Corvette Expressions 3rd Edition—Volume 136 January, 2018

Greetings, and welcome to the January, 2018 issue of Corvette Expressions. December was a quiet month for activities. Some members braved the first snow storm of the year on December 9 to enjoy dinner at Old Man Rafferty’s and a Christmas show (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever) at the Somerset Valley Playhouse. Thank-you to Linda Fernandez for organizing this fun, holiday excursion. Just a reminder that the Corvette Express Holiday Party will be held on Saturday, January 27 from 7:00 to 11:00pm at Yesterdays Restaurant in Hazlet. The cost is $36.00 per person, which includes a buffet and cash bar. Payment will be accepted at the next meet-ing which is Wednesday, January 3. As 2017 comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Corvette Express members and their families a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year! See you at the next meeting. Lisa Force Newsletter Editor

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2018 and another great year ahead for Cor-vette Express. First, let me start by thanking everyone for their help in making 2017 a very successful club year. Everyone from the committee members, event planners and coordina-tors, our internet and newsletter editors, Greg Heh for his tremendous work in printing our newsletter, and to our executive board members. As you may have seen from my e-mails, Linda Sawitsky will be assuming the role of sec-retary, as Ingrid was not able to continue. We thank them both for their commitment to Corvette Express, as the secretary's position is vital to our organization. Moving forward into 2018, we should continue member-ship growth (which has exceeded 100 members,) have a diverse and frequent activities roster for all members, and continue to be fiscally sound. Bill Zide is collecting 2018 dues, and if you're not able to attend our monthly meetings, they can be mailed to our P.O. Box. Our newsletter has started to print member "ads" and our website is continuing to evolve with more club photos and information. Thanks again to Lisa and Kathy for all they do. Our first meeting of 2018 is on Wednesday, January 3rd. We will be finalizing details, and collecting pay-ment from those attending the holiday party on Sat. Jan. 27th. as well as discussing upcoming events already planned for this year. Hope to see you there. Thank-you. Yours in Corvettes, Rob Lombardi

As promised, the new 2019 Corvette ZR1 is the fastest and most powerful in the nameplate's 64-year history. But this is a ZR1 that has been built as much for having fun in the corners without coming unstuck as it has been designed for impromptu and (highly illegal) perfectly straight-line drag races between sets of traffic lights. The car's 6.2-liter supercharged V8 has been independently verified as outputting 755hp to the rear wheels while torque available is a huge 969Nm or 715 lb-ft. But GM has done more than simply strap a bigger blower to the crankshaft to force-feed the engine more and more air. This is the first engine from the company that uses both primary injection and supplemental port fuel injection for the biggest possible bang on every revolution. And, what's more, all of that power can be enjoyed via a seven-speed manual or, for the first time ever in a ‘Vette carrying the ZR1 badge, an automatic transmission. However, it's a serious, race-bred eight-speed paddle shift system, so that when the cruising stops, the driver can still very much feel like an integral part of the driving process. "I've never driven a Corvette like this before, and nobody else has either, because there's nev-er been one like this before," said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Develop-ment, Purchasing and Supply Chain. "Its unprecedented performance puts all other global supercars on notice that the ZR1 is back." One would expect hyperbole of this caliber from the car's builders, but on paper at least this car can outperform everything from an Audi R8 V10 Plus to the Porsche 911 Turbo S, the final generation Dodge Viper and the latest generation Bentley Continental Supersports. In fact at 210mph, it's fast-er than any current V8 Ferrari and it's just 2mph away from overtaking a 6.5-litee V12 propelled Ferrari 812 Superfast. Impressive stuff. As is the car's exterior. Available as a hardtop or targa-style convertible, owners will be able to pick from two very differ-ent aero packages. The first comes with a low rear wing that will make hitting the car's top speed simply a matter of holding one's nerve; or there's a ZTK Performance package that adds a front splitter, Michelin Pilot Cup 2 summer-only tires, magnetic ride control suspension (for optimum cornering) and a two-way adjustable high wing that's all about generating huge levels of downforce -- over 400kg -- for track use. "As the highest-performing Corvette ever, the ZR1's design supports its capability in every way," said Kirk Bennion, Exterior Design manager. "The new wings, for example, help generate more downforce without adding drag, enhancing road holding and top speed." Chevrolet is yet to confirm pricing for the car, but as the quintessential blue-collar supercar, expect it to cost much less than any of its European competitors.
