Dear Year 6 pupil,
We are looking forward to meeting you again in September, but before we do, we have designed some exciting tasks for you to complete over the next few weeks and in the Summer holiday. We really want you try your best to complete all that you can but don’t worry if you can’t finish all the tasks. Make it look wonderful, make it interesting and most of all make sure you produce your best work.
In your first week at Golborne High School, in September, you will hand your booklet to your tutor. There will be certificates and rewards for the best booklets in each tutor. Categories will include ‘best presentation’ , ‘most accurate’ and ‘most detailed’ and will be awarded by your Head of House.
Remember—don’t ask you parents or teachers to help you—just try your best.
We look forward to seeing all your hard work in September.
Mrs A Stott
Deputy Headteacher
Golborne High School

Dear Parents and carers,
Please encourage your child to complete as much of this booklet as possible. They should start each page but may find that they are unable to complete them all. It is best that your child attempt this work alone. This will help their tutors find out about them as a learner, which is very important for us.
Thank you for your support and cooperation
We look forward to working with your children in September.

Task 2.
1. Label, on the image, what interests you. Look at each box and zoom in on the detail. 2. Label each idea with ambitious and sophisticated adjectives. 3. Consider what sophisticated verbs you could use. E.g. how are the verbs moving?
Challenge. Can you think of an example of a simile, metaphor or personification for each box?
To be successful in Task 3, you should use: A range of punctuation for effect. These should include a semi-colon, colon, brackets and a hyphen. A range of ambitious adjectives to support your description. You could use a thesaurus to support
you with this. Paragraphs of different lengths for effect. This should include at least one short paragraph. This
could be a word or a sentence. A full range of sentence types throughout the writing, including: simple, compound and complex. A range of sentence starters. You should avoid starting your sentence with ‘the’. Instead, begin with
a noun, adjective, adverb or preposition.
Task 3.
Now for the best bit! You now need to write your description of the image above, you should aim to spend around 40 minutes writing and should aim for approximately one side of A4. You can write this on the lined sheets attached.
If you are struggling to begin, you may want to choose one of the sentence starters below to help you:
• Glaring at me across the abandoned farmyard, it was clear the farmhouse held a wealth of secrets … • Prowling threateningly , above the farmhouse, the crows protected what was theirs … • Although the sign screamed danged, I continued to walk …

Geography Transition Task – Geography – Year 7
Task 1: Thinking like a Geographer
At Golborne High School, #ExcellentGeographers look for clues in images to try and work out what is happening currently or in the future. Use the image to try and answer the questions below.
I – Identify – what can you see?
D – Describe – what problems will be created here?
E – Explain – why do you think this has happened?
A – Apply – why do you think this image may become a reality?
L – Link – do you think something similar will happen in other places around the world? Why?
Superstar Challenge: What is happening in the Maldives that is similar to this photograph?

From Primary to Secondary: The Year 7 Homework Project
We do not want you to forget all the great skills you worked on at primary school so you are going to show us what you can already do. You are going to pick a topic that you studied at primary school and create a project that you will present to the class. We have created a list of skills you have to show us to meet our expectations; this is called your passport. The key to doing well on this project is showing us as many skills as you can that are on your passport but do not worry, we are always here to help.
You can choose a topic from below or do a historical topic you are really passionate about. We have included the names of some significant people from each topic, which might help you later.
Topics Significant People Ancient Greece Hippocrates Pericles
Homer Ancient Rome Julia Caesar Galen
Mark Anthony Mayans Itzamn
Kukulcan Famous explorers Christopher Columbus
Francis Drake Blackbeard Victorians Queen Victoria Prince Albert
Florence Nightingale WW1 General Haig Wilfred Owen
Lord Kitchener WW2 Neville Chamberlain
Winston Churchill Adolf Hitler Project Guidelines
• Your project should be no smaller or bigger than two sides of A4 or one A3 sheet. You can use up to four pictures.
• If it is handwritten, you must write on normal lines. Your project must be neat and readable. Remember, this is one of your first chances to impress.
• If you are typing your project, keep the font size at 14 and do not copy and paste; we want to see what you can do, not what the internet can do.
• This project should take around 2-3 hours and your teacher will want your project to be your very best work.
