SAFETY • In 2016, 21.1% of worker fatalities were in construction.
Falls, electrocution, and getting struck by equipment accounted for more than half of deaths.
LABOR SHORTAGE • Through Q2 of 2018, more than
225,000 construction jobs went unfilled each month.
OPIOIDS • Opioids account for about 20% of total prescription
drug spend in construction. Across the Midwest, nearly
1,000 construction workers died from an opioid
overdose in 2015.
CONSTRUCTION LITIGATION • 75% of construction industry players experienced a construction defect claim in the past five years, with project
owners ranking defect claims as the most common and most expensive.
PRODUCTIVITY • Labor-productivity
growth for construction averaged 1% for the
past decade, compared to 2.8% for the total
economy and 3.6% for manufacturing alone.
SITE SECURITY • The National Equipment Register estimates the value of heavy equipment stolen each year between $300 million to $1 billion.
ROBOTS • NIOSH identified 61 robot-related deaths between 1992 and 2015 and predicts more fatalities as collaborative
robots grow more common on construction
worksites.
DRONES • The FAA settled with a drone photography company for $200,000 after alleging
it lacked proper registration. It will pay $150,000 more if it
violates the settlement. Drones are an emerging technology in construction.
CYBER • Ransomware attacks have doubled in the
past year. Construction companies will grow more
vulnerable as they adopt more technology.
AGING WORKFORCE • Construction workers aged 45 to 54 experienced the highest rate of musculoskeletal disorders and a median 20 days away from work. 45% of construction workers are 45 or older.
AUTO LIABILITY • In 2015, a work zone
crash occurred once every 5.4 minutes.
73% of crashes resulted in property damage, and
26% resulted in bodily injury.
