Introduction

Everything old is new again. That’s what theysay—and it’s certainly true in the world of fash-

ion. Hemlines and necklines go up and down andthen back up again, colors fall out of favor only tobe rediscovered half a generation later, and thestyles that once filled our grandparents’ closets(and later, cedar chests and attic storage) are nowback out on the streets and “hip” again.

Vintage fashions have seen a strong resurgencein recent days. Hipsters have repopularized thebow tie and the floral-print dress. Felt cloches andpin-striped fedoras fill the hat sections of depart-ment stores. Thrift shops see “ugly Christmassweaters” flying off their shelves. We are rediscover-ing the playful fashions of the ‘20s, the cute practi-cality of the ‘50s, the bold colors of the ‘70s and‘80s.

On top of that, the contemporary desire to “gogreen”—to make sustainable choices that mini-mize our impact on our planet’s environment andreduce waste—plays into the popularity of vintagestyles. Why buy cheap new clothes when our atticsand second-hand shops are full of treasures? Orwhen we can make our own clothes and acces-sories, following in the footsteps of the women andmen who carefully hand-crafted these vintage gar-ments the first time around? Pouring time and ef-fort into creating a handmade hat, shawl, or bagadds value to the item and ensures that it will notfind its way into a landfill after just a few shortmonths.

This book gives you what you need to do justthat, with 23 classic patterns for hats, handbags, shawls, scarves, and other accessories, dating fromthe 1910s to the early 1960s. All the patterns havebeen carefully checked and edited where the origi-nal pattern was awkward or unclear, and the mate-rials lists have been updated with modern yarn andhook information. You get the classic styles of thepast without the hassle and guesswork of trying tointerpet a decades-old pattern.

Re-create these fashions of the past and cele-brate the old becoming new again!

VARIATION

With thick yarn and a tight gauge, as de-

scribed here, the bottom piece will be suffi-

ciently sturdy on its own. If you work with thinner

yarn or at a looser gauge, you may want to make a

second bottom piece for a sturdier bag. Work the

sides directly onto one of the bottoms, as in-

structed here, and sew the other one onto it after

the bag is finished. For even more stability, you can

slide a piece of cardboard in between the two bot-

toms before you sew them together.

Edging Round: Ch 1, *work [sc, 2 dc] in next ch-sp,sc in next ch-sp; rep from * around; join with a slst in beg ch. Fasten off.

FINISHINGWeave in ends.Cut 4 pieces of yarn about 80 in. (200 cm) long.

Twist them together tightly, then double thetwist back on itself to make a twisted cord. Tieeach end firmly about an inch from the end andcut the folded end so that each end has a smalltassel after the knot. Repeat to make a secondtwisted cord.

Thread one cord through the eyelet round and tiethe ends of the cord together. Starting at theopposite side of the bag, thread the other cordthrough the same round, going under thestitches the first cord went over, and vice versa;tie the ends of the cord together.
