USBJI grant mentoring programThe United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) grant mentoring program provides early-career clin-ical investigators an opportunity to work with experienced researchers to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career. The program offers attendees the opportunity to maintain relation-ships with mentors until their ap-plication is funded.

The grant mentoring program is open to promising junior faculty,

senior fellows, or postdoctoral researchers nominated by their department or division chairs. It is also open to senior fellows or residents who are doing research and have a faculty appointment in place or confirmed. Basic and clinical investigators, without or with training awards (including K awards), are invited to apply.

Investigators selected to take part in the program will attend two workshops, 12 to18 months apart, and work with faculty between workshops to develop their grant applications.

The next workshop will take place Nov. 8–10, 2013, in Toronto, Canada. The deadline for applica-tions is July 15. For more informa-tion, visit www.usbji.org/rd/?yii

i t’s time to cast your ballots for individuals to serve on the 2014 AAOS Nominating Committee

and to decide whether to adopt or retain certain AAOS resolutions.

Once again, voting will be con-ducted primarily online. The vot-ing process is designed to be quick, secure, and confidential. You will be able to vote both for nominees to serve on the AAOS Nominating Committee and on the proposed resolutions at the same time.

Online voting processHere’s how the voting process works:• If you are eligible to vote and

have provided the AAOS with an email address, you should already have received a personal-ized email with your Member ID and a direct link to the voting site. Clicking on the link will take you directly to the balloting information.

• If you are eligible to vote and have not provided AAOS with an email address but have a fax number on file, you should have received a ballot and balloting information by fax.

• If you have not provided AAOS with an email address or fax number, you should have re-ceived a written ballot and back-ground information in the mail. The online voting site has in-

formation on each of the Fellows nominated to serve on the Nomi-nating Committee, as well as infor-mation on each of the resolutions, including the recommendations of the Board of Councilors (BOC), Board of Specialty Societies (BOS), Board of Directors, and AAOS Resolutions Committee.

The adoption of resolutions requires that at least 20 percent of the total Fellowship (approxi-mately 5,000 Active, Inactive, or Emeritus Fellows) must cast bal-lots. In addition, at least 50 percent of those voting must vote in favor of a resolution for adoption.

A valid election for the Nominat-ing Committee does not require a minimum number or percentage of Fellows to cast ballots. Those individuals who receive the highest number of votes will be elected to the Nominating Committee, pro-vided that no more than two are in practice in the same state.

Cast your ballot todaySeveral important resolutions are being considered this year. Nine AAOS resolutions have been re-viewed and, with some modifica-tions, are being recommended to be retained or rescinded.

Nineteen orthopaedic surgeons who were nominated during the Business Meeting held at the 2013 Annual Meeting are standing for

election to the 2014 AAOS Nomi-nating Committee (Table 1). Those six who are elected will serve with John J. Callaghan, MD, former AAOS president, who has been appointed by the Board of Direc-tors to chair the 2014 Nominating Committee.

Ballots must be submitted to the AAOS by Friday, May 24, 2013, to be counted. As a Fellow, you

help shape the future direction and work of the AAOS through your votes on resolutions and your se-lections for members of the Nomi-nating Committee. Take this op-portunity to vote online and be an involved member of the AAOS.

Richard N. Peterson, Jd, is general counsel for the aaos. he can be reached at [email protected]
