From the Editor:

Classical music has always been highbrow, elitist and complex. When one thinks of

classical music, one tends to associate this with the opera house, where the rich

and the intellectuals dress themselves to the toes to fill their minds with music

played by the trained, if not the gifted.

To bring classical music to the masses, to ordinary people is more like a short-

lived work of charity, rather than a long-term cultivation into the grassroots

culture. Antonio Abreu worked to defy the odds; not only did he make classical

music accessible to the poor-and-middle income families, he trained those who

loved to play music and even produced some of the finest classical musicians of

the world today.

In a way, it is similar to the Good News that Jesus Christ brought to Israel. There

were those who claimed themselves to be God’s Chosen People, denying outsiders

the faith that they practiced. But Jesus taught not only the Jews, but also the

pagans, unbelievers, foreigners, outcasts and the sinners. It was not easy: Jesus

was crucified for propagating His teachings, as did St Peter and St Paul, and many

others became martyrs. And that remains true today.

But the good work one does cannot be contained. It will grow, for it is planted in

good soil, with good intention. The work of Antonio Abreu is an example whose

mission continues to flourish not just in his country, Venezuela, but also in other

countries in the world.

This issue not only recognizes Antonio Abreu but also other men and women who

have dedicated their lives to do work for the betterment of humanity.

Love Peace and Harmony,

Bro Mel B Libre

ANTONIO ABREU Classical Music for the Masses

Pop music consists of commercial recordings of songs that appeal to a wide spectrum of people

regardless of sex, religion, race or persuasion in short it is music for the masses. The

compositions are short (usually 4-6 minutes) and repetitive. Pop music is more associated with

the youth market, and often aired on radio, television and other similar media.

Classical music on the other hand has a more formal structure based on traditions of Western

liturgical and secular music dating back to the 16th century. It is complex, lengthy and

performed by trained musicians. Classical music is perceived as elitist, exclusive and

cosmopolitan.

It therefore takes a stretch of imagination and a herculean task to bring classical music to the masses,

not only for them to hear and appreciate, but more importantly for the youth to perform.

Antonio Abreu was a dreamer: he loved classical music, he played classical music, and he wanted to

bring the masterpieces of Chopin, Beethoven and others to the grassroots in his native land

Venezuela. His mission was beyond aesthetic, it was holistic. He said, ―Music has to be recognized as

an agent of social development in the highest sense, because it transmits the highest values –

solidarity, harmony, mutual compassion. And it has the ability to unite an entire community and to

express sublime feelings.‖ A lofty dream. Realizable? Many doubted, but not Abreu.

Page 12: CORD October 2011

CORD Vol 2 No. 2 October 2011 Page 12

Page 13: CORD October 2011

CORD Vol 2 No. 2 October 2011 Page 13

From 1975 until the present, Abreu through El Sistema, a music network, has organized 102 youth

orchestras, 55 children’s orchestras and 270 music centers. What is even more amazing is that Abreu

pursued his dream in a constantly changing political environment (10 administrations). The maestro’s

program has trained 250,000 young musicians, and has become the model of similar pursuits in other

countries including the United States and United Kingdom.

The concept behind Abreu’s work is simple: an orchestra is first and foremost about togetherness, a

place where children learn to listen to each other and to respect one another. He believes that music is

a potent force that can transform society.

In the slums of Venezuela, El Sistema has brought youths away from drugs and crime. Moreover, El

Sistema has become one of the sources of national pride to the country, having brought the world such

talents such Gustavo Dudamel, conductor of the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra and the double bass

player Edicson Ruiz, who at the age of 17 became the youngest musician ever to join the Berlin

Philharmonic.

But other than developing talent and character, El Sistema has workshops in which children learn to

build and repair instruments, special programmes for children with disabilities or learning difficulties,

and specialist centres or institutes for phonology, audiovisuals and higher musical education.

