It is one of the most popular television series today. Glee is about music, dance,

relationships, recognition and more. Glee is about life.

He is one of the members of the legendary band, The

Beatles. Paul McCartney has stretched his talents in all possible avenues these could take him. Knighted in England, he

received this year a prestigious recognition in the United States, performing in the White House before President Barack Obama.

Finishing fourth in the 7th season of American Idol,

Jason Castro made two of the most memorable performances in the show by interpreting Leonard Cohen’s ―Hallelujah‖ and

the classic ―Over the Rainbow‖. He released his first album this year; but there is more to this dude than music.

The birth of Jesus Christ is a time for prayer, as it is a time

for songs. Let us sing carols to the Lord.

The real Santa Claus served as Bishop of

Myra. He is the patron saint of children, sailors, fishermen, merchants, the falsely accused, prostitutes, repentant thieves,

pharmacists, archers and pawnbrokers.

From the Editor:

Television has for years given accessible entertainment to people in most

parts of the world. In 1965, our family had its first television, a Zenith, brought

by an aunt who came home from the United States. Popeye to Lassie,

Gilligan’s Island to Star Trek, Mission Impossible to A-Team, Charlie’s Angels

to X-Files, these brought families together in the living room. Scripted, these

tellies were often wholesome; unlike the genre that exploded in our faces at

the turn of the century: the reality shows. Big Brother, Survivor, The Amazing

Race, The Apprentice and American Idol have spontaneity written all over,

though we know that the producers squeeze in only the “most”, that is

dramatic, embarrassing, inspiring, etc. If there was a poster boy for this genre,

that could be Simon Cowell, who commands audiences in both sides of the

Atlantic.

Surprisingly, a scripted television show – Glee - has risen above the

realitellies in 2010. Glee has gone back to the basics of entertaining viewers:

good script and engaging characters plus great music and lots of dancing. Now

families do gather in the living room, to laugh, to cry, to talk or simply be

together.

Kudos to the producers to Glee; may your kind thrive. We pray that this will

open the door for others to make entertaining shows that value viewers that

value the family.

There is no perfect world, not even in fairytales. Such is the case of the hit TV series, ―Glee‖. It is in

imperfection that goodness eventually comes out in display.

The episode that featured songs from Madonna produced not only a number one selling album, it

actually sent out a message that pre-marital sex is not the norm even in these modern times. Probably,

parents writhed as the first notes of Madonna’s ―Like a Virgin‖ and the characters set the mode

towards intimacy. By the end of the song, they must have heaved in relief as nothing untoward

happened. Without us knowing it, that episode taught young viewers that one doesn’t have to indulge

in pre-marital sex to be cool, to be hip.

Glee is set in the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio and follows the challenges

of a show choir, New Directions, and the lives of its music director, its members and people around

them. Ryan Murphy, Brad Falkchuk and Ian Brennan are the creators. The latter used his personal

experiences as a member of the Prospect High School choir in Illinois, and it took him years to sell

the script to producers and networks.

Since its airing, Glee has not only been a popular success it has also gotten critics writing good

reviews and award-giving bodies handing out recognition. The series won the 2010 Golden Globe

Award for Best Television Series—Musical or Comedy and received three additional nominations for

Best Actress (Lea Michele), Best Actor (Matthew Morrison), and Best Supporting Actress (Jane

Lynch). The show won a People's Choice Award for Favourite New TV Comedy in 2010. Its first

season also earned a Peabody Award.

What make the series connect to a wider audience are the characters and the music. Will Schuester

(Morrison) is the Spanish teacher who wants to bring New Directions to its former glory, while Sue

Sylvester (Lynch) coaches the cheering squad and makes life miserable for Will and his singers.

Rachel (Michele) is the star of the glee club supported by a host of other young talented actors who

ably sing and dance. While the mature characters struggle in their relationships and frustrations, the

younger ones fight for acceptance and deal with contemporary issues that the youth of today

encounter in their lives.

The sound track, selected by producer Murphy, is a mix of classic hits and current chartbusters. The

brilliant soundtrack produced 25 hit singles in the Billboard Hot 100, while reviving interest in the

music of such diverse artists as Journey, Madonna, MC Hammer, and Doors.

