CHAPTER 9 Lythcott-Haims begins the chapter by stating that in the mid 2000s her colleagues became resigned to the fact that helicopter parenting was not a fad but was here to stay. She was curious to see whether these “helicopter parents” would follow their children into the workplace. She maintains that they have. Millennials in the workplace have been called “orchids” (cannot survive outside the greenhouse) and “teacups” (chip easily and then are ruined). They are also called “veal” – raised in a controlled environment and then led metaphorically to the slaughter. Although I am not personally familiar with these terms I am aware of the behaviours that give rise to them. I recently received a call from a colleague seeking some information about a youngster who had worked for us and the best way in which I could describe this individual’s approach to some of the challenges of the workplace was to suggest the individual had “millennial’s disease”. Studies show that youngsters who have “helicopter parents” (my own staff have coined a new term “lawn mower parents”) lack a belief in their own abilities to complete tasks and reach goals. They are more likely to become dependent on others, lack coping mechanisms and soft skills, like responsibility and conscientiousness. Our present work environment is highly fluid and fast paced. Our youngsters need to be flexible and agile, take on responsibility and have the ability to bounce quickly back from adversity. Lythcott-Haims shares a number of cautionary tales from numerous HR practitioners describing the deleterious effect that over-parenting has on the job prospects of our young people. Closer to home, in our own school context, we know that our students need to be prepared for employment in a world that will place a very high demand on, abilities to solve problems, and, the social skills needed to negotiate the workplace effectively. Best we not intervene too readily in their interactions on the playground.

OLD BOYS’ NEWS Cameron Clark was offered places to study at Brown, Edinburgh, Kings College London and Harvard. After much thought Cameron managed to narrow the choices down to Brown and Harvard. To quote Cameron, “After visiting both and much unbiased reasoning, I chose Harvard and I’m so excited to start.”

We wish him everything of the best for his studies and look forward to hearing of his experiences.

FOOD FOR LIFE SA is affiliated to Food for Life Global, which is the world’s largest

vegan/vegetarian food relief programme serving over a million plates of cooked meals a

day and is funded mainly by member donations and corporate grants.

Food for Life SA currently distributes approximately 10 000 plates of food per day.

The outreach committee at Pridwin would love to contribute by collecting items that will

be used in preparation of meals. Please drop off with your son’s class teacher.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Welcome to the musical month of May! Our Music Department has a very busy month ahead. Please take note of the following events taking place: ATKV APPLOUS (SENIOR CHOIR) - Friday, 18 May: 19h00 – 20h00 The Pridwin Senior Choir will again be participating in the Regional Festival of the ATKV Applous National Choir Competition. This Festival takes place at Hoërskool Randburg, Malibongwe Drive, Randburg. The boys are expected at the venue at 18h15, with their performance taking place at 19h00. There will be a bus available from school, departing at 17h15. However, parents may take their boys directly to the venue, as long as the boys are there by the required time. A letter with more comprehensive details will be emailed to the choir parents today. TRINITY ROCK & POP EXAMS – Monday, 21 May The Trinity Rock & Pop Exams will be taking place in the auditorium. The schedule will be sent out to the relevant boys today. PRIDWIN ENSEMBLE EVENING – Tuesday, 22 May: 18h00 – 19h15 This wonderful evening of ensemble music is an opportunity for our Senior Ensembles to perform at one event, and for parents to hear what the other ensembles get up to. All our Senior Ensembles will perform: Senior Choir, Senior Jazz Band, African Ensemble and Senior African Drumming. Boys must please be at school by 17h40 to warm up and tune. PRIDWIN JAZZ FESTIVAL – Sunday, 27 May: 11h30 – 16h30 Pridwin will be hosting our unique, fun-filled family event for the sixth time at our Venus Street Playing Fields. Please join us for a wonderful day of music and entertainment! TRINITY MUSIC EXAMS – Tuesday, 29 May The Trinity Music Exams will be taking place in the auditorium. The schedule will be sent out to the relevant boys with the Music Timetable this week. JOHANNESBURG FESTIVAL FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF MUSIC (EISTEDDFOD) – Monday, 28 May to Friday, 8 June The Johannesburg Festival for the Advancement of Music (eisteddfod) commences on Monday, 28 May. The events take place at Jan Celliers Laerskool. A list of times and dates for the individual events will be sent out today. Please note that Pridwin WILL NOT be providing transport to the individual events – it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that the boys are at the venue 20 minutes for the stipulated times. This session is dedicated to parents and is geared towards helping you to develop an awareness that will assist in raising our boys free of the dangers of addiction.
