Tirol is what you hear...and vacation is what
comes to mind? Hardly. The greater part of
Tirol’s gross domestic product comes from
manufacturing material goods, followed
by business-associated services. Tyrolean
companies annually export goods to a tune
of more than ten billion euros, their export
growth rate lies well above Austrian averages.
Tyrolean industry exports three quarters of
its products and attains the second highest
ratio among all Austria’s federal states. World
market leaders such as Swarovski, Egger
Spanplattenwerke, Plansee, Sandoz, Tyrolit
and Med-El are exemplary companies,
known and respected far beyond the borders
of Tirol.
Robust growth
Following the economic meltdown in
2008/2009 Tirol swiftly returned to the path
of growth. In 2011 its economy grew by 2.9
percent. The industrial production grew by
12.4 percent and the regional unemployment
in 2011 sank to 2.5 percent, according to EU
calculations.
Concentrated power through strong teams
The actual strength of a business location
is unleashed when economy and science
develop innovations in tandem, through
cooperation. Ideally, a company expands its
R & D in cooperation with research facilities,
thus attaining a higher technological niveau.
In Tirol, this is made especially easy through
so-called competence centers. These research
and transfer facilities for applied research
are aimed at both regional and international
cooperations. Thus, for example, in the
competence center COMET-alpS, sixty-
four companies collaborate with thirty-six
academic partners from Austria and abroad.
Together, they develop new measures of
protection against natural catastrophes and
optimize the availability, allocation and
use of renewable energies. At the COMET
center Oncotyrol, twenty scientific facilities
and forty industry partners work on the
development of more personalised cancer
therapies.

The University of Innsbruck was founded in 1669 and today has
approximately 28,000 students and more than 4,000 employees,
making it the largest and most important research and education
facility in western Austria.
International rankings confirm the leading role the University of Innsbruck plays in basic research.
In this attractive field, a wide ranging repertoire of study programs in all fields of expertise is
offered by 16 different departments. The university has formed numerous partnerships with
educational and research facilities all over the world in a major effort to further an international
exchange of education and research.
The University of Innsbruck is a research university. In order to sharpen and strengthen its profile
as such, above and beyond its academic departments, it has concentrated on three core areas of
exploratory study: the Alps - its people, its environment; molecular biology; and physics. Apart from
these, seven interactionary academic departments pursuing multiple research platforms and thirty-
four research centers push the borders of research and make them more visible through networking.
Leopold Franzens University Innsbruck enables a vital exchange of science and companies.
Through investments in several enterprises, the University of Innsbruck also furthers a concrete
transfer of knowledge and technology to the economy. The university center in Obergurgl as a
conference venue in high alpine surroundings is available not only to Innsbruck’s scientists.
Besides approximately 8,000 lectures and classes on offer each year, there are also more than 600
other university events. The core complex has its center in the historic rooms in the main university
building, the Claudiana and the Catholic Theological Department, but also the buildings on
Campus University Road displaying more contemporary architecture and the new CCB (Center for
Chemistry and Biomedicine) on the banks of the Inn.