With the cast working 18 hours a day, Murphy recently came out with rules to keep his actors

professional and not act on their intimate urges on the set. He told cast members that, ―You guys are

young and hormonal, but I’m the dad, that’s what I say.‖

Glee will soon be on its second season with new characters and guests (among them Filipina singer

Charice, Susan Boyle and Britney Spears) plus great back catalogues such as the music of Coldplay

and Paul McCartney. There will be times when the characters will encounter sensitive issues, and it

may be awkward moments for both adult and young viewers, but hopefully in the end, the moral of

the story is for the good and the Godly to prevail.

Glee is about music; Glee is about our challenges, our struggles and our lives. Glee is about

For one who is a member of the legendary band, The Beatles, Paul McCartney has arrived at what he

is today - his own man, after going through the ―long and winding road‖, to quote one of the songs he

had written with John Lennon.

While most rock stars often fade away in ruin due to drugs, scandals, financial mismanagement,

artistic dryness or old age, Paul McCartney, at 68 years old, continues to carry on with what he is

good at – music, and worthy causes as well.

Already knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Paul on June 3, 2010 received the Library of Congress

Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from US President Obama at the White House in Washington. After

receiving the award, he performed with other popular artists and for the first time did a live version of

―Ebony and Ivory‖ with Stevie Wonder.

In 2010, McCartney got back to the music in his Up

and Coming Tour that captivated Beatlemania fans and

a new generation of admirers, the latter rediscovering

the artistry and innovativeness of the Fab Four and that

of Paul as a solo artist.

―Macca‖, as McCartney is called by British media, used

to live under the shadow of the charismatic John

Lennon who was the poster boy of hippie culture and a

strong anti-war campaigner at the height of the Vietnam

War. The boyish-looking Paul, after the Beatles break-

up, went solo and later formed a band, Wings that

reignited his career. He had his share of encounters

with the law, like his detention in Japan for possession

of marijuana.

Time has mellowed down Paul, partly due to the death

of his wife Linda and maybe because of his advancing

age. As he supports the works of his children, Stella, an

established fashion designer, and James McCartney, a

musician, Paul is an advocate of animal-rights and vegetarianism. In June this year, he spoke about

commercial hunting of whales: ―It's time to end the cruel slaughter of whales and leave these

magnificent creatures alone,‖ the Daily Star quoted him as saying. ―In the 21st century how can we

even contemplate killing whales - or any animal - in such barbaric ways? Governments should act on

their responsibilities and protect these beautiful creatures.‖

And there was that condition to the producers of the popular TV series, The Simpsons that he would

only appear as guest if Liza, one of the characters, will profess to be a vegetarian. The producers met

his condition. On June 15 this year, he launched his Meat Free Monday campaign asking families to

cut out meat on Mondays and reduce global warming. He said, "I think many of us feel helpless in

the face of environmental challenges, and it can be hard to know how to sort through the advice about

what we can do to make a meaningful contribution to a cleaner, more sustainable, healthier world."

He added, "Having one designated meat free day a week is actually a meaningful change that

everyone can make, that goes to the heart of several important political, environmental and ethical

issues all at once."

Sir Paul McCartney is no saint. By the looks of it though, for the causes he is fighting for make him

Was it his smile, his dreadlocks, his voice

or his personality? It could have been the

combination of all that, that brought Jason

Castro to public consciousness during the

seventh season of American Idol (AI). His

heartfelt performances of Leonard

Cohen’s ―Hallelujah‖ and the ukelele-

accompanied ―Over the Rainbow‖ are

among the most memorable in all the

airings of the popular show.

Jason René Castro, of Colombian parents,

was born March 25, 1987, and is

described as ―an American acoustic/folk-

pop singer-songwriter.‖ He is a contract

artist of Atlantic Records and released his

debut album on April 13, 2010. Other

than having his AI performances among the most visited in Youtube, his song, ―Let’s Just Fall in

follow-up single has gained considerable airplay.

After completing a successful tour in Malaysia, Singapore and The Philippines and a Spring Tour in

the US to promote his EP and album, Castro performed on June 2010 at the VG-Lista Festival in

Norway before 100,000 fans.

A devout Christian, Castro is actively involved in charity. He took part in the ―I Am Second‖

campaign discussing openly his Christian faith. He joined R&B singer Patti LaBelle for a Christmas

concert in Garland, Texas, benefiting the Best Education Foundation, an organization that supports

the city's school district and auctioned himself off for charity courtesy of the Grammy Foundation and

MusiCares. This year, Jason was named the inaugural "Staying Alive" Ambassador for Malaria No

More Foundation.

