Jim’s Journal It’s already the middle of October and the summer season is definitely behind us. It was good to see so many of you able to take a part in some of our summer activities. Now, as we approach fall, the days get shorter, the weather not quite as good, and soon the holidays will be upon us. But wait; first we have that wonderful November activity, ELECTIONS!!!!! Yeah I know that there are also elections dealing with Federal, State, and Local votes, some will determine who represents you, some will determine if your taxes go up, but the biggest election comes late in November when we elect new VCCA Officers. These people will lead us in our car activities next year. This years officers have served us well and I thank them for their time and effort in helping to keep the club running during my term as your director. However, several of them have made their wishes known to step down and let someone else take a turn. We are currently looking for members who would like to fill the offices of Director, Assistant Director, Activities, Historian, and Club Store. Stop and think for a moment if you could do one of these jobs. None of them takes a lot of time, and somebody is always willing to help, but we need members to take over for those stepping down.

The club received a note from Jim Farris. His recovery is going well and is looking forward to getting back able to participate in Car Club activities. Jim Martoza has published his note elsewhere in the Tappet Clatter. To welcome him back, maybe we could nominate him for a couple of the above-mentioned offices. JUST KIDDING Jim….

Our annual awards banquet is in January, not that far away to start thinking about it. If anybody would like to help in setting it up, or has an idea or where to hold it this year, please let me know.

Jim

Newsletter via the “Web” Hi all, At the club meeting on Monday night, we discussed the possibility of using the “web” as the means for club member to access our monthly newsletters. Starting in January 2000, each month is currently available on the web. You can view it in color providing you have a color monitor and print it out (in color?) right from your PC. But I still need to work out some bugs because the issues are currently not real printer friendly. How many members would view the newsletter each month via the “web” in lieu of the copy sent to you through regular mail? This would not only save the club money by reducing the amount of copies we print each month, but also the unnecessary postage too. You would be notified via e-mail that the web version of the newsletter is available. PLEASE, let me know if this would be an acceptable way for you to view the newsletter. Thanks you very much and again please let me know if this will work for you. I look forward to your responses about our newsletter that is on-line.

Regards,

Jim Martoza

This is the second map provided by Tom Lauderback. He believes that this was published sometime around 1926. This journey starts in Seattle and travels to Stanwood. The last stage goes from Stanwood up to Bellingham. I know the map is not too clear, but the comments in the text are very interesting. Thanks, Tom for sharing your discovery. Look for the final part in future newsletters.

October Meeting Program

Topic: TRUCKSTELL OVERDRIVE UNITS were available for Chevrolets in the 1940's and 1950's. Monday night George Haley will bring in one of these units and Walt Blair will bring some technical information. Join us for an interesting evening.

THANK YOU

Dear Jim, I would like to thank our Puget Sound Region VCCA members for the many cards and well wishes sent to me during the early weeks of my recovery following heart bypass surgery. They helped greatly to lighten the recovery period. It's been six weeks now since the surgery and I seem to be getting better each day. The whole process was quite a shock to the family and me but now that it's in the past we are told that the future looks much better than it did a couple of months ago. I am eagerly looking forward to participating in Club activities once again. I'm thankful for the great care I received in the hospital and at home from Mary Ellen and my family. In addition, the whole process has made me aware of how many good friends we have. The expressions in the many cards, well wishes and prayers received has made Mary Ellen and me realize how fortunate we are to be blessed with so many thoughtful friends. Jim Farris This thank you note was sent to Jim Darby via regular mail.

General Membership Meeting Minutes [SEPTEMBER 23, 2002] Call to Order: Meeting called to order at 7:38 by director Jim Darby with a greeting and a note that only the September meeting has been confirmed at this location. The potential of a strike has kept the school district from confirming the entire year. We had a guest, Don Gyme (phonetic spelling) Don has a 1936 coupe he bought on the internet. It turned out to be a great car and is driving it. Welcome back Neal Hanson, a member we haven’t seen in some time.

General Business: For the good of the order it was brought up that the club is seeking officers for next year. Jim Darby is finishing his second term and can no longer hold the director position. Call Jim if you can help the club by serving as an elected officer. Balloting is in November.

Swap Meets: Those attending the Centralia Swap Meet felt is was a good meet, not real big but good enough to warrant the trip to Centralia. The next meet is in Monroe October 12th and 13th.

Tours & Club Activities: Five families enjoyed the nice drive to Tacoma to tour the new Museum of Glass. They felt parts were interesting but other parts were not so great, especially the gallery of stuff that wasn’t glass. Next months tour is a Saturday tour to Everett to see how rowing shells are made. We will leave Bellevue around noonish and have a lunch stop on the way. The date is October 26th. Check next month’s Tappet Clatter.

