New murals adorn both Coobowie and Edithburgh. Both have recently been unveiled. One at the Coobowie Information Kiosk (above) and the other at the Edithburgh Swimming Pool (below).
The artist for the mural is Nicholas S Watson
The mural was commissioned by the Coobowie Progress Association
Additional photos of the impressive mural at the
Edithburgh Tidal Pool by resident town artist
Darryl Lewis.
If you haven’t seen it , you really should. Its dimensions exclude a single photo doing
any sort of justice to either the artist’s talent or the magnitude
of the work.
The mural adds another dimension to the surrounding of the pool. It adds another aspect for anyone at the pool or using the BBQ area.
The artist has immortalised many of the sea birds and beasts which can normally be found in the vicinity of the pool.
The mural was commissioned by the Edithburgh Progress Association.

A new resident of Coobowie, Captain Malcolm Lowe, has put together A Few Yarns and Verses of Captain Croweater 'The Mouth from the South’. This compilation is a celebration of his 45 years on River Murray boats. He dedicates this collection to the old river-men of the past, and reflects. “No doubt like all of these characters, it will be soon be my turn to go ‘paddling up-stream’ to join their numbers. Here are two excerpts.
CATCHING CROWS
A missing deck hand eventually returned to work on the “Oscar W” after being absent for two weeks, and the captain asked for a reasonable explanation. “I’ve been in the lockup Boss”, he reported. “I got caught playin’ two-up down in the lignum bushes in the river flats near Kataraptko Creek.”
“Ya should ‘a been orright there,” said the engineer. “I’ve never heard of the cops raidin’ that game.” “It’s the new bloke from Loxton tryin’ to make a name for ‘imself,” replied the deck hand, “and the blighter hasn’t got a sense of humour either. When he caught us, he asked what we were doin’ and thinkin’. I was bein smart, told ‘im that we was throwin’ pennies up in the air to attract crows, an’ we catch ‘em an’ wring their necks to stop ‘em getting stuck into the new lambs.”
“Didn’t he believe ya?” said the cook listening to the story. “That’s the main problem,” replied the decky, “the others all got off with a fine of a few bob, and I was lumbered with two weeks in the lock-up for hunting crows without a license.”
I WONDER
As we move into life’s later days, I wonder what’s in store. Does any-one ever contemplate the final closing of life’s door? How much longer do we have, to enjoy the life we live? To contemplate the path that is set for us. To offer all that we can give.
Have I been a worth-while neighbour, loving parent and honest man? Have I dealt with people decently, and where-e’re I can? Have I forgiven who offended me and have not born a grudge? Has my honour been my foremost thought, does my reputation wear a smudge?
Can I go ahead now peacefully, into the evening of my life, With loving friends and family and fond memories of a loving wife? Only God and my own conscience can answer these questions best And the answers will never be published as I go on through this life’s test.
But hopefully I have earned the right, to live my last years through, With comfort, health and happiness, with my family and friends - love too.
Capt. Malcolm Lowe

"CORNISH PASTIES"
INGREDIENTS:- 2 pkts frozen puff pastry, 1 kg lean beef steak or lamb chop meat off the bone, 4 potatoes, 1 turnip, 1 swede, 2 carrots, 2 onions, 400g peeled pumpkin, salt & pepper, 1 egg.
METHOD:- Chop the steak the hand fairly finely, but not in a blender, that's too fine. Peeled and finely chop vegetables, mix all together with good amount of salt and pepper, please don't skimp on this. Defrost your pastry fully. Grab a side plate and trace out a circle with a knife on the pastry, about 6". Pop a good handful of mixed meat and veg into the centre of pastry, move it along the length, leaving a 1/2" border, brush with beaten egg, and fold pastry over, now you can either crimp it between thumbs or use a fork and press edges together, repeat till it's been used up. Don't to mix pastry scraps together and re-roll to use again for more pasties. Pop all pasties on a tray lined with baking paper, on bake in a pre-heated oven on 190º, these pasties can be frozen once cooked or cooled, if you choose.
These are the pasties of my youth, my mum was a brilliant cook, who could take a pound of mince, and feed seven people easily. Thanks mum for you love and knowledge. Happy noshing folks.