Asked by Christianity Today on how his faith relate to his songwriting and performing, Castro said,

―My faith makes me who I am. That's my rock, and it influences everything I do. People comment a

lot on the passion in my performances, and that passion is something I've found in God and in my

faith. The passion of Christ, that that kind of love would come to die for us—that's inspiring. That's in

my heart always. Everything I do, I want to live a passionate life.‖

Who says nothing happens after a stint in American Idol? Not Jason Castro. This singer-songwriter is

not only singing loveable songs for us, but also lending his gifts to those needing help, care and love.

“Born Again”, the latest single of the Christian band newsboys, is topping the charts, with the band

taking the road in big music festivals. The current interest on newsboys allowed them to be featured in such

magazines as Charisma, Billboard, Christian Retailing and are gracing

July 11 of pancreatic cancer at his

home in Ripon, Calif. An ordained

bishop in the Church of God in Christ denomination, he won a Grammy

Award in 1980 for his performance of "The Lord's Prayer." He made

recordings with artists as varied as Irish singer Van Morrison and Danish

harmonica player Lee Oskar, and his compositions were covered by

musicians including soul singer Aretha Franklin and American Idol

winner Ruben Studdard. Bishop Hawkins was a member of one of modern

gospel's leading families, which in the 1960s created a sound that reached

beyond church walls onto the radio and into secular concert venues. The

Hawkins family often performed in bellbottoms and loud colors, using

drums, guitars and unbridled emotion to kindle an interest in gospel music

among a wider audience, especially young people. Their single "Oh

Happy Day," an 18th-century hymn arranged by Bishop Hawkins' brother

Edwin, became the first gospel song to climb the mainstream charts and won Edwin a Grammy Award in 1970

for best soul gospel performance. In the early 1970s, Bishop Hawkins emerged from his brother's shadow to

found the Love Center Church in their home town, Oakland, California... TobyMac and fellow Christian artist

Chris Tomlin headline the 'Hello Tonight' tour. "We put together what people

would think are two sort of opposites," the former DC Talk member (real name

Kevin McKeehan), told Billboard.com about the bill, which pairs tobyMac's edgy,

contemporary hip-hop and pop mix with Tomlin, who he says is "essentially a

worship leader" -- not necessarily two styles that normally rub elbows on the

same stage. Nevertheless, tobyMac says, "I think it makes total sense. I think both

shows are very audience reactive...very crowd participatory. They're both shows

that engage the audience fully, whether they're jumping up and down or raising

their hands in worship. We're trying to make one plus one equal three. It's a

who is also the conductor of three other award-winning choirs, described their victory as ―overwhelming‖ as it

was their first competition in an international competition. The World Choir Games had 8,000 participants and

is held once every two years... Benedictine nuns from the Abbaye de Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation near

Avignon, Southern France had their prayers answered in July after beating 70 other religious orders

from North America and Africa to the deal with Universal Music. The sisters, whose album is set to be

released in November, will contain Gregorian chants. The sisters are not allowed to leave the convent or receive

guests and only communicate with visitors through a grill. The nuns join a label that includes the likes of Elton

John, The Rolling Stones and convent-educated chart topper Lady Gaga.

Patron Saint of Children, sailors, fishers, merchants, the falsely accused, prostitutes, repentant thieves, pharmacists, archers and pawnbrokers

Saint Nicholas is known to many as Santa Claus, the jolly bearded old man in bright-red suit. There are even those who are of the

belief that Christmas is the Feast of St Nicholas. It does not help that in some countries, Santa Claus parades are so elaborate that the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ is overshadowed.

If Saint Nicholas as Santa Claus is popular today, so was he during the early Christian church, as a priest, as a bishop, as a vessel of

Christ. But that’s getting ahead of the story of the real St Nic.

Born of Greek extraction during the third century in present-day Turkey, Nicholas was the only son of wealthy Christian parents who

died while he was young. His uncle also named Nicholas, the bishop of Patara, raised, as well as, mentored him as a reader and as a priest. In his younger days, he observed the canonical fasts of

Wednesdays and Fridays.

He was attributed to have saved three young girls from prostitution

by throwing a bag of gold into the window of the father’s house; these treasures were used as dowry for them to be married instead. He was said to have appeared during a storm as mariners who

invoked his aid off the coast of Lycia and brought them safely to port. He died on December 6, 310 resting in the cathedral in Myra. His name became more prominent in death, as many claimed to

have been healed as his venerable body ―exuded sweet smelling myrrh, which kept it from corruption‖ and there are many who

believe that the ―manna of St Nicholas‖ continues to flow to this day.

