She studied Home Economics, then worked for companies like Sanyo Australia demonstrating Microwave cooking, Australian Meat & Livestock, J B Fairfax Publications, Tafe, Breville, Smeg and Cuisinart. Her work was product and recipe development for books and instruction manuals, food styling for photography, staff management and co-ordination, Food Editor and teaching, to name a few. Whilst Food Editor for Fairfax, Sheryle employed the then very young Donna Hay, as her junior Home Economist. So when next at the market, make sure you look out for her food, try some and say hello.

JUNE 3rd MARKETFrom My DeskIan Scandrett

The “Antique” and Brice-a-Brac MarketDay had plenty to look at, taste and enjoy.

The Men’s Shed had some uniquewooden craft, with prices affordable for thequality of workmanship. One such item, thepet feeding table raised a few eyebrows.

Thanks to the Berrima District OldMachinery Club members for bringing alongtheir four tractors — Bruce, Terry, Bruce andAlan (1964 Massey Ferguson, 1963 FordsonDexta, 1950 Howard, 1954 Ferguson). A lotof questions were being asked and the boysgave well informed answers.

Lots of interesting stall goodies includingthe car and truck models, and our talentedchef Sheryle’s delicious gourmet food madethe day even better.

The BBQ menu items of bacon, egg andsausage, on the new “bread and butter”sandwiches went very quickly, and thebutter made all the difference ... yum.

MY IMPRESSIONS by (Richard) Henri Lowe

Life for a kid growing up seemed simplewith plenty of time to play and get intotrouble. Responsibilities and chores came alittle later in life. Entertainment was selfgenerated. Boys would play by making upgames. These consisted of buildings roadsin the dirt and pretending to be drivingtrucks. TV was non-existent and radiodelivered news and comedy. However thiswould involve frequent recharging of a wetcell battery in Mittagong, a somewhatdifficult task without a vehicle, and when thebattery was flat you had no radio.

Family entertainment was often a cardgame on a Saturday night when theneighbours would visit. There was noelectricity until the 1950’s, lighting was awhite spirit lamp over the dining room tablewhich was pulled down when it neededpumping up and then pushed up again.

During the teenage years a Saturdaynight bus service to Colo Vale would conveythe local youth and some adults to theBowral Cinema. Dances were occasionallyheld at Aylmerton Public School and werewell attended.

One of my delights was to cycle to Pike’sstore and wait for the rare occasion when amotorist would call in to purchase petrol. Todispense fuel at this bowser, the motoristwould have to manually pump the petrolinto an elevated cylindrical container whichwas surrounded by a diamond patternedsteel mesh. Having reached the desiredvolume of fuel as indicated by the markingson the side of the glass (similar to a raingauge but larger) it would be dischargedinto the vehicle’s fuel tank though a hoseand nozzle similar to that used today. Thisactivity always intrigued my curiosity.

GARDEN TIPS with George

So many flowering shrubs that are attheir magnificent best right now areCamellias. Camellias were introduced toEurope about 220 years ago from the FarEast. Today there are about 100 knownspecies which have been cultivated in ourgardens, of these only 3 are usually foundin Australian gardens.

First to flower is Camellia Sasanqua inlate autumn and early winter, CamelliaJaponica flowers in winter to spring, asdoes Camellia Reticulata which has verylarge showy blooms. They are generallyfrost resistant and prefer acid conditionsbut will tolerate neutral soils.

The blooms come in white, pink andred and a few varieties are yellow or bi-coloured and they size from miniature6.5mm to very large over 130mm in 4major flower forms. 1. Single – shallow cup shaped flowerswith no more than 8 petals in a single rowand a conspicuous central boss ofstamens. 2. Semi double – cup shaped flowerseach have 2 or more rows of 9 to 21regular or irregular petals andconspicuous stamens. 3. Informal double – double domedflowers which usually have irregular petalsand petioles with stamens. 4. Formal double – has rounded flowershaving many rows of regular overlappingpetals that hide the stamens.

A Camellia in your garden is a splashof colour on a dreary winter’s day.

Happy gardening everyone, ‘til nexttime, George.
