More than 100 years experience in the development and

production of bicycle tyres has made Continental a unique

company within the industry.

Continental is the only German bicycle tyre manufacturer to

produce its tyres in Germany. Knowing this serves as a mighty

incentive to our engineers and everyone else involved in the

manufacturing process to constantly strive for further

innovations.

In our technology and development center in Korbach, we

are constantly developing new revolutionary technologies

such as the unbeatable Black Chili Compound and the

ultimate Vectran™ Breaker anti-puncture technology, both

used at the top end of race sport. These technologies

demand sophisticated processes to ensure our legendary

end-product quality, and these innovations as well as the

new “ProTection” and ”RaceSport” technology for MTB tyres,

can only be manufactured in our factory in Germany –

“Handmade in Germany”.

In order to offer the best tyre for any application, we rely

equally on dialogue with our professional racers, hobby

cyclists and everyday bike riders.

Black Chili Compound

A unique tread mixture that can only be produced in

Germany is revolutionising bicycle tyres. The dilemma

between achieving improved grip and reduced rolling

resistance has been addressed with the Black Chili

Compound raising performance to a new level. The fact is

that this compound has proved to be the best in many tests

and reviews time and time again, certifi ying an advantage

that can be measured and felt both in the lab and on the bike.

The latest polymers, soot particles optimised down near the

nanoscale, and fi llers guarantee unique performance – from

downhill mountain bike tyres to time trial tyres, they are

second to none amongst tyres in their respective areas of

use. Black Chili Compound improves rolling resistance by

26 % and offers about 30 % more grip than activated silica

compounds, whilst maintaining mileage.

Vectran™’s advantage

Vectran™ is spun from Vectra liquid crystal polymer,

which results in a thread that is thermoplastic and has

multifi laments. This semicrystalline material is harder then

aramid, has fi ve times higher tensile strength than steel and

in addition, is also lighter than comparable nylon thread.

Vectran™ maintains these attributes even in the most

adverse weather conditions.

Technology made in Germany

PolyX – Built to resist.With the PolyX Breaker, we are bringing our car expertise

to the bicycle tyre sector. Polyester has been used

successfully in car tyres for years and has proven itself

over and over. The highly durable polyester thread is cross-

stitched with a close mesh. As a result, very high fabric

density is achieved, which not only makes the breaker

more durable against foreign objects, but also particularly

resistant to punctures.

RaceSport – the name says it all.We are now getting to the heart of the continual

development of our Supersonic casings in mountain bike

racing. This includes a sophisticated light construction with

Black Chili and universal applicability as well as tubeless

ready tyres with greatly improved puncture protection.

ProTection stands for puncture protection.Tyres with this feature are particularly robust and immune to

damage or penetration from foreign objects. The side walls

are protected against damage with an additional ProTection

layer – in addition to a new design and Black Chili

Compound for the world’s toughest trails.

applied to this uncompromising race tyre set. The new GP

Attack benefi ts from its special version of our Black Chili

Compound that gives the streamlined 22 mm front tyre more

grip with lower rolling resistance. The optimum front wheel tyre

gets you quickly into the turns, feeling light and responsive

whilst providing ample service life. The new GP Force is a

powerful rear wheel specialist and with its 24 mm section width

combined with a fast Black Chili Compound, it gives excellent

traction and road handling that’s second to none. Both tyres are

made with Vectran™ puncture protection and show wear and

tear levels via indicators in the tread, details that show

professionals are at work.

round race bike tyre on the market. Not only is it fast and

super grippy, thanks to its state of the art Black Chili rubber

compound, but it is also tough with a healthy tread layer and

of course our Vectran™ anti puncture breaker layer

underneath. So for reliability, longevity and all out

performance for your race machine, the GP 4000s is the

only choice. Now available in 700 x 25C also.