Many churches during the Middle Ages were named after St

Nicholas including more than 400 in England and he was acknowledged as patron saint of Russia. During the Protestant reformation movement and other changes in the church, interest in

St Nicholas waned, but not in Holland where the feast of Saint Nicholas was preserved in its ancient Catholic form, and small Dutch children still waited for the visit of the saint of the children,

Sinter Klaas (Saint Nicholas) on the night of December 6.

Dutch people who migrated to the United States in 1664 continued

to observe the custom in New Amsterdam (present-day New York). The feast of giving was embraced by the migrant nation, renaming Sinter Klaas to Santa Claus.

While there is no harm for people to relate St Nicholas to Christmas which is the season for giving and for children, it important to remember his life of courage, reverence and sacrifice. If he were

alive today, St Nicholas would be glad of the philanthropic spirit that prevails during Christmas, but certainly, he would be telling us

that the yuletide season is not about him, rather it is to commemorate the birth of the reason for all his sacrifices, for all his life – Jesus Christ.

Ten Ways to Make Christmas Meaningful

Many people look forward to Christmas for different reasons. For some, it is a break from work, while

others find extra work with the increased business activities. For some, it is a time to play Santa Claus, while others expect gifts to come their way. For some, it is having fun, while others spend time to pray.

Whatever way we spend Christmas, it is important that we put the first six letters of the word Christmas on top of everything we do. All the rejoicing, gift-giving and partying will be meaningless if we forget about the birth of Christ who brought hope and salvation to us, God’s children.

To make Christmas meaningful, here are ten things to do:

1. Wish everyone a “Merry Christmas”. There is magical warmth to a Christmas greeting. It brings about a smile, a hug or even a kiss. Though you may not know it, you are actually evangelising – sharing

thewonderful story of the King of Kings who was born in a manger. 2. Attend Christmas church services. To honour Jesus, we must attend masses where His presence is in the bread and the wine, His Body and His Blood. The mass is the highest form of celebration for faith

believers. 3. Give affordable gifts to loved ones. The essence of Christmas is that of giving, for such was the reason for His being born on earth. He was so giving that He died for you and me.

4. Display the manger scene at home. Forget about Christmas trees, lanterns and Santa Claus. If there is a perfect reminder about the birth of Christ, then it is the Nativity scene that shows us of His humility

and sacrifices. 5. Read the Bible and see a Christmas movie. By reading the Holy Book, one is able to strengthen the cord that binds us to our Creator. By reflecting on God’s Word, one can gain deeper insight on the love of

the Lord to His people. There are many wonderful films that carry the message of hope, peace and love; most importantly the Nativity movie. These kinds of flicks seen together with family can bring about respect, closeness and understanding.

6. Give a stranger or a new migrant a treat. It is human to give to those whom we know and care for. It is divine to share what you have to others, especially the needy and the helpless. Joseph and Mary were

migrants and strangers in Bethlehem and nobody opened their doors to give them shelter. If we open our hearts to strangers and migrants, we will have given shelter to Joseph, Mary and Jesus. 7. Sing a birthday song to Jesus and Christmas carols to believers and unbelievers. When Christ

was born the angels sang ―Gloria in excelsis Deo‖ that resonated in Heaven, Earth and even in Hell. Acclaiming Jesus through songs will certainly fill the void in the world. The power of a song can penetrate hearts of stone and disarm Satan and his minions.

8. Volunteer in a Christmas event. The shepherds and the Three Wise Men visited and adored the Child Jesus. They did not demand anything in return, for they came with love and awe. There are many

events organised where you can be of help. Lend a hand and you will experience immense joy and inner peace. 9. Cook your best dish and share it with others. If Jesus was your guest what would you cook for

Him? Surely, you will cook that you know best and have been complimented many times in the past. You would want Jesus to taste and savour your dish. Wouldn’t you be delighted if He says thank you and asks you for the recipe? In the physical absence of Christ, every other person represents Him; thus feeding

others is actualising your finest cooking for Christ. 10. Join Open Gathering (or similar activities). What great experience it would be, if you joined Open

Gathering (OG) where people party-to give, share and care. An OG will have artists sharing their talents,

those who have more giving gifts to strangers, and everyone bringing food for a feast. While OG happens

in Auckland on the Sunday prior to Christmas Day, it can definitely happen anywhere so long as there are

people who want to make Christmas meaningful for themselves and for others. OG can best be described

in Washington Irving’s quote: ―Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the

genial flame of charity in the heart.‖

Q: Is there need for a warm-up prior to doing a fitness programme?

