Year 6 Transition FortnightMonday and Tuesday saw us host transition visits for our new Year 7 intake from Gorsey Bank Primary school and Alderley Edge Primary school. The students were welcomed by Mr Mackintosh and the Student Services team and

introduced to the Wilmslow Way and life at the High School.

Mr Schneider and Mrs Harris led the activities on the first day with a strong focus on character and leadership skills. Students took part in team building and communication activities which promoted the importance of grit, goodness and graft.

In the afternoon they enjoyed tours to learn about the site led by our Year 12 PE ambassadors followed by sessions in the LRC and with the Student Services team and our Year 7 primary transition ambassadors.

On Tuesday the students were met by the curriculum teams and completed a science investigation into the properties of Borax before the PE team introduced them to a range of sports activities. In the afternoon the students completed a carousel of activities, baking in the food technology area, practising team work and

Team Cogent were back together on Tuesday to compete for a place in the final of the Young Enterprise competition. The regional round took place at Sale Sharks AJ Bell Stadium.

After setting up the trade stands and undergoing the technical rehearsals the teams from seven schools across the Northwest were interviewed by the team of judges. The accounts in the company report were tested and questions of sustainability, ethics and retail management were answered. Hannah Steele, managing director and her team stood up well to the test and went on to give a professional performance to the audience on their year of enterprise.

The standard was high. We were particularly impressed by Urban MCR, from Altrincham

Grammar School for Boys whose tourist guide to Manchester wouldn’t have looked out of place in Waterstones. However, the winners were ‘Little Tree Books’ from Saint Edmund Arrowsmith in Ashton–in-

Makerfield, with their educational books targeting the 0-5 age range. We wish them well as representatives of the NorthWest in London.

The students presenting on Tuesday evening were Hannah Steele, Adam Leigh, Frazer Hunter, James Swarbrick and Matt Boyle,

supported on the night by Tom Connor, Emmanuel Hundeyin, Hugh Gosem, Ross Livingston, James Thompson and Jacob Pantling.

Now to come up with an idea for next year....!- Mrs J McHarg

So the Cogent Coaster journey is drawing to a close – There are still taxes to pay but the shareholders will see a good return on their investment which isn’t bad for a business in its first year of trading! As well as the obvious business competencies involved in sourcing products, marketing, sales and keeping accounts, this group of eighteen Year 12 students have developed their skills of communication, team working, accountability, resilience and more all of which will be very useful to them in the near future.

A huge thank you to Sally Harrison at Royal London and Alistair Jackson at Barclays for giving up their time as our business advisors and to Kieron Loynton at Ferrero Rocher for his sales and marketing input. Thanks also to Sophie Davis, MD of last year’s national finalist ‘What A Mug’ for all her support as enterprise mentor.

Thorngrove House CharityMrs Williams and Mr Hayley are pleased to announce they have sent a cheque for the sum of £1,790 to MIND. This was raised by all the students and staff in Thorngrove over a course of a year and is a magnificent achievement. Many thanks to those of you who supported our house charity, we are both immensely proud of you. Let’s hope we can match this and more to our new chosen charity, The Little Princess Trust, which was kick-started by Olivia Willett, T11EB, when she had her pony tail cut off and donated her hair for a wig.

Year 9 drama club performanceMembers of the Year 9 drama club performed their devised performance for Year 6 students on Tuesday afternoon. The drama club has been working extremely hard to create the performance which was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. The devised performance looked at different aspects of starting High School which can be daunting and showed the Year 6 audience what the reality of these worries were: getting lost, homework, behaviour points and making friends. The ‘expectation versus reality’ performance put the Year 6’s minds at rest and they were keen to ask further questions of what school life is like in Wilmslow High School.

Geography and CrimeOn Wednesday 15th June, PC Jane Commins visited the Year 8 Humanities lesson to help with students’ understanding of ‘Geography and Crime.’