The success of El Sistema is also reflected in the personal achievements of Abreu. In his younger

days, he studied piano in the Caracas Musical Declamation Academy in 1957, and received the

Symphonic Music National Prize for his talent in 1967. But Abreu did not limit his learning to music,

he took a degree in Economics where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and later earned a PhD

degree. He became a politician that reached its summit in 1983 when he served as Minister of

Culture. He was also an educator, having worked as a professor of economics and law in Universidad

Simon Bolivar and his alma mater, Universidad Catolico Andres Bello.

He may not have received any Grammy Award, but Abreu has countless awards that outshine a

Grammy trophy to mention some: Right Livelihood Award (2001); World Culture Open Creative

Page 14: CORD October 2011

CORD Vol 2 No. 2 October 2011 Page 14

Arts Award (2004); Order of the Rising Sun, Grand Cordon (Japan, 2007); the Glenn Gould Prize

(Canada, 2008); the Puccini International Prize (Italy, 2008); the Q Prize with former student and

protégé Gustavo Dudamel (USA, 2008); the Crystal Award of the World Economic Forum (2009); the

TED Prize (2009); Polar Music Prize (2009) given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music; and

Erasmus Prize (2010).

But even sans all those awards and accolades, Antonio Abreu’s greatest achievement is having

brought hope and joy to countless people, especially vulnerable children. In the man’s own words, he

explained: "The majority of the children and juveniles belong to the groups that are most vulnerable

and excluded in all of Venezuelan society. Participating in the orchestral movement has made it

possible for them to set up new goals, plans, projects and dreams, and at the same time it is a way of

creating meaning and helping them in their day-to-day struggle for better conditions of life through

the variety of opportunities that the orchestral movement offers them."

What else does he wish to achieve? He told one writer, ―I wish you would help create and document

a special training program for at least 50 gifted young musicians, passionate for their art and for social

justice, and dedicated to developing El Sistema in the US and in other countries.‖ That speaks well

about Abreu, for it’s not about him, it’s about the children. (CORD)

Pamela Wildheart is a songwriter, recording artist and former radio personality for English programmes and

Japanese radio in Singapore. A Filipina based in Singapore, she also conducts academic lectures for Australian

Universities in Singapore like Curtin Australia, RMIT, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University and others

in media, public relations, advertising, strategic branding, marketing, radio and TV production. “Flowers” is

her 2nd album, after her release of Wild & Wicked the debut album.

CORD: Why Flowers?

PWH: Flowers is simply put- a plethora of flowers, branches weeds and green all in an album. The

songs are all connected by seedlings, buds, branches, petals and all. I feel that life is synonymous to

flowers. It experiences the rain and sunshine, the wind and gust, typhoons and storms, yet it endures

as it dies and blossoms again.

Page 18: CORD October 2011

CORD Vol 2 No. 2 October 2011 Page 18

CORD: Tell us about the songs in this album

PWH: ―Flowers‖ is a love song it’s about the usual stuff, with a twist! It’s about men who don’t come

on time when setting a date with ladies. So this girl had enough of it and sings this song called

flowers. ―I don’t want flowers, I don’t want flowers, I don’t want flowers, I just want you.‖ ―Green‖ is

a song about how we tell lies, promises and pledges to save the earth, but with a motive to gain glory

and fame for a page in history. ―Inay, Itay‖ is about my parents. It’s heart wrenching and to those who

heard it raw - they cried while listening to this song. ―Hard-hearted Shadow of The Man I used to

Know‖ is about the vicious change in the man you once knew. Life changes, so do relationships.

Someone you love may change his demeanor in a way that is hard to relate to. Other tracks include

the upbeat and ―feel good‖ rhythm of ―Raindance‖, ―Gumamela‖, poignant and very romantic,

echoing the ultimate bond between men and women when love erupts.

CORD: Who did you collaborate with in this

album?

PWH: I worked with Moliano, a Singaporean

artist highly respected for his quality guitars,

music production and musical acumen. I feel a

great ―meeting of the ears‖ when working with

Moliano in the studio. He understands exactly

the language of my music. I write to express my

thoughts and ask questions about my feelings. I

need a music producer who does not change

much of my music rather interpret my emotions

and engages his talents to put them to life with

his artistry. I find this a great musical explosion.