On Thursday 15th. February 2018 Friends of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra travelled to the Telecentre at Yorketown to present the Orchestra in virtual reality.
Throughout the day, six groups, six people at a time, were able to don headphones and goggles and through this technology experience live performances of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Although not perfect in clarity of picture , the sound was , and we were able to enjoy being "IN" the Adelaide Town Hall amongst the orchestra to which we could hone in on various players and their instruments as they were playing under the guidance of the conductor.
Edithburgh people who enjoyed this experience were Kath and Neil Haddow, Beth Braund , Kath Dawes , Wendy and Bob Gripton.
The mind boggles at what technology can and will continue to do

"AWESOME FUN WITH FISHING"
I've had a question in from a lad, who says in your first issue Nuggett, you were talking about a running knot, but I don't know how to do it. On thinking about it, maybe I didn't explain it very well, so I'm going to draw how to do it. It doesn't last forever, and should always be tested every time you go fishing.
first thread your bobby cork on the line of your fishing rod, and pop a small swivel on with a tight knot.
now it's just a question of attaching your tommie line as shown drawn here, make your berley, and lets go fishing, tight lines and safe fishing guys
next pull about 8ft of line out, this is where we'll tie the running knot. Cut an extra piece of different coloured line about 9" long. Go round your main line twice with this, and tie up tightly, tie up again, and trim the ends, now you should be able to slide this knot up and down, which means you can fish deeper or shallower with a bobby cork.
Where am I?
The wind only blows gently where I am
There is an atmosphere of peace
The rising sun casts tartan shadows all about.
There is the rich smell of dew on the leaves
The summer blossoms fill the air with their fragrance
The bees are buzzing
Many and varied birds are ridiculously noisy
Where am I?

Little Grassbird The Little Grassbird has been on Troubridge Island for some years. Its plaintive call or cry may be heard close to the Lighthouse Cottages, but the Little Grassbird can be very hard to find as it remains in cover most of the time. It can be very secretive and frustrating if one wants to observe it, let alone try and photograph it. In December 2017, we stayed on Troubridge Island and in the early morning the call of the Little Grassbird was easily heard. Venturing out before 06.00 with my camera, intent on searching for the Little Grassbird, but standing still wondering which direction to take as two birds were calling. On turning round slowly, there was one in the dense bush beside me. The photos show it did completely emerge – few photos were taken as the bird moved rapidly through the bush before moving deep under cover.
The second and third birds in the other direction were only slightly more helpful to the photographer. The juvenile could easily be mistaken for a sparrow.
Size ~14cm
Adult Little Grassbird just before moving deeper into the bushes and a fledgeling

Dr. Cyrus Mills is a veterinary pathologist and not particularly good with live animals or people. When his estranged father dies, Cyrus returns to rural Vermont to inherit the veterinary practice, ‘the Bedside Manor for Sick Animals’. He intends to sell up and get out of his childhood home as fast as possible. This is a cute and easy to read story of Cyrus’ journey to get to know and love the quirky townsfolk and their pets, to learn to understand his father and to fall in love. This is Nick Trouts first work of fiction. He is a vet and his love of animals shines through his writing. This is a light, entertaining story about forgiving the past and finding happiness where you least expect it.
What a read! I was compelled to read Dana James’s 'Doctor in New Guinea' in almost one sitting. The protagonist, Doctor Maren Harvey, has travelled from London to do research on a field trip for the vaccine for a tropical disease in the Papua New Guinea highlands. She is expecting to be accompanied by her old friend Brent, but he cancels at the last minute, and this leads to an exciting story of dislike that borders on hate as she discovers that perhaps she’s not as tough and self reliant as she thinks she is. The narrative describes life in the highlands with its own distinctive atmosphere and scenic grandeur. If you like this read she has written 21 other titles for you to choose from; she is best known for 'Snowfire'.
