REVITALIZE ROOMS WITH COLOR

In this issue we took the challenge to kick up the volume in this charming midtown beige bungalow home. The owners wanted to liven up the living room and dining room with a splash of color, but being the parents of twins, retaining a relaxing environment was essential! So when they weren’t quite sure where to start, they gave us a call.

2012 seems to be the year of COLOR, so what better opportunity could we ask for to jump in with a splash! We hope you are inspired as well to take your room to the next level with color this summer.

Revitalize Rooms With Color(pictured above) We took the challenge to kick up the volume in this beige home. The owners wanted to liven up the living room and dining room, but still wanted a relaxing environment being the parents of twins! So they weren’t quite sure where to start.

Look for a pattern or favorite accessory to give you inspiration on a color scheme. When deciding on a color scheme commit to two to three main hues dispersed evenly throughout the room.

Set the MoodDecide the mood you want the room to embody. Do you want the room to evoke relaxation or boost your energy? Picture how you will use the room and go from there.

Test paint colorsChoosing paint colors for your home can be daunting and frustrating. We tried more than a few blue tones to get the perfect hue. Always test the color first, trim the window and corners of the wall to see how the light reflects the color in the room. Ask about LRV (light reflectance value) the higher it is the more light will bounce around the room, the lower it is the more the color will absorb light which will make the room seem moody.

We started with a very beige small living and dining room, but with lots of charm! This bungalow has an open floor plan, so the first plan of attack was to marry the living and dining room together with color. The dark solid wood columns and trim acted in our favor…being a beautiful contrast to the blue accent wall. We decided to create this as the focal point in the living room being that it was against the fireplace. Painting the inside of the bookcase shelves helped to bring your eye up to the mantel and bring more height to the blue wall overall. We painted the fireplace beige, distressing it a bit to help it blend in with the history of the home as well as bringing more light to the room.

Including neutrals in your color scheme help bold colors and patterns get along, grounding them in your home. We used neutrals in the furniture, introducing different textures like upholstered fabrics and leather. Using furniture as the vehicle for the neutrals allows us to break free with color in accessories, curtains and pillows. Allowing the client the ease of changing maybe for season or mood.

Lively accessories bring a cheerful and relaxing mood to this room, we used pops of red and orange to contrast against the soothing blue wall. Lighting can also make a huge difference in a room and effect the mood. Using lamps as accessories is so easy today with all the beautiful designs out there. We grabbed this translucent teal glass lamp from DC and placed it in the front window on top of a stunning antique marble side table, perfect for dropping your keys and mail on the way in.

Living it up!

We say you should always have a conversation piece in every room, why not a vintage fire hose reel painted high gloss red? This carries the color scheme across the room along with bold patterns in our pillows and curtains. Don’t forget the bookcases…they can easily bring color and tell a story about your home as well as being functional. The best tip for bringing a designer look to them is coordinating your book covers by color. This will give lively blocks of color in a snap. Accenting with colorful accessories you have collected at DC will also do the trick.

Baskets add texture and height to areas of a room, and are great for storage or tossing your magazines in.

We nestled this iron glass top side-table between the two occasional chairs to give function to the room without taking up visual space. An easy way to decorate a table and still have room for your latte is to stack some favorite colorful books with a few accessories on top in the center of the table.

Do you have a Fireplace that doesn’t work or isn’t used half of the year? Don’t let that black hole go to waste. Find some cheery plants or fill them up with books or a big basket of fire logs…just don’t forget to decorate it! We found some adorable knockoff vintage suitcases to stack inside.

The easiest and most eye-pleasing way to bring two rooms together is through color. Being that the dining room is beige we dressed up the walls with a bold pattern on the curtains introducing the blue from the living room into the dining room.

Break up a room of matchy-matchy and add a painted furniture piece to it. The gorgeous warm wood toned farm table compliments well with the butter cream painted sidebar. Again using a lamp as lighting and a beautiful accessory, we brought the blue tones a top our painted piece, and added some steel blue potted orange flowers. Don’t get stuck thinking “pictures” when clocks or metal ironwork can be even more exciting and bring depth to a room.

Another way to add interest and eclectic style is to mix and match your dining room set. Four or six of the same chair can get boring to the designing minded…try a couple of textured chairs like these sea grass parson chairs and throw in a bench, or mix it up with some upholstered chairs in complimenting colors, and you could even try painted chairs to partner up with the sidebar.

Dining In

Do you have a corner that is too small for furniture, but needs a lift? Try a few large pottery pieces or vases on the floor in several heights. The more colorful the better!

Wicker trays make excellent chargers and nestle all of your dining utensils in one organized space. A simple everyday vase of flowers or your favorite pottery piece would be the perfect addition to the center of your dining table. Just add Vino!

Speaking of Vino…Everyone needs a wine rack, right? Even if it is just for looks, these are great pieces to add to a lonely corner. Adding color with vibrant glassware, and in this case bringing a vintage galvanized milk tray to the wine rack helps bring the subtle blue tones in again.

Eclectic Dining

A kitchen nook is a perfect place to pop some color on the wall as well. Why not red to add a little spark to the room? The accessories from the preceding rooms will compliment this choice quite well. Small tables are extremely popular at Designer Consignment, probably because you can fit them just about anywhere. This small pub does the trick for a tight space. Throw an Asian inspired vase on top and you are ready for Pad Thai!

So if the task of choosing your color scheme makes you run the other way, just remember our simple tips and have fun with it…if you like something it will work in your home. Trust your instincts and create a home that is colorful and speaks to your heart. Man (or Woman) cannot live on beige alone!
