March 3, 2012
Dear Debutantes, Parents, and Friends:
It is indeed a pleasure to represent the members of the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and the Ivy Community Center, Incorporated in welcoming you to the 22nd Annual Debutante Cotillion Ball. Ten wonderful young ladies have worked hard during the past months in preparing for this evening.. . an evening which I believe will be very special for them and for you. Many of you have inspired these young ladies and have encouraged them to have the desire, determination and vision to succeed and tonight you should celebrate with them as they are formally introduced to the community.
The Debutante Cotillion Scholarship Program consists of more than just preparing for the Cotillion Ball. These young ladies attend workshops and cultural events, and participate in service projects. These activities assist our Debutantes to successfully make the transition into young adulthood. The program also consists of fundraising activities which ultimately will help ease the financial burden of their college education through the awarding of scholarships. A special “thank you” is extended to everyone who has unselfishly supported our Debutantes in all aspects of our Debutante Cotillion Scholarship Program.
To the hardworking, dedicated, and committed Cotillion Committee; words alone cannot express our sincere thanks for your diligent and unwavering dedication to this important program. You should celebrate this evening as well!
Debutantes, may you realize that with hard work and perseverance, many of your dreams may be realized. Keep in touch with us and share all of the “good news” you will experience in the years to come!
Sincerely, Dr. Tara L. Fikes, President Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated

March 3, 2012
Greetings from the 20112012 Cotillion CoChairpersons
On behalf of the 20112012 Cotillion Committee, we present this souvenir journal commemorating the 22nd Annual Cotillion Scholarship Program sponsored by the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
We are delighted to be a part of the Debutantes’ memories of their senior year in high school. These ten Debutantes are beautiful, talented, and energetic young women and we are very excited to present these young ladies to the Durham community at the March 3 Cotillion Ball at the Carolina Theater in Durham, NC. The committee planned and worked closely with the Debutantes to ensure that this year’s ball would be a dream come true.
Since 1990, by sponsoring the Annual Cotillion Scholarship Program, the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has provided collegebound young ladies the opportunity to raise funds for their postsecondary educations, attend cultural and civic events, and participate in community service projects that make it possible for them to give something back to the Durham community in which they live. As they move forward into the next chapter of their lives, we challenge the Debutantes to appreciate the bonding experience and life lessons learned during the past eight months they have participated in the Cotillion Program.
We also applaud and thank the Debutantes’ parents for their patience, guidance and enduring spirit in this journey with their daughters and with the committee members. Without your active participation in the Cotillion Program, and their willingness to share their precious pearls with us, the 20112012 program would not have been a successful effort.
We are eternally grateful to the Senior & Junior Marshals for their hard work learning the dances. The young ladies appreciate your commitment and long hours of practice to make their dreams come true.
Finally, we would like to thank the members of the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter who gave of their time and resources in our continued efforts to be of service to mankind.
2012 Cotillion Debutantes, we wish God’s blessings and mercy upon you as you continue your life’s journey.
Sincerely, Mrs. Connie Britt and Mrs. Norma Martin 20112012 Cotillion Committee CoChairs
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter History
In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became America’s first Greekletter organization established by and for AfricanAmerican women. Her roots date back to Howard University in Washington D.C. where Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri conceived the idea for the organization. She viewed the sorority as an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends and associates.
Alpha Kappa Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards, promotes unity and friendship among college women, alleviates problems concerning girls and women, maintains a progressive interest in college life, and serves all mankind through a nucleus of more than 260,000 women in 900 chapters.
In 2008, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. celebrated its Centennial with a myriad of events and activities during the national conference in Washington, D.C.
Alpha Zeta Omega was the first Greekletter sorority in the City of Durham as well as the third chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha to be established in the State of North Carolina. The chapter was chartered on April 14, 1928 by eight sorors who wanted to establish a chapter in Durham, N.C. Those sorors were Majorie Shepard, Frances Eagleson, Bernice W. Jones, Jean Holtzclaw, Byrd Jackson, Beatrice Qualls Burnette, Alda Fortune and Gladys Powell.
Alpha Zeta Omega has over eighty years of history that is full of rich tradition and a testimony to its national goal of “Service to All Mankind”. The chapter embraces Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national great mission, “Global Leadership through Timeless Service” as outlined by our International President, Carolyn House Stewart. Signature program initiatives for the mission include the following: Emerging Young Leaders, Asthma Prevention and Management, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability, Global Poverty, Economic Security, Social Justice and Human Rights, and Internal Leadership Training for External Service.
In 1995, the members of Alpha Zeta Omega established the Ivy Community Center, Inc. as a nonprofit tax exempt corporation. The purpose of the corporation is to promote the well being and betterment of people in our community. Additionally, the corporation sought to acquire a facility for the members of the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter to meet, plan and conduct community outreach services.
The chapter continues its recognition of academic excellence by awarding scholarships to outstanding college bound students. Supporting the charitable efforts such as the National Council of Negro Women, John Avery Boys’ & Girls’ Club, and United Negro College Fund continues to be a focus of the chapter.
The tradition of “Service to All Mankind” continues as Alpha Zeta Omega implements programs that serve the community by providing educational opportunities, supporting the arts, and highlighting health issues.

Dear Family, Friends, Supporters and Mentors,
It’s hard to find words to express my gratitude and sincere thanks for all of your generous support. I have the special honor of being crowned the 2012 Cotillion Queen. Many thanks go to Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for formally introducing me to society in a manner which will never be forgotten.
I have enjoyed the cultural and educational activities and meeting nine wonderful and talented young ladies “my deb sisters”. It was great getting to know all of you. I would like to give an awesome thanks to my parents, siblings, grandparents, aunt, uncles, and cousins. Without you and your support, none of this would be possible and I am forever grateful.
Special thanks to my mentoring team of Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for giving your valuable time, encouragement, guidance and monetary help. You are the greatest and I truly appreciate each of you for making this an experience that I will cherish forever.