Grand Prix 4000s

The star in the peloton! For the coloured GP 4000 tyres, the activated silica compound

improves the handling at stability limits and gives great rolling

resistance. The anti-tear formula in the rubber compound

prevents tread brittleness while increasing mileage

performance. Xirallic colours give your machine a look of stylish

elegance. The extra special thing about the GP 4000 and GP

4000s is their puncture protection made from Vectran™ liquid

crystal fi bres. The patented Vectran™ Breaker reconciles the

confl icting goals of low weight, low rolling resistance and top

puncture and cut resistance in a fascinating manner. The

Vectran™ fl uid crystal fi bres were developed for airbag systems

in the automotive and aerospace industries. The material is

extremely tear and cut resistant and is also fl exible. It retains

these properties even under constant stress – as opposed to

Aramid.

protection system and the DuraSkin™-anti-cut fabric turn the

GatorSkin, formely known as Ultra GatorSkin, into a real long

distance runner. In varying widths from 23 mm to 32 mm it can

be used on the way to work as well as training for road races or

for sportives and audax. A durable, tough tyre at a really nice

price. A modern tread design that collects less debris and the

expansion of the product line to the new dimension 28-559 for

fast MTB street riding.

MORE is what you get!The Ultra GatorSkin has set the bar for a perfectly-balanced

blend of ride quality and long-term durability without breaking

the bank … but still the roads of North America demand a

model even tougher. The all NEW GatorHardshell delivers!!!

Sharing the bead-to-bead protection of DuraSkin, the Hardshell

casing wraps further into the sidewall and an extra-wide

PolyX Breaker covers the entire tread strip from shoulder-

to-shoulder. Added material in the tread strip not only

What do German Conti tyres have in common with Hawaiian leis? They both adorn the IRONMAN winner!Its VectranBreaker anti puncture belt withstands even sharp-

edged volcano ash. With a “speedy” slick tread pattern and

tightly woven carcass, it is optimized for consistent top speeds.

Indicators in the tread show the wear rate of the tyre and it has

all the capability characteristics of the Grand Prix 4000 but is

styled towards multisports athletes. With our Black Chili

Compound also being a feature of this tyre, the GP Triathlon

sports all the latest tyre technology from Korbach, Germany!

Grand Prix Triathlon

Faster than the speed of sound!With the Grand Prix Supersonic your contact with the road

can be tuned to minimum weight and minimum rolling

resistance. Together with a “Race 28 Supersonic” inner tube,

our quickest tyre weighs only 200 g! The slick rolling area

made out of a carbon black mixture looks cool and is of

course made using our Black Chili recipie. But be cautious!

The Grand Prix Supersonic is a very apt weapon in fi ghting for

a personal best time, although for this extra speed, the tyre

does not feature any additional puncture protection and has

limited mileage use. With this in mind, the Grand Prix

Supersonic is not a tyre for training! Revised 2011 model.

The legend lives!The name Continental Grand Prix has become a brand in

its own right in cycling circles. The Grand Prix is THE classic

tyre and a sign to quality and performance, a claim which

appears again in the new Grand Prix. Like its predecessor, the

new generation is eager to set own standards. The new Grand

Prix leads the trend towards wide tyres in cycling. Wider tyres

roll easier, have a higher mileage and offer more comfort and

grip. The main size of the Grand Prix is 24 mm. Wide enough to

show off the advantages of wider tyres, but still light and slim

enough to be built into any racing machine.

Technology from hell!Thanks to its DuraSkin™ anti-tear fabric, the Grand Prix

4-Season holds up under extreme conditions. In the Paris –

Roubaix race, the “Hell of the North”, cyclists equipped with

DuraSkin™ enhanced tyres have the fewest tyre related

problems during the race. Incorporating our special wear

resistant carbon compound, the tyre is characterized by very

good mileage performance as well as excellent adhesion on

wet roads and at low temperatures. With the 23 mm, 25 mm

and 28 mm versions, the Grand Prix 4-Season makes it

possible to select the right tyre for various road qualities and

comfort requirements. A double VectranBreaker belt under the

tread raises the puncture and cut protection to the highest level

available on the market.

compound, the Hometrainer doesn’t experience the heat

buildup of a road tyre, nor does it suffer the tread separation

that the road tyre is prone to under the special loads

occuarring when in cycling and braking on the roller’s

revolving drums.