Working with Moliano has taught me so

much…humility, commitment, passion,

discipline…he has plenty of these. He works on schedule and immerses himself into my music.

CORD: What do you find challenging in this project?

PWH: Being an independent artist is challenging but it gives me a raw edge. I have a major influence

in my own music selection after all they are all ―my‖ songs literally. Funding music is an expensive

process. I’ve saved hard to ensure that I can take control of my own music. I want my music to be

truly untainted with unnatural influence. At this stage, I can say, I may be inspired by other artists, but

most of my materials reflect my thoughts and musicality. However, producing self-penned music is

not an easy task. It’s not instantaneous success, it’s practically peddling your songs to radio stations,

which may not have room for independent artists. Singapore is not easy to penetrate. Even local artists

are struggling to promote their own music. Many go to Taiwan or Hongkong to promote their songs.

CORD: What is your motivation in this album?

PWH: I am not writing music to be a star; rather I want to be remembered as an artist. I am not

writing music with record sales in mind solely, but seriously for one bid of selfishness—to express my

soul. This to me is—to die for!

CORD BEST 5:

Woodstock is synonymous with “three days of music and peace”. From August 15-

18, 1969 in the muddy field of a remote town off New York, artists from a wide

spectrum of music styles expressed the message of the generation for peace to

humanity. The anthem, “Woodstock” was composed by Joni Mitchell who chose

the most harmonic and the genuine super group of that era – Crosby Stills Nash &

Young.

CORD in this issue went through the long list of classic anthems from CSN&Y – and

I Believe

Speech delivered by Bro Denis Tutaka during the Teachers in Sandals Fellowship

Teaching Night

To believe in something is a journey. It is a search; a journey to the unknown; a journey of faith. I

cannot have faith without knowing what to believe in. I must believe in something. I have to admit; I

believe in so many things. I believe in obvious things. For example, I believe that the roof on top of

my head right now is strong enough and won’t fall on me at this very moment. I believe in scientific

things. For example that the earth is round; even-though I haven’t been into space to check it out

myself. Then, there are the complicated things. I believe in Aliens and Santa Claus. However, there is

something that transforms us. This will be my main focus tonight. I believe in God. This is the

ultimate believe on top of all other beliefs I may have.

But why? Why believe in God? Let me start with a story.

One day a Catholic priest decided to look for the best location to search GOD. He decided he would

go to the Holy Land since it is where Jesus, God’s Son grew up. He prayed but could not find GOD in

his heart. Then, he decided he would go to Rome since it is where the Apostles Peter and Paul died.

He went, prayed but still could not find GOD. He then decided, perhaps in the wrong religion? He

went to Mecca (where Muslim originated) and to Nepal (where Buddhism originated) but still could

not find GOD. Frustrated, he returned home but on his way met an old man and told him his story.

With surprise the old man told him not to worry for he’ll give him a solution to his problem and

invited the poor priest to his house. Excited, the Catholic priest followed the old man with no more

exchange of words. As they walked for hours in silence and came to a small cottage next to a river.

Again without talking, the old man went for a bathe in the river. Frustrated, the priest walked over to

the old man demanding for the answer. As the priest came close to the old man, the man grabbed the

priests head and plunged it into the water. The priest struggled and tried to escape the old man’s hands

but couldn’t. The struggle lasted for about 10seconds and the old man released the priest. Furious, the

priest swore at the old man every swear word he can think of. Calmly, the old man said. Why are you

upset? Why did you struggle in the water? Are you insane – replied the priest! I was looking for air to

breathe! The man replied… and so was God looking for you!

The moral of the story is that the more we search for God, the more we find ourselves lost with only

one thing to save us: God’s search for us. Our starting point must be our faith in this Magnificent

Being; this Creator; this Almighty One; this friend of ours, GOD! Although so many distractions of

this world make us drift from God, I have managed to go pass it and develop a relationship no words

could truly explain. I pity those who find it hard to believe in God’s existence. I can only find one

explanation to why many doubt God and that is experience in God. When one experiences what is of

God, one will then realize that there is something greater than ones thought. The fact that I believe in

God makes me vulnerable to share with Him my life-story. We are almost one with one another.

