Gail's Challengers storyI discovered Challengers when Fergus was 4 years old, and it has changed our lives – it is our lives.

Unless you are a parent of a disabled child you will never understand what Challengers means to us all.

We can walk the dog all together, go shopping, visit friends for a coffee and watch my twins play sport. All the while, knowing that Fergus is having fun in a safe and stimulating environment. Challengers gives him independence away from me, he mixes with other children but also gets the one to one attention that he needs. The wonderful staff know him and know what he likes so he is able to cook, paint and go on the outside play area.

How RSM Basingstokesupported Challengers

““At RSM Basingstoke we like to support locally based charities and each year the staff can nominate a charity of their choice. Last year a member of staff was contacted by a representative from Challengers and the charity details were put into the nomination list for the office vote. As many of our staff live in Basingstoke we like to support charities that affect local families. Subsequently, Challengers was chosen, hence we have been raising funds from April 2017 to March 2018 inclusive.

We have been holding monthly dressdown days, as well bake sales throughout the year. The other events we have held have been fundraising lunches. In the Summer our accounts team held a Wimbledon themed lunch and held a table tennis tournament as well as a baking competition.

At Christmas we held a Christmas jumper lunch and had Secret Santa Steal. Basically, we purchase and wrap a present (but we don’t know who we’re buying it for) and then take it in turns to open a gift. However, people can choose to ‘steal’ the present rather than open a gift from the pile when it comes to their turn. The gift can be ‘stolen’ a maximum of two times, then it becomes that person’s gift and can no longer be ‘stolen’.

On 14th February, the tax team held a Valentines themed lunch which incorporated yet another baking competition as well as a photo competition – photos of staff at weddings, either as the bride / groom / as a bridesmaid or just dressed up in attendance. All people had to do was pay £2 to enter and guess the members of staff – whose photo had been doctored to make it a tricky!

We’ve had great fun throughout the year raising funds for the charity and, to date, we’ve raised £1,342.71 with the March dressdown still to go.

RSM Basingstoke chose to support Challengers between April 2017 and

March 2018 - this is the story of how they fundraised for us!

Challengers run play and leisure schemes for disabled children and young people aged 2-25 across Surrey and Hampshire. Our vital work also provides a crucial short break to families, siblings and carers from the demands of caring. Last year we delivered 140,000 hours of fun.

The staff are caring, friendly, knowledgeable, professional

and fun! My son has settled far quicker than we ever anticipated and really enjoys it...and comes

home calm. Thank you!