DuraSkin™ anti-cut fabric. The Sprinter GatorSkin itself

tyre. The professional riders use a similar combination in their

The time machine.

TT stands for time trial. Entire tours are decided in the fi ght

against the clock. This is reason enough to offer particularly

fast tyres. While it was conceived as a time trial tyre, the

Podium TT is also very popular with professionals for normal

races. The reason for this is its construction. Thanks to the

latest Black Chili Compound, this chrono specialist, available

in 19 mm and 22 mm width, is not only super fast, but its

VectranBreaker offers excellent puncture prevention. In

addition, the 22 mm width version of the Podium is lightweight

at only 205 g. A low weight means low rotation energy. The

thickness of the tread was reduced to 0.7 mm, which is still

enough for a few tough race days. The ultrafast slick tread

shows how fast it really is even when it’s not moving.

Tyres for trick cycling, cycle ball and bicycle polo as well as indoor wheelchair sports.The Saalsport grips very well on all indoor surfaces and does

not leave traces of abrasion behind. Its highly fi rm casing

withstands the extreme strains of indoor cycle sports and the

The Saalsport tyre is cemented as a tubular tyre onto special

tub rims. This is the only way to warrant that the tyre doesn’t

The aluminium rim cement for tubulars is completely different

from the carbon aluminium cement for tubulars. This is

particularly true for the connection between the tyre and the

rim. The crucial factor here is the different surface structure

and primarily the different heat conductivities of the materials.

It is thus important to use different types of cement for the

different attributes of the materials.

Aluminium rim cement for tubulars.

The aluminium rim cement for tubulars, in the typical

continentalyellow packaging, has proven itself for decades.

Generations of racing cyclists and mechanics rely on this

cement. Maximum safety is achieved with high adhesive

strength and good processability, the most important aspect

of cemented tyres. The classic bead guarantees a perfect fi t

and the application is conventional. However, processing

differs entirely from that of the carbon cement, so please

always pay attention to the application information.

Carbon rim cement for tubulars.

Carbon rim cement for tubulars, in a black packaging,

was specifi cally designed for increased thermal strain

and the particular properties of the surface of carbon. The

unfavourable heat dissipation of carbon softens conventional

cement, particularly during long descents, which means

that the tyre may become detached from the rim. The carbon

cement, which has been especially developed for carbon

rims, remains hard even at high temperatures. Note: It is

essential to pay attention to the application instructions!

Note: Carbon tubular cement for carbon rims must be handled

differently to conventional tubular cement for aluminum rims.

The new X-King (pronounced cross king) completely covers

the gap between Race and Mountain King. The 2.4" carcass

offers superior absorption, but remains light enough to make

a good showing during a race. This tyre, however, shows its

true class during marathons or extended tours. The X-King is

incredibly fast for a studded tyre and it feels at home on all

trails, on hard as well as loose terrain. Its Black Chili

tyre - and no mud gets stuck on the wheel tread despite the

The speed master.A tyre for cross-country competition in dry/hard conditions.

Thanks to its new feature, the Black Chili tread compound,

the Twister offers the lowest possible rolling resistance and

unbelievable adhesion. Weighing in at a mere 370 g, the

Twister Supersonic is a true tuning component which doesn’t

slow things down in the least. But beware, Supersonic tyres

offer limited puncture protection compared to other formats.

Biking pleasure on all trails.Tyres of the width 2.3 are versatile. They can be used

on low mountain trails just as well as the Alpencross.

The round tyre cross-section typical for Continental and

the GravityArc™ tread lead to playful handling. The tyre can

be turned easily in curves and reliably sinks its claws into

loose surfaces. The Gravity’s aggressive appearance does not

it is lightweight as well. The Diesel excels not only on

when heading uphill. A true all-rounder. The favourable wire

version was equipped with additional reinforcement for bike

park use, where the only thing that counts is the durability

measured in drops and jumps.

riding and racing, the Vapor concentrates on fast rolling,

using the Gravity Arc tread design. Wide centre lugs keep the

tyre rolling fast whilst the Arcs (lug bases) in the

predictable handling. Worth a try for XC marathon racers

looking for faster lap times and good puncture protection.