St Augustine once said, ―You created me for you O God and my heart is restless until it rests in you.‖

SONNET By William Shakespeare

Music to hear, why hear'st thou music sadly? Sweets with sweets war not, joy delights in joy: Why lov'st thou that which thou receiv'st not gladly, Or else receiv'st with pleasure thine annoy? If the true concord of well-tuned sounds, By unions married, do offend thine ear, They do but sweetly chide thee, who confounds In singleness the parts that thou shouldst bear. Mark how one string, sweet husband to another, Strikes each in each by mutual ordering; Resembling sire and child and happy mother, Who, all in one, one pleasing note do sing: Whose speechless song being many, seeming one, Sings this to thee: 'Thou single wilt prove none.'

Sometimes so forceful with might

Makes daddy uptight

"One, two, three," no way

But "Beautiful Trysse" you say

Smiles flow ceaselessly

Splish, splash here I come.

Bathing me's my doting mom.

I love it, I am.

Bored, mom wheeled me out

Windy, my face was blown out

Hungry, I cried out

They tell me I'm cute.

"You look like your daddy, dude"!

Thought he's like a newt..

Toys they are a lot

Colourful, look what I've got

Bored, sure I am not

Bald is beautiful.

My fave is to suck

Everything I hold I smack

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz Feast Day: September 28

Patron Saint: Filipino youth, Chinese-

Filipinos, the Philippines, Overseas Filipino

Workers, people living in poverty, Filipino

altar servers

Lorenzo Ruiz was born in Binondo,

Manila between 1600 and 1610. Lorenzo

had a Chinese father and a Filipino

mother.

During his youth, he learned Spanish from the

Dominicans, whom he served as altar boy and

sacristan. He was exceptionally gifted with

beautiful penmanship and became a

professional calligrapher.. Lorenzo was also a

member of the Confraternity of the Holy

Rosary which was organized by the

Dominicans in the Philippines as soon as they

arrived in 1587.

In 1636, a grave crime was committed in

Manila, authorities conducted a manhunt for

Lorenzo because they believed he knew

something about it or was involved in it.

When Lorenzo learned of some missionary

priests leaving Manila, thinking that they were

going to Macau, he sought help from his

Dominican superiors who believed in his

innocence, he was allowed aboard the ship,

along with three Dominican priests. Only

when they were on the ship did Lorenzo learn

that the missionaries were headed for Japan,

where Catholics were suffering terrible

persecutions at that time. When the boat

landed at Okinawa, the group was arrested and

imprisoned on basis of their Christian religion.

They were brought to Nagasaki on July 10,

1636 and subjected to torture by the Japanese

captors for more than a year. They were

tortured through hanging by their feet, by

submerging in water until near death and by

water torture. Needles were also pressed in

between their finger nails and skin and they

were beaten until unconscious.

Lorenzo went through this agonizing

punishments when he refused to renounce his

faith. He was told that he would be put to

death if he did not renounce his faith, Lorenzo

Ruiz told them, "I will never do it. I am a

Catholic and happy to die for God. If I have a

thousand lives to offer, I will offer them to

God."

It was on September 23, 1637 that he began to

undergo "hanging in the pit." After two days

he died from bleeding and suffocation. His

body was cremated and the ashes thrown into

the sea.

According to the documents cited to proclaim

him "Blessed," his parents were devout

Catholics. He was christened "Lorenzo" after a

martyr during the 3rd century persecution of

Christians. His surname "Ruiz" was taken

from the last name of his godfather.