A: Yes, before any workout, it is important to warm up and stretch the muscles.

A participant can then perform better and do a wider range of movements. Also,

doing warm ups can prevent sudden overstretching or any form of muscle strain.

Q: Can one do the Zumba fitness alone without an instructor?

A: Yes, there are Zumba DVDs available in the market. One can also use any

latin or dance songs and use the basic dance steps of the dances if one knows it.

Q: Are there advantages of doing the programme with others?

A: Going to a live class is of course much better than doing in at home by

yourself. Why? I would say that more is always merrier. In a live class, you can feel the other

people’s energy and see how well they perform or how happy they are when they dance. This could

give you a challenge to perform at a higher level. Going to a live Zumba class could also allow you to

make new great friends.

Q: What is the ideal number of hours per week to have good results in the programme?

A: Exercise is essential for better health and fitness. It is recommended that exercise should be done at

least 15 minutes a day. Zumba live classes run for about an hour. Doing it twice or three times a week

is what I would recommend.

Q: What do you find most satisfying in being a Zumba instructor?

A: Teaching Zumba classes is something I look forward to each week. It is a time to meet people and

have fun together. It also allows me to keep myself fit, considering that my regular work job is

physically and mentally demanding. (Jam works as a nurse in Plunket NewZealand – editor)

Interestingly it has opened doors for me to pursue my love for dancing. Like I’ve been asked to

conceptualise and lead a group of dancers in the Auckland International Carnival.

Three Trees

Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods.

They were discussing their hopes and dreams when

the first tree said, "Someday I hope to be a treasure

chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious

gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and

everyone would see the beauty." Then the second tree

said, "Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take

kings and queens across the waters and sail to the

corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me

because of the strength of my hull."

Finally the third tree said, "I want to grow to be the

tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see

me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and

think of the heavens and God and how close to them I

am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and

people will always remember me."

After a few years of praying that their dreams would

come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees.

When one came to the first tree he said, "This looks

like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter" ... and he began cutting it down. The

tree was happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest. At the second tree a

woodsman said, "This looks like a strong tree, I should be able to sell it to the shipyard." The second tree was

happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship.

When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him

down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, "I don't need anything special from my tree

so I'll take this one", and he cut it down.

When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a

barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for. The second tree was cut and made into a

small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end. The third tree was

cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark. The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams.

Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the

feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this

manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest

treasure of all time. Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them

was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn't think it was

strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and he stood and said "Peace" and the

storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat.

Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man

who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the

top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill

and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it.

The moral of this story is that when things don't seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan

for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just

not in the way they had imagined. We don't always know what God's plans are for us. We just know that His

Pianist: That’s not the way to sing this song!

Ben: Oh. Why is that?

Pianist: Because it should be sang this way (sings)

Ben: Oh, this song is my composition.

Hide No More

Jay and Dee, tots play hide and seek in church. After a

while from hiding, Jay returns to Dee and shakes his

hands.

Jay: A strange thing happened to me as I hid from you.

Dee: What?

Jay: I went to this little room, and as soon as I was

there, a strange voice asked me what I wanted. So I said, I am hiding from you.

Dee: What did he tell you?

Jay: That I need not hide anymore for I am forgiven and that I should make peace with you.

Dee: He, he...you were in the confessional box.

Kara DioGuardi left American Idol because she had become

aggressive. Ellen DeGeneres left American Idol because she doesn’t

really know much about music.

Seagull: Don’t believe that the Gulf of Mexico is safe from the BP

oil spill?

Pelican: The papers said that it’s all clear.

Seagull: I don’t think so. When the American president and her

A member is one who can attend to the regular activities of the Ministry. The minimum participation are: attendance during practice sessions of songs, usually once a week or once every two weeks AND singing with the group during the assigned mass usually once a month or once every two months

A supporter is one who can donate services or resources to the Ministry. There are special events that TawagAwit organizes and the events need finances or helping hands.

An organizer is one who initiates the formation of a chapter in a parish. The Ministry will provide all the assistance within its means to help in the vital task.

It follows the NOTES songwriting process conceptualised by Bro Mel B Libre, songwriter-performer & Lead Servant of TawagAwit, with participants, with or without music background, making original materials inspired by Biblical passages and performing these at the end of the session. Most of the outputs in the Songwriting Wor(k)ship have been sang during masses in parishes where the composers are members of the choir or music group.