PC Commins shared lots of facts with the class who had prepared questions about how to become a Police Officer, national and regional crime, local hotspots and the most common crimes that occur in Wilmslow.

The interactive presentation meant that all students were fully engaged throughout. They particularly enjoyed hearing about PC Commins’ personal experiences and the demonstrations of how she uses her equipment.

The Battle of the Somme rememberedJuly 1st 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme. The Battle, fought by the British in the middle of World War I, has become a byword for disaster. The carnage of the first day is now remembered as the worst day in British military history, and yet this horrific Battle went on to last for a further four-and-a-half months. To mark this historic milestone, an exhibition of artefacts and photographs will be on display at Wilmslow Library over the next few weeks.

Please help!We are collecting small tins of pringles and AZERA coffee for a textiles competition. The product has to fit in to a tubular tin that is the same size as a 40g Pringles snack tin or a 60g Nescafe Azera coffee tin. RugbyForty of our KS 3 students enjoyed a fantastic afternoon and evening of rugby at the AJ Bell stadium on Wednesday, taking in three games in the U20s World Cup which has been taking part in Manchester this month.

The students watched the Japan versus Argentina group game before putting their boots on and taking part in their own coaching session which was delivered by England RFU coaches. Following that, the boys went back into the stadium to watch two closely fought matches, the first saw Wales take on New Zealand and that was followed by the hosts, England, taking on Australia.

RoundersOur junior teams played rounders fixtures against Lymm High School on Wednesday. The U12 team won their game 7 ½ to 4 ½ and the U13 team won convincingly 15 ½ to 4 ½ .

CricketThe U13 cricket team played Stockport Grammar in the Cheshire cup on the same night. Batting first, Wilmslow scored 94 for 6, but this wasn’t enough as Stockport achieved this with the loss of 1 wicket. Not the best performance of the season, but it was pleasing to see another good innings from Callum Sherrington who scored 50 not out.

RugbyA small group of Year 7 and 8 girls attended a rugby festival at Broughton Park this week. The girls showed fantastic effort and commitment throughout the afternoon against some strong opposition. There were stand out performances from Lucie Darroch, Georgia Larsen and Georgia Robertson who, as well as playing well themselves, really supported some of our less experienced players.

WEEKEND ON THE CARRS

Saturday and Sunday18/19 JuneWilmslow is set to enjoy a fantastic weekend of free entertainment in the Carrs this weekend, courtesy of Wilmslow Town Council.

The Cinema on the Carrs is back for its second year, this time showing everyone’s favourite singalong film, ‘Grease’. There will be a movie-themed food court and a full bar available on the night, and people are encouraged to bring their friends and enjoy some good old-fashioned entertainment. Bring along your own seating – blankets and deckchairs are welcome, but please no gazebos or dogs; you could even bring along a picnic.

Gates open at 6pm on Saturday 18th June with the main feature being shown from 7-45pm. Get there early and secure your pitch. The event takes place near the Hawthorn Lane entrance to the Carrs and within easy walking distance from town centre car parks that are free after 6pm.

Sunday 19th JuneThe Party on the Carrs is back for its 5th year. With a host of community stalls, bouncy

castles, trampolines, sports clubs, street food and live musical entertainment, the event has become one of Wilmslow’s favourite fixtures of the summer. More details of the

participating music acts and community groups can be found on our Facebook page “Party on the Carrs”.

This year’s event, for the first time, sees sports clubs with WFA and Wilmslow Town FC, Everybody Leisure from the Leisure Centre, Bushido Ju-Jitsu and

Pownall Park Tennis Club offering demos and activities throughout the day. If you fancy trying the speed gun challenge to see how powerful your

kick is then this is the place to try it. It’s Father’s Day so why not bring Dad along and challenge him? Everybody Leisure will be bringing

their smoothie bike where you can make some healthy food at the same time as keeping fit and there will be demonstrations from

Bushido Ju-Jitsu during the afternoon.