Lorenzo Ruiz was beatified by Pope John Paul

II during the Papal visit in Manila on February

18, 1981 at Luneta Park . He was canonized on

October 18, 1987 in Rome. Lorenzo Ruiz's

feast day falls on September 28. (MM del

Rock „n‟ Roll‟s Hellraiser

The famous screen pirate, Jack Sparrow,

owes much of its character not from actor

Johnny Depp but from the mannerism of

Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards

(who played Sparrow’s father Captain

Teague) who is described as a ―reluctant

outlaw, rock 'n' roll's unparalleled

hellraiser, and one of the greatest guitar

gods of all time.‖

Richards has published his biography,

―Life‖, about his boyhood to his becoming

among the active elderly rock musicians of

all time (at 66). The no-holds bar memoir

is one not worth reading, for as reviews

have it – it details his hedonistic past and

broken marriages; his drug habit and ―wise

advice‖ on drug use; his encounters with

the law; his tumultuous relations with

Rolling Stone’s singer Mick Jagger; his

music; -- and his twisted philosophies like

―I've never had a problem with drugs. I've

had problems with the police.‖

Because of his notoriety as a drug user, he

was for a decade on the ―People Most

Likely to Die List‖, to which he said,

"Well, I'm not putting death on the agenda,

I don't want to see my old friend Lucifer

just yet." In 2007, Richards fell from a tree

in Fiji, and people thought he was a goner.

He came out fine, after a complex surgical

operation in New Zealand.

He may have escaped imprisonment, he

may have escaped death, but not for long.

“As righteousness tendeth to life: so he

that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own

death.” (Proverbs 11:19) And Richards

seems to know where he stands in the eyes

of God, as he declared, 'I'm probably more

aligned to Lucifer and the dark side'.

If he thinks Lucifer is a joke, he must

come to realize that the eternal company

with the devil is no laughing matter. “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all

the nations that forget God.” (Psalm 9:17)

Our life on earth is but a speck in the

boundless territory of the hereafter.

Read this Keith Richards: “Be sober, be

vigilant; because your adversary the devil,

as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking

whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

There is still hope. “For the Son of man is

come to save that which was lost.”

(Matthew 18:11)

Richards had joked that he would like his

epitaph to be: "I told you I was sick". He

could still have this changed to ―I was

healed‖, if and only if he embraces Jesus

as Our Lord and Savior – now.

The Fish Who Wanted to Fly*

He was different. The creatures of Dagat thought so. He had a

slim body, yet had long fins at both sides. And when he swam,

he lacked the grace and swiftness of most other fishes. Nobody

wanted to be seen with him, afraid to suffer the same fate of

being mocked and ridiculed.

So he stayed away from them. He would go to the highest part

of the sea where there was no water, but only air and sky. He often, looked up and saw birds flying,

gliding in the space where there was no sea. The birds, oftentimes, would swoop down in the water

and catch fishes for their food. He would just hide behind rocks and corrals – admiring the dreadful

winged creatures. He, then, realized that he wanted to be like the birds – he wanted to fly. When he

told this to other fishes, they called him a fool.

One day, the fish who wanted to fly saw a half-conscious young bird floating in the water. It had a

broken wing and could not fly. Its body had grown heavy with water. The bird was drowning. With

the aid of the waves and the wind, the fish who wanted to fly pushed the bird towards the shore. For

some time, the bird did not move as its body lay wet on the shore. Fish who wanted to fly stayed on

for some time until the bird moved. The bird was alive.

Fish called out bird and asked how he was. The bird, a seagull, said that he was fine, but could not fly

for he had broken one of his wings. For many days, fish and seagull were together and they became

the best of friends. Fish told seagull that he had always dreamed of flying. Seagull replied that he had

never seen a fish fly, but as a friend he was more than willing to help fish fulfil his dream.

Seagull noticed that fish had long fins. ―Imagine that your fins are wings. Flap them like this,: advised

seagull as he flapped his wings for fish to see.

As the wing of seagull continued to heal, fish religiously practiced his fins to be like wings. Yet, fish

could not fly. But still he persisted.

One day, while fish did his practice flying, a hungry kingfisher noticed him. Fish continued his

routine not knowing that kingfisher was moving towards him. Seagull, whose wing had healed, struck

kingfisher with his body to save his friend fish. But kingfisher was too strong. Seagull could only

shout, ―Fly, fish, fly!‖

Aware of the danger, fish flapped his fins will all his might,

moving high above the sea and into the air. Yes, fish was

flying! He was really flying. Kingfisher was about the catch

fish with his claws when he felt a strong body hit his side

causing him to fall into the sea. Seagull had struck kingfisher

who now floated helplessly in the sea.