Other bits of Information: Jim Farris Report: Jim looks better but he hasn’t recovered yet. We should see him at our holiday events. Jim Martoza posts the Tappet Clatter on the Web Site. Jim has posted the Tappet Clatter on our web site and has asked members to check it out and try printing it. Let him know how the copy looks. This will probably be an option for the future. The web site will be in full color and you should be able to print the newsletter if you want a hard copy in color as well. Not mailing out as many newsletters will save the club money$$. For the Good of the Order, Walt Blair does really comprehensive automobile appraisals and has been charging $150 which includes digital images and a very complete written document. Unfortunately he has raised his prices for the general public and will need to raise his price to club members after the first of the year. Respectfully submitted, Don Comstock

How Chevy got its Bow-Tie from Ana Haley (From the Standard Catalog of Chevrolet 1912-1990)

When the first Chevrolet hit the market in 1912, it lacked its now world-famous insignia, commonly referred to as the "bow-tie". We know that it was a W.C. Durant inspiration. Exactly where he got it is not so certain. According to Durant, he had been carrying the idea around in his head for a long time. With the fast-moving Durant, anything over an hour would have fitted that time frame. Durant’s explanation of where he got it depended on to whom he was telling the story. The Paris hotel version was his favorite and the one he told most frequently. It was explained the romantic Billy the motif on the wallpaper of a hotel suite he was staying in. It struck him instantly and he tore off a piece and put it in his wallet. His widow remembered the bow-tie’s genesis quite differently. She said her husband spotted the design in the rotogravure section of a Sunday newspaper he was reading in Hot Springs, VA. In either event, Durant was very pleased with it.

From the Glove Box From our September meeting, we have some great questions in the Glove Box. On 1938-1962 transmission front bearings, are these bearings supposed to be sealed or open? George Haley writes that about four years ago, he updated his 38 tranny with gears and bearings from a 1955 tranny. Later he had a rear bearing failure and replaced both bearings. When he re-moved the front bearing (which was still good) it was open on the front and sealed on the rear next to the gears. He wonders how it got any

lubrication. The new front bearing that he purchased was sealed. Which is the correct bearing? Jim Seiber would like to know the simple and safe way to clean gunk out of a gas tank of a 38 Chev that has been sitting for about 10 years. The in-line fuel filter keeps plugging. And, I am wondering how to clean up the wood trunk shelf over the spare tire in my 40 Chev Coupe. Also, what finish was on the wood originally? If any of you have a question or a solution to a problem you are encountering, please send them to my email address at [email protected]

Thanks for all of your contributions.

Cleaning White-wall Tires I saw a hint in a car magazine on cleaning white-wall tires: Suggested to use regular carburetor cleaner – spray on and immediately clean with soap and water. Cleans quickly and well and tires will not yellow later. I tried it and it certainly cleaned well – give it a try. Steve Grissom

October Lunch and Shell Tour to Pocock’s (continued from front page)

The man was named William E. Boeing and he hired them to make pontoons for the float planes of his new airplane company. George became a foreman of the assembly department and Dick became a boat builder for Yale University. In 1922 George returned to boat building and built a boat for the unknown 1923 UW team that won them the championship back east. Thus began the legend of George Pococks winning racing shells. George’s son, Stanley, attended the U of W, majoring in engineering and rowing on the UW team. He eventually helped run the racing shell business with his dad and coached the UW racing team. While his father went off to Australia for the 1956 Olympics, Stanley replaced the wood ribs with a fiberglass sandwich skin, which was quite an innovation in 1956. In 1961 he built the first fiberglass rowboat. Stanley sold the business in 1985 to a long time family friend, Bill Tytus, who had frequently visited the shop starting when he was a boy. Bill is continuing to refine the design and construction to keep Pocock Racing Shells a leader in the industry. With research and development of light composite structures and a lot of in house experimentation with resins, paints, laminating fabrics and material he is making larger leaps forward with many new shells being introduced. Bill is also interested in old cars and has a 1956 Nomad that he has had for a little over a year. He may have it at the shop for our visit if he is feeling comfortable with the brakes. We hope to have a good turn out of older Chevy’s as he is very interested in seeing them. We may make one more stop at a pumpkin farm, but this is optional and it will depend on time and interest from the group. I keep wondering what Chevrolet would be like today if the Pocock brothers were interested in racing cars instead of boats and met up with Louis Chevrolet.
