Consumer Protection Act 1986
The Consumer Protection Act 1986 is intended to protectthe legitimate interests of the consumers.
The Act not only provides inexpensive & expeditiousremedies, but also arms the Forums constituted underthe Act with the power of enforcement of their orders bycoercive process by imposing imprisonment & fine.

District Forum
Set up by State Government in each district of the stateand shall consist of:
A person who is a qualified to be a District judge shall beits President.
A person of respect in the field of education, trade orcommerce.
A lady social worker.An appeal against its order can be filed before the StateCommission within a period of 30 days from the order.

State CommissionEstablished in each State by the respective StateGovernment and shall consist of:
A person who is a judge of High Court shall be itsPresident. Two other members who shall be persons of integrity,
ability and have experience of dealing with problemsrelating to economics, law, commerce, accountancy or
administration. One of them shall be woman.An appeal against its order can be filed before theNational Commission within 30 days from the date oforder.

National CommissionThe Central Government shall establish a NationalConsumer Disputes Redressal Commission which shall
consist of: A person who is a judge of the Supreme Court shall be a
President.
Four other members who shall be persons of ability,
integrity and have experience of dealing with problemsof economics, law, commerce, accountancy oradministration. One of them shall be a woman.
An appeal against its order can be filed in the SupremeCourt within the 30 days from the date of order.