Seagull called out his friend fish who had dived back into the

sea. Fish went up again and spread his fins. He went above the

sea and joined seagull. Two friends flying. Two friends loving.

Santa Claus

Santa Claus goes down the chimney. To his surprise, the

wife of the house owner was in the living room decorating

the Christmas tree. She turns around and sees Santa.

Wife (thinking it was her husband): Honey, you’ve dressed

so convincingly as Santa.

Santa: I’m sorry but I’m not your husband.

Wife: Don’t you kid me (and gives Santa one torrid kiss)

The husband then appears dressed as Santa.

Husband: What is this!

Santa: I just told your wife that she is the best gift you have

this Christmas – and she kissed me to say thank you. (Santa

rubs his nose and disappears)

It turned out to be the most romantic Christmas for the

couple. (Just don’t tell Mrs Claus about the hazards of the job being Santa)

*** Exchanging Gift

The day after Christmas, the parish priest was looking over

the manger scene when he noticed that the baby Jesus was

missing among the figures. He hurried outside and saw a

little boy with a red wagon and in the wagon was the figure

of the little infant Jesus. He ran after the boy and asked,

―Well, gentleman, where did you get your passenger?‖

The boy replied, ―I got him from the church, Father.‖

―And may I know why you took him?‖

Confidently he said, ―Well, during the midnight mass I

prayed to the little Lord Jesus that if he gave me a red

wagon for Christmas I would give him a ride around the

block in it.‖

Carols

The kids sing a Christmas carol in one house.

An old man comes out – and angrily hands out five cents.

Kids: Is this all?

Old man: That’s for disturbing my sleep.

Kids: Would you want to go back to sleep?

Old man: Of course!

Kids: Then you’ll have to give us more, or will sing more!

***

Snowman: One left out in the cold on Christmas

Christmas tree: Cut out for a special role during Christmas

Santa Claus: A generous gift-giving person (doesn’t have to be fat, old or in a red suit)

Scrooge: He doesn’t care about Christmas, thus, he needs our care.

Jam Parado, award winning choreographer based in Auckland, New Zealand

Q: You joined the Zumba video making competition?

A: Yes, I did, and I got a whole lot of people helping me out in the project

Q: What was this competition all about?

A: It was organized by Beto who is the founder of Zumba. It was intended to get Zumba instructors

throughout the world to shoot a video based on steps he created to the music of Pitbull’s ―Pause‖.

Q: What was the concept of your video?

A: It was about being caught in a traffic jam and you’d want to get away from boredom and do a

Zumba ―pause‖, so you get out of the car and dance in the middle of the street.

Q: Who participated in the shooting?

A: Everyone I knew who love to dance. My family, relatives, fellow dance instructors, Zumba

students and enthusiasts, a whole cultural dance troupe and even pedestrians who joined the fun.

Q: Where did you shoot the video?

A: I asked permission from the Auckland council, and we had two sites, one the community stage,

and the other was in a street that was closed purposely for the shooting.

Q: How did the video fare in the competition.

A: By the time we submitted the video it was just one week before the closing of the voting; but with

everyone helping out in the campaign to get votes, we obtained nearly 2,000 votes and ranked no. 3

overall. If the shooting and the dancing was challenging, the campaigning was even more

challenging. But it proved that if everyone just helps out, we can reach the top. Thanks to everyone –

and that means really EVERYONE, bow!

Q: What‟s the best feedback you received from the effort?

A: There were lots of encouragement and praises. But I’d like to share one coming from someone I

don’t really know – Frank Olsen, who wrote: ―This video is really worth watching. It has a great

concept, well thought of and well executed. The highlight of this video is the graceful and charming

Zumba instructress. She well represents Zumba. It's a real scenario - you get caught in a traffic and the

Zumba Pause is the great solution. The video features Zumba enthusiasts, ordinary families and a

cultural group - a good mix of participants. The wearing of the green, red and yellow colours shows

the creativity of the concept translating both the colours of the traffic light and the lyrics of the song.

The scenes and locations are varied, thus the video sustains the excitement of the viewer.‖