The 29" X-King version (pronounced cross king) completely

covers the gap between Race and Mountain King. The

voluminous 2.4" carcass offers superior absorption, but

remains light enough to make a good showing during a race.

This tyre, however, shows its true class during marathons or

extended tours. The X-King is incredibly fast for a studded

tyre and feels at home on all trails, on hard as well as loose

terrain. The shoulder lugs provide absolute security in curves

negotiated at high speeds. The X-King was developed with

the professionals of the Topeak Ergon Team and is the

board. So that is why all of Tilmann Waldthaler’s experience

has been put to use in the development of the TravelContact.

Unitube SystemInformation on tubes

Hidden tuning: In addition to the large range of different

dimensions and valves, there are different types of tubes for

specifi c needs in our Continental Unitube System, which is

particularly well organised and user-friendly. The standard tube

available in all dimensions offers the best compromise for the

demands of daily life. Weight and rolling resistance can,

however, be considerably optimised with Light and Supersonic

tubes. A reduced wall thickness of as little as 0.45 mm will,

however, increase the risk of punctures. Light tubes also have

to be reinfl ated more often. In comparison, the Hermetic Plus

tube is a carefree product. The higher butyl percentage and the

increased wall thickness make it particularly puncture proof.

This tube is the favourite of many bike rental companies since

it also retains air for a long time. Our downhill tubes are also

especially strong and voluminous. They effectively prevent

punctures with their extra thick walls.

Carcass and tpi

Carcass construction – the makeup of the basic structure.

The carcass is the basic structure for all tyres. The

construction of the carcass, the material and the thickness

of the thread depends on the demands that are placed on

the tyre. Continental always works with high-quality

carcasses made from nylon strings that are fi rst woven and

then rubberised. Nylon can be easily combined with rubber

and is durable in all types of weather. The thickness of the

thread gives the tyre its specifi c attributes. Thread thickness

is recorded in tpi (threads per inch) and describes the

number of threads per 2.54 cm (1 inch). Fabrics used have

22 tpi, 28 tpi, 60 tpi and 110 tpi. Very fi ne material makes the

tyre smoother and protects the carcass from punctures.

Coarse fabric is more cut-resistant and makes the tyre more

robust. The choice of fabric correlates to the purpose of use.

The standard is a three-ply basic carcass. Additional

breakers can be put under the tread in order to reinforce the

tyre even more and to increase puncture protection. There

are different types of breaker builds and materials for

different uses whether they are highly elastic specialty

rubber, such as our Plus brand or fabric breakers, such as

PolyX and Vectran in our race tyres. You can see how the tyre

is constructed in the tyre specifi cation. Points listed are the

number of layers, the sum of the tpi and the type of puncture

protection. 3/180 + Vectran is equivalent to three layers of a

60 tpi fabric with an additional VectranBreaker.

Compound technology

Black Chili Compound — it’s all about how you mix it.

At the Korbach site, where Continental’s R&D department is

located, engineers have been racking their brains for a long

time about a fundamental problem of manufacturing tyres.

The running properties of a tyre’s rubber mixture are made up

of three interrelated factors: grip, rolling resistance and

mileage. Engineers are faced with the following dilemma: If

you improve one of the factors, you in turn, usually worsen at

least one of the other factors. A tyre with maximum grip wears

faster and rolls slower. If you make the tyre faster or give it a

longer life, its grip will in turn be reduced. We had already

reached a good compromise with the top technology to date,

the activated silica tyres. However, our developers wanted

more and went to new lengths to fi nally present their

sensational result in 2008:

