices in Red Deer on April 11, Grande Prairie on May 16,

and Medicine Hat on May 23 (LAPP) and May 26 (PSPP). Members must RSVP for the appropriate

seminar, as morning sessions in each location will be specific to PSPP and afternoon sessions will be

specific to LAPP. Members will be granted time off for union business — up to four hours total

including travel time — to attend the session. Only members from those servicing areas can sign up for

the sessions; more sessions will be organized in other servicing areas at later dates.
