Cornyn, Hutchison Applaud Senate Confirmation of Gregg Costa and David Guaderrama as FederalJudges

Today, U.S. Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) applauded the Senate confirmation of Gregg J. Costa and DavidC. Guaderrama to fill the judicial vacancies for the Southern District of Texas in Galveston and Western District of Texas in El Paso,respectively:

1. “I’m thrilled Mr. Costa and Mr. Guaderrama, both of whom have impeccable credentials and a passionate commitment to upholding thelaw, were confirmed today,” said Sen. Cornyn. “It was my honor to join Sen. Hutchison in recommending them, and I wish them the verybest as they take on the important work the President and United States Senate have appointed them to do.”

“I am pleased that the Senate voted overwhelmingly to confirm Gregg J. Costa and David C. Guaderrama to fill the judicial vacancies forthe Southern District of Texas in Galveston and the Western District of Texas in El Paso,” said Sen. Hutchison. “Costa's professionalcareer includes being a law clerk for Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist in 2001, as well as his current position as an AssistantUnited States Attorney in Houston, where he recently served as the Co-lead Counsel for the United States in the prosecution of Robert AllenStanford. Judge Guaderrama, as a testament to his service to the El Paso community, has been a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the United StatesDistrict Court for the Western District for the last two years. During his three decades serving in the Texas legal system, Judge Guaderramahas earned many accolades for his leadership in initiating and enacting several successful judicial programs in west Texas. I am confidentthat these two judges will serve well on the federal bench.”

With assistance from their bipartisan Federal Judicial Evaluation Committee, Senators Cornyn and Hutchison (R-TX) recommended themto President Obama in July 2011.

Finally....Factual Details Leading Up To Trayvon Martin Shooting

For the millions of people who have been skeptical to the rumors, racialaccusations, speculation and one-sided media accounts behind the February 26,2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, REUTERS News Service concluded anextensive investigation into the life of George Zimmerman and events leading upto the shooting.

And based on their extensive interviews with relatives, friends, neighbors,schoolmates and co-workers of Zimmerman in two states, law enforcementofficials, and reviews of court documents and police reports, the story sheds newlight on the man at the center of one of the most controversial homicide cases inAmerica.

As facts emerge, we learn that Zimmerman is actually bi-racial, and prior to theshooting there had been a rash of break-ins and burglaries in that community.Police have reports of witnesses identifying the suspects as "young black men." Infact one witness, a black female neighbor is quoted saying..."There were blackboys robbing houses in this neighborhood, That's why George was suspicious ofTrayvon Martin."

Prelude To A Shooting

According to Reuters....The first time the dog ran free and cornered Shellie in theirgated community in Sanford, Florida, George called the owner to complain. Thesecond time, Big Boi frightened his mother-in-law's dog. Zimmerman calledSeminole County Animal Services and bought pepper spray. The third time he sawthe dog on the loose, he called again. An officer came to the house, county recordsshow.

"Don't use pepper spray," he told the Zimmermans, according to a friend. "It'll taketwo or three seconds to take effect, but a quarter second for the dog to jump you,"he said. "Get a gun." That November, the Zimmermans completed firearms trainingat a local lodge and received concealed-weapons gun permits. In early December,another source close to them told Reuters, the couple bought a pair of guns. Georgepicked a Kel-Tec PF-9 9mm handgun, a popular, lightweight weapon.

By June 2011, Zimmerman's attention had shifted from a loose pit bull to a waveof robberies that rattled the community, called the Retreat at Twin Lakes. Thehomeowners association asked him to launch a neighborhood watch, andZimmerman would begin to carry the Kel-Tec on his regular, dog-walking patrol -a violation of neighborhood watch guidelines but not a crime. Few of his closestneighbors knew he carried a gun - until two months ago.

On February 26, George Zimmerman shot and killed unarmed black teenagerTrayvon Martin in what Zimmerman says was self-defense. The furor that ensuedhas consumed the country and prompted a re-examination of guns, race and self-defense laws enacted in nearly half the United States. During the time Zimmermanwas in hiding, his detractors defined him as a vigilante who had decided Martinwas suspicious merely because he was black.

After Zimmerman was finally arrested on a charge of second-degree murder morethan six weeks after the shooting, prosecutors portrayed him as a violent and angryman who disregarded authority by pursuing the 17-year-old. But a more nuanceportrait of Zimmerman has emerged from a Reuters investigation intoZimmerman's past and a series of incidents in the community in the monthspreceding the Martin shooting.

SAN JACINTO COUNTYRESIDENTS CAN CLAIM

FORGOTTEN FUNDS

San Jacinto County residents who think— or hope — they might have somemoney waiting in the state’s UnclaimedProperty database can search the list at anevent hosted by the Texas Comptroller’soffice and San Jacinto County TreasurerAngie Beard.

The Comptroller’s office reports that SanJacinto County residents currently haveabout 8,400 unclaimed properties, worthmore than $900,000.

“The current balance in the state’sUnc la imed Proper ty fund i sapproximately $2.5 billion,” said TexasComptroller Susan Combs. “That moneybelongs to Texans, and it is importantthat we get it back into the right hands.Events like this enable us to educatepeople about forgotten funds, andencourage them to check the UnclaimedProperty list often.”

Staff from the Comptroller’s and CountyTreasurer’s offices will help peoplesearch for unclaimed property online, fillout claim forms and answer questionsabout the Unclaimed Property program.The event will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.on Thursday, May 3, in the San JacintoTreasurer’s Office, located at 1 StateHighway 150, Room 1, in Coldspring.

The Comptroller estimates that one infour Texans has money waiting to beclaimed.
