Something needs to be doneMaxwell Nkuna writes:

Every week a car accident or two occur at Nkowankowa crossing on the Lydenburg road and no one seems to care about it.

Road signs removed during service delivery protest by residents of Mokgoloboto late last year have not been replaced.

According to motorists, there are always a lot of traffi c law enforcement offi cers at Nkowankowa crossing but they seem to be only interested in taking bribes.

Even if your car tyres are worn out or you are carrying an over load all you do is pay a

bribe and pass. Something needs to be done before many lives are lost.

Higher certificates - providing a foot in the higher education door

Many of last year’s matriculants now fi nd themselves in a situation where their plans to study towards a degree this year were thwarted by marks which didn’t allow them to make the cut.

But an education expert says that there is still a way for those who remain determined to study towards a bachelor’s degree: that of pursuing a Higher Certifi cate, which will allow them to take the next step without having to repeat their matric.

Dr Anne-Ka van den Hoek, Academic Manager at the Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution, says a Higher Certifi cate is a great option for these prospective students.

Van den Hoek says it is important that matriculants check that the institution they register with for a Higher Certifi cate, supports all students with focused academic literacy modules and a full year programme designed to bridge the gap between school and higher education.

She says that Higher Certifi cates have replaced many foundation programmes, as they provide students with an opportunity

to gain a full qualifi cation while at the same time mastering those essential skills needed for higher education success – broadly known as academic literacies.

“These range from how to engage successfully with academic material, to how to review information and present it appropriately with the level of synthesis required for successful academic study,” she says.

But she also warns that, while all degrees at public and private higher education institutions are subject to the same quality assurance requirements, they are not all alike.

Van den Hoek says that those students who were not accepted at the institution of their choice, didn’t gain a Bachelor’s pass, or who need to strengthen their academic abilities before studying for a degree, will all do well to consider the Higher Certifi cate route.

“It may take you a little bit longer to get there, but the experience and ultimate achievement will be well worth it, and will set you on the road to the career you’ve dreamed of but deemed out of reach.”

MOPANI HERALD Friday January 16, 2015 7SPORTS

KLG basks in the glory of the 2014 seasonThe 2014 soccer season of the Kaizer Letsoalo Games

(KLG) Soccer League will be remembered as arguably the best year for the famous KLG Sport family.

This is the view expressed by the Chairman of KLG Sport, Marupine Sape. He said it was the year the saw the management committee of KLG introduce the much talked about Premier and Super divisions of their exciting soccer league programme.

In the preceding year, the KLG Soccer League comprised two equal divisions simply known as the Green and Yellow streams. The Premier and Super divisions created historic platforms and vibes that literally took this area by storm.

The 2014 season entailed the Top 8 Soccer Challenge which was eventually won by Golden Aces, the introduction of the Premier and Super Division which were won by Manamela Naughty Boys and Rita All Stars respectively, the Annual Schools Sport Event and the Pamo Cup which was won by Leswika Classic. All these activities, including weekly league matches, drew large crowds overall. The pinnacle of the league competition was the Premier title-deciding

match between Leswika Classic and Manamela Naughty Boys hosted at the Swika la motheo ground in the Tickeyline-Motlhatlareng area; as well as the Super title-deciding encounter between Mokomotji Highlanders and Rita All Stars staged at the Mokomotji ground. Both these events recorded an unprecedented attendance by sport fanatics of the KLG Sport. The attendance was bolstered by the presence of ward councillors, headmen and Royal Houses of Batlhabine ‘a Makatikelekadichipi and Bakgagabaga Maake.

According to Sape, the highlights of the year were these title-deciding matches at both the Swika la Motheo and Mokomotji grounds. “We are truly thankful to all our communities for the support and unprecedented turnout. Indeed it was the fi rst time that such supported was shown in the history of sport in the area”, he said.

A fascinating development for the KLG Sport last season was the introduction of Merafe FM (a true radio station of the people) and local deejays such as DJ Monadha, DJ Rackzen, Richy and DJ Knorrox to the programmes of KLG Sport.

“As the Sport Committee of KLG, we have no reason to

doubt the good support, commitment and loyalty from all in our communities as we approach the new season”.

The Administrator of KLG Sport, TrillyMogoboya, said it was as a rest of these huge activities and the success of KLG that they continuously receive too many enquiries from different new teams interested in participating in the KLG Soccer League this season.

Some of the new teams that have shown interest in the activities of KLG Sport, particularly the two divisions of the KLG Soccer League, include Ramalema Mighty Birds, Ramalema Golden Birds, Nabane Hotspurs, Juliesburg United and Bokgaga Silverstone.

Meanwhile, a general meeting of all teams, including any other interested teams, is scheduled for this Sunday morning at the Lephepane Child Care Centre.
