Principal’s
Message
This week Western Access Program Speech Day
Tuesday, PSSA cricket Wednesday, CHS swimming
Thursday and PSSA swimming Friday. This week has
many sporting activities which is I believe a very
positive aspect of this school. Sport transcends racial
and socio-economic barriers (even Rugby Union) and
as such provides opportunity and wonderful memories
for some children. I can clearly remember the feeling
when Moree High School won the University Shield in
Rugby League but I struggle to remember learning my
times tables. However, we must maintain the correct
balance between extra curricula activities and the
requirements of the classroom. I completely
understand that parents of talented children in sport
are constantly paying for buses and other fees but
these extra sporting activities are not compulsory and
again it is a parent decision to approve participation in
extra sport.
Continuing on the sporting theme I am now at the
stage of obtaining the last quote for the netball/tennis
court. I have had to tone down my original plan
because of a funding shortfall but I believe starting
construction is important. At this stage, the first few
tennis games will be without a net and only one goal
for the netball court. Our students are adaptable so it
will not be a problem. I am hoping for another grant to
be successful so completion of the whole project is
possible this year. I believe it is important that this
school has as good or better facilities than schools in
larger centres. Living in a rural area should not be a
disadvantage. Indeed, I want this school to make it a
definite advantage to live in Trundle.
In August the former Governor General of Australia,
Major General Jeffrey will be visiting our school. I have
asked his representative if he can talk to our students
about leadership and a positive mindset. This is an
amazing opportunity for our students to meet an
Australian who has held the highest office in this land. Room 14 has now gone from school sauna to the most
comfortable room in the school with the addition of
refrigerated air-conditioning. This is a significant
investment from school funds but I believe it is
important that our learning spaces are as comfortable
as possible. I can already hear the chorus of people
stating, when I went to school some days were fourty-
seven degrees in our water bottles and I rode a three
legged donkey backwards to school. Times have
changed and we have the technology to make our
rooms comfortable for students so that is what I
believe we should do within our budget restrictions.
The school rock band recently had the second session
with the sound technician who is coaching the band for
the recording of a song. This project places band
members under some increased pressure because they
are stepping up a level. However, if they do not try
they will certainly fail themselves; if they at least try
there is a very good chance of success and a
conversation starter for the rest of their lives. The
challenge is to perform together not as individuals as
with any group.
The school self-funds a guitar program. This is fifteen
dollars per term which is approximately half what one
lesson will cost privately. In return for this massive
subsidy the school expects the money to be paid, a
reasonable expectation I believe. I will have to remove
students from the program this week if the money is
not paid. This is not an easy decision as children suffer
but I cannot allow a culture to develop in the school
that allows people not to pay a small fee for this
privilege. Five dollars twenty cents for a schooner of
beer, fifteen dollars for ten music lessons a term. Sort
of puts it into perspective.
The school agriculture program will have two new
additions in the near future. Agriculture students will
take part in the school Merino Wether Challenge. In
this challenge the school will receive eight young shorn
merino wethers. Schools are responsible for the care
of these sheep up to August when they will be judged
for wool and meat value by the NSW Stud Breeders
Association. They will be then sold and the profits
returned to the school. Thank you to Boyd and Alex
Aveyard for helping us with the logistics of this new
project and providing advice to our students.
The second change in Agriculture is the purchase of an
incubator to breed our own chickens. This will allow
students to be involved in additional aspects of
agriculture. I regularly show the existing hens my
chicken sandwich as motivation to lay more eggs but
production is still down. Maintaining younger stock by
turning over older birds is definitely the answer. Students are being taught agriculture not the care of
pets and as such they need to be aware of all aspects
of animal production including the need to cull
unproductive stock at times. Observant people would
notice that we have fenced the agricultural plot into
small paddocks. This is to allow students to conduct
mini crop trials. All we need is some rain to allow us

Page 5 Term 1 Week 7
to till the land. Well done to Mr Ridges and Mr Grady
for continuing to improve the teaching of agriculture. Schools I believe need to have a wide scope of
curriculum to cater for the talents and interests of all
students. This school has the ability and culture that
allows us to extend the academic ability of students,
but this is only one aspect of school. Not all students
have the ability or desire to be doctors, lawyers or
accountants. This is a positive as I do not want my
accountant to change my oil. When my car needs
servicing my mechanic is the most important person in
the workforce. My accountant should be concentrating
on saving me enough money to afford the service. All
occupations need to be valued and our children need
to believe that they are a success no matter what their
skills are, or their level of development. Extra
curricula activities or extending existing programs, help
students to discover their skills. If you walk around the
school at any time you may see students using state of
the art computers, building drones, fitness classes,
additional art, drama and music. This compliments the
excellent delivery of core curriculum and specialist
programs that have resulted in significant increases in
our NAPLAN results.
Homework frequency and length is one of the most
asked questions of teachers and often can be a
controversial subject. Many parents passionately
believe in homework where as others see little value.
A recent study from the Victoria Institute of Education
involved two random samples of students. One was
exposed to regular homework the other was not. The
study found there was no difference in academic
results between the two groups. The longitudinal study
also found motivation to learn in High School was not
increased by regular homework in primary. In fact,
some students resented the homework so much they
actually resisted work in the classroom environment.
Other studies I expect show completely the opposite.
The Department of Education asks individual schools
to formulate a policy on homework. Next term I will
be surveying parents to gain a perspective of
community views. However, the foundations of the
policy must be:
Homework and assessment task are separate.
Assessment tasks are compulsory.
Parents may discipline students for not completing
homework as a rule in your house but schools
should not have a blanket rule placing sanctions
on children for non-completion of homework.
This is because some student’s do not have a
home environment that is conducive to
completing homework. Therefore I believe
punishing students is a form of discrimination.
Homework must be appropriate to a student age
and ability.
Kindergarten students should review their core
learning at home but no new work should be
set for homework.
Recently every parent would have been especially
shocked at the news of a mother allegedly trying to
drown her two children in the Murray River,
unfortunately succeeding with one. The incident
highlights the extent of mental health problems in our
community and that children are always the innocent
victims of adult problems. A tragic event with massive
continuing affects. Many people may have failed these
children not just the mother.
Mrs Fran Hosie has retired after a long and excellent
service as our school cleaner. Fran always brought a
smile to work and showed genuine pride in her work
and this school, an example to others. The school will
mark her retirement in the near future with a function
of Fran’s choice.
On a bright note the footy season has started. Thank
you to the students who are quick to tell me the score
when the Sharks loose but are surprisingly hard to find
when they win.
Another great week in Trundle