Black Chili Compound, the name of our new, revolutionary

tread compound, is based on the newest fi ndings of polymer

and raw material research. For Black Chili, we refi ne

innovative synthetic rubber with proven natural rubber to

particularly high-performance tread compounds. We add soot

particles nearly nanoscale in size, which are optimised in their

form and surface characteristics, to adapt the compound to

the respective intended application. Tyres with Black Chili

Compound reach a performance level that had not been

reached previously. Compared to activated silica tyres, Black

Chili tyres have 26 % lower rolling resistance, 30 % higher grip

and 5 % longer mileage. It does not matter whether it is a

racing bike or a mountain bike — the speed and grip

advantage can be clearly felt. The elaborate compound

technology is so sensitive that tyres with Black Chili

Compound are produced solely in Korbach.

The innovation in puncture protection.

Vectran™ is a multifi bred thermoplastic yarn, made of

melted Vectra™ Liquid Crystal Polymer. Vectran™ is the

only LCP fi bre in the world, which is made using a spinning

process. Reinforcing and matrix fi bres made of Vectran™,

are lightweight, extremely durable, have reliable longevity

and are fi ve times stronger as steel. With a layer (breaker)

breakdowns more effi ciently than with a Nylon

Double Breaker. This is because a single Vectran™ layer is

lighter, more fl exible and stronger than the two nylon layers.

T E C H N O L O G Y

Airtight

The new processing techniques have succeeded in

complimenting our existing puncture protection system to

result in the new PolyX Breaker. For the fi rst time we have

used polyester as Breaker material and rely on our experience

in car tyres, where we have used polyester successfully for

many years. The advantage of our new PolyX fabric lies

however in details. The fi bers are often crossed in the

manufacturing process. This gives us a dense fabric with a

minimum of space between the individual threads. Result:

Whether sharp thorns or large shards, PolyX is failsafe and

is very resistant to any kind of foreign body without reducing

the rolling resistance.

TirePositioningSystem™

The last little bit of what is technically feasible is achieved

with the Continental TyrePositioningSystem. Motorcyclists

have already known for ages that a front tyre is subject to

different demands than its back counterpart. The smaller

front tyre results in reduced aerodynamic resistance and

improved steering. A grip-optimised tread compound

provides the necessary grip, particularly for riding through

wet curves. The wider back tyres have better traction and at

the same time offer more comfort with their larger contact

areas. Thanks to a rolling resistance-optimised compound

and a larger contact area of the back tyre, there is less

abrasion. The result is a system for front and back tyres for

professional cycling that breaks ground and can be found in

our GP Attack and Force combinations.

ProTection

Reliability in all conditions.

ProTection stands for puncture protection. These tyres are

particularly robust and impervious to damage or the entering

of foreign objects. They are not only particularly sturdy at the

sides with a puncture protection insert that is added around

the complete casing, but the tread is thus also signifi cantly

better protected against cuts and punctures.

The 2011 ProTection generation not only offers 30 % better

puncture protection than in the previous year; the weight was

also reduced by 25 %. The self-damping and roll properties

were further improved. The more robust, but lighter and more

fl exible carcass adapts better to the subsurface. This

improves traction and rolling resistance. The design has also

changed. Instead of the brown DuraSkin casing, the

ProTection tyres now come entirely in black with a continuous

fl ag design.

RaceSport

The name says it all.

For years, our Supersonic carcasses were the perfect starting

point for the sport of mountain bike racing. Now, we are even

going to outdo ourselves.

RaceSport technology, developed in close cooperation with

professional mountain bikers, continues to use a consistent

light construction, but offers signifi cantly more puncture

protection enabling more universal applications. The

optimised carcass guarantees necessary protection. The

special UST bead offers the option of Tubeless Ready use in

addition to conventional assembly. For prevention, thanks to

the tub in particular with UST rims, only a small amount of

sealant is necessary. This improves the rolling properties and

reduces weight. RaceSport technology offers the perfect

symbiosis of lightness and puncture prevention.