Community Groups will also be offering competitions, tombolas and other activities and you can enjoy all of

these whilst listening to some fantastic music from various acts in the two musical performance areas.

The event runs from 12pm to 5pm and entry is free to all. For more information follow us on

Facebook “Party on the Carrs” and Twitter @partycarrs.

ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR AS WILMSLOW SHOW RETURNS FOR 104TH YEAR

With everything from live music and floral displays to craft stalls and arena events, this year will see, amongst others, magician Nick Barnes, Clown Shows, inflatable bumper cars and, of course the Cowboy Village. Andrew Van Buren will be performing some of his fantastic illusions and there will be plenty of action in the Arena with acts including the Falconry School, The Chesterfield Musketeers Showband and firm favourite Jema Leopold with her equestrian display.

Wilmslow Show is also proud to present the first ever Doggy Olympics. Paul Chilton has run the Barkers Dog Arena for the Wilmslow Show for several years and said “Every year we have a fun Dog Show, but this year I wanted to do something different. I’m not going to give away all the surprises, but I’d like to invite as many people as possible to come along with their dogs to take part in something pretty special.” If you think you and your dog have what it takes to go for gold then head down to the Dog Arena at 2.30pm.

Wilmslow’s very own hospital, HCA the Wilmslow Hospital, will be carrying out free mini health checks in their Wilmslow Show tent. They will also have a physiotherapist on hand to offer advice on how to keep active at work. Last year this proved to be very popular so make sure you get a chance to visit them.

To find out more follow Wilmslow Show on Twitter or Facebook and look out for leaflets with full details of timings and events which will be distributed in the town soon, as well as online.

Tickets are available on the gate, or you can buy tickets in advance at www.ticketsource.co.uk/the-wilmslow-show.

Family tickets for 2 adults and up to 3 children under 16 years are available at the reduced rate of £10 (£12 on the gate).

Frank McCarthy, Chairman of the Wilmslow Show Committee said,

”We’ve arranged a great show this year, with plenty of old favourites as well as lots of new events for Wilmslow residents and visitors

to enjoy. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the host of entertainment that we have lined up for you on 10th July. We look

forward to seeing you there.”

Next Friday 17th and Saturday 18th June there will be something strange and wonderful growing in Bank Square.

Wilmslow In Bloom, working with local artist Lorna Fellas, is creating a wonderful art installation as part of this year’s entry into the North West in Bloom competition – and everyone is invited to get involved.

Friday will see selected primary school children taking part in weaving and plaiting fabric and willow on to fencing to form a huge and beautiful floral sculpture. On Saturday, as well as visiting the Artisan Market, everyone is invited down to Bank Square to help complete the huge artwork which will represent this year’s entry theme of Butterflies and Bees.

Organisers have been busy collecting bright fabrics which can be incorporated into the work. If anyone would like to contribute any remnants – old sheets or shirts would be ideal – then please bring them along with you and see them woven into the design.

Local businesses have already started their planting as part of the project with the top of Grove Street already blooming, thanks to local school planters on display. Artwork is also popping up in business window displays as many schools have been creating their very own ‘Butterflies & Bees’ masterpieces to support the Wilmslow In Bloom theme.

Starting in 2012 Wilmslow has won Gold awards in the North West In Bloom competition for the past two years and is keen to repeat the success.

Lorna and the In Bloom team will be in Bank Square on Friday with invited school children and then on Saturday from 9.30am to 5pm when everyone is invited to come and join in the creative fun. You can follow Wilmslow in Bloom on Twitter @Wilmslow4Gold or on Facebook Edible Wilmslow in Bloom.

Ruth McNulty, Chair of the Wilmslow In Bloom committee

said, “ We’re very excited about this project. As well as

encouraging businesses to take part by joining in the planting,

we thought that this community artwork would really represent the spirit of In Bloom, as well as the creativity of Wilmslow

residents. Once it is complete it will be displayed in Bank Square

and then shown to the judges when they visit the town on

Friday 29th July.”