K-6 Swimming For Sport K-6 will be going to the pool for Sport this
Friday.
Please ensure your children have swimmers, a
towel, sunscreen, a swim shirt and $2 for entry
to the pool unless you have a season ticket. We
will be walking back to school at the end of sport
unless we have been notified of alternative
arrangements.
PSSA Boys Cricket This year we are entering a Boys
Cricket team in the PSSA Boys Cricket
competition. We are combining with
Tullamore and have selected a fantastic
team of 12 boys ranging from Years 3-6. Our first
game will be against Condobolin this Wednesday,
8th March. We wish the team the very best of luck
in their first game!
WSSA Swimming Paddy Williams and Harrison Grady will
represent our school and Gobondery/NARRAF at
the WSSA Swimming carnival on Friday, 10th March.
Good luck to these students! We know they will
represent our school and district with pride.
Gobondery/NARRAF Gala Day – Peak Hill The first of our Gala days will be held at Peak Hill
on Friday, 17th March. This Gala day involves
students who are interested in playing Cricket if
they are in Year 5/6 and T-ball if they are in
Year 3/4. It is all about having fun, meeting new
students and learning to play each sport. A note
will be sent home over the coming week.
Crunch and Sip Children are encouraged to bring FRESH fruit or
vegetables to school for Crunch and Sip. They are
also able to have a sipper bottle of water in the
classroom.
K-2 Science Challenge K-2 have been given a STEM (science, technology,
engineering and mathematics) to design a boat that
will float and hold weight. Students have been asked
to think about how they can make a marble float
and what materials they will need to build this. We
will be testing this challenge on Friday 17th March in
our science lesson and you will be able to see our
designs later on that evening at the continental!
Dear Parents & Caregivers If possible, would each child in K-2 bring
in their own pair of headphones?
These will be used in the computer
room each week and also with our classroom laptops and Ipads. Headphones will
be stored safely at school and only used by
the child who owns them.
Thank you, Ms Downes
NO HAT NO PLAY In Term 1, children must wear a wide brimmed
maroon hat. We have a NO HAT NO PLAY
policy. Please ensure that your child has packed or
is wearing their hat each morning.
Please ensure you have written
your child’s name inside the hat.

Secondary
This week sees the return of our work placement
students and supervising teachers. Norma and Erica
Stevenson were superb in both their performance and
attitude last week It was a pleasure to spend time with
these young ladies and as usual the employees were
extremely satisfied with the work of these two
students. Also big thanks to Ms Rowlands who
supervised for a night in Dubbo. We always appreciate
the extra effort our staff commit to enable our
students to access opportunities that they could miss
out on due to our geographical location.
Tuesday our HSC English and Advanced English
students will be in Tullamore for an assessment task.
It’s hard to believe that our Year 12’s have only 2
terms and 5 weeks to go! Thanks to Mrs Gallacher for
taking the students to Tullamore for this assessment.
Our Year 12’s should also realise that they have their
Half Yearly Examinations approaching fast. These will
be held in Week 9 and 10 of this term. Wednesday our Hospitality students will be heading
over to Peak Hill for a practical assessment day. These
days allow our students to demonstrate competencies
in these course which enables them to be awarded
their Certificate II from TAFE which is a nationally
recogonised accreditation. So it is obvious how
important these days are. Thanks to Mr Southon for
taking the students over. Again it is the staff’s
willingness to undertake these tasks that allows our
school to operate so successfully.
On Thursday we have our students who qualified
travelling to Dubbo for the Western Area Swimming
carnival. We wish our students, Monique, Brad, Ryan
and Kylie all the best for their races and thank Mrs
Morgan for organising and supervising on the day.
Our assessment schedule for 7-10 has been revamped
in the last week, with some minor changes being made
to spread out the load of assessment for the students.
The students will receive these later this week. Our
Year 10 students will also be given a copy of our
assessment policy as they are entering a formal
assessment year, with successful students achieving
their ROSA (Record of School Achievement) at the
end of the year. Students in 7, 8 and 9 will receive the
policy as an email for those who wish to study it in
detail.
As always if there are any questions in regards to the
oncoming weeks for secondary students please do not
hesitate to contact myself or Mr Southon at school.
Have a great week