Deutsche Technik in detail

PlusBreaker

Puncture protection from highly elastic specialty rubber is

used between the tread and the carcass. Nearly impenetrable,

this puncture protection fends off all types of foreign objects.

Even a tack cannot get through. The carcass is effectively

protected from damage. Tyres with PlusBreaker can now be

found in almost every segment: Be it racing bikes, Cyclocross

or City/Trekking bikes, PlusBreaker guarantees maximum

safety, without negatively impacting the riding properties of

the tyre. The consistency of the breaker was adjusted so that

the tyres do not feel wobbly when taking curves. PlusBreaker

is puncture protection through and through. Note: please

check the recommended tyre pressure weekly using a

manometer. Plus tyres are built very rigidly, making it hard to

feel tyre pressure. Tyres used with too little tyre pressure have

higher rolling resistance and also wear faster.

Continental Tubeless Tyres for the

Universal System Tubeless.

Tubeless Tyres by Continental work with both UST and

Rigida/Nagesti rims and wheels. Tyre and rim form an airtight

chamber. A tube is not necessary and pinchfl ats not possible

anymore. In comparison to the conventional system, the tyre

pressure can be lowered. The comfort of the ride increases.

At a lower tyre pressure the tyre defl ects more. The contact

patch of the tyre increases and the tread adapts to the

ground better. Tubeless tyres allow decreased air pressure

and therefore deliver more traction.

DuraSkin

Tyres with DuraSkin sidewall protection have to roll with the

punches. These tyres are used in the harshest conditions. On

messenger bikes, the tyres skid along curbs, on travel bikes,

they cross continents without wearing through and in

professional cycling they have to endure tough tests such as

Paris-Roubaix. The high-quality polyamide fabric reliably

protects the casing of the tyre and protects the tyre from the

worst conditions. These tyres stand out with their brown

sidewalls.

Continental SafetySystem –

the system of Puncture Protection.

The SafetySystem Puncture Protection is made of a strong

and tight Nylon fabric. This fabric is additionally reinforced

with Kevlar. The result is a tire construction that is highly

resistant against pinches and cuts. The SafetySystem

protects the tyre against debris, thorns and broken glass.

The SafetySystem keeps the tire lightweight and fl exible. It

adapts to the rolling motion and keeps the rolling resistance

low. The SafetySystem is

build in between the tread

and the casing. Here it

protects the casing

fabric and contributes

to a long lifespan of the

tyre.

Note on weight.

Building light tyres is the avowed goal of our developers and

employees in production. Occasionally, however, there may

be some slight variance from the weight stated in the

catalogue. This variance results from the tolerances in the

width of the tread and fabric rubber lining that cannot be

avoided in the manufacturing process of production. The

weight listed in the catalogue is based on target weights that

were established from previous series and are checked again

and again during ongoing production. Deviations of up to

10 % from the target weights thus are possible depending on

the model.

Note on tyre pressure.

Tyre pressure immediately has an impact on how your bike

handles, its life span and rolling resistance. The tyre can only

develop its full potential with the correct operating pressure.

In addition to tyre volume and rider or system weight, the

intended application also plays a part. Each Continental tyre

has a tyre recommendation on the casing and information

on the maximum fi lling pressure. If the tyre pressure is too

low, wear increases. The risk of puncture damage and tyre

movement increases. Fatigue cracks can occur. Excessively

high tyre pressure makes the tyre inelastic. Traction, grip and

any rolling resistance become worse, so check the operating

pressure of your bike at regular intervals. Tour and mountain

bike riders should check tyre pressure at least once a

month, racing cyclists once a week. When using Light and

Supersonic tubes, tyre pressure should be checked before

every ride.

Apex

The sidewall of freeride and downhill tires is subjected to

extraordinarily high loads. A rubber profi le between the

carcass layers ensures stability. The Apex sits on the tire

core and reinforces the sides of the tire. The tire does not

impact on the rim during rough rides over rocky ground. The

tire stays upright better when riding

around bends. It does not bend

over the sides of the rim when

subjected to transverse loads,

and always stays true to the

course.
