Work in pairs/small groups. Read the following sentences. Then fill in the gaps in the rules with the underlined words. 1. The King found his wife with another

man so he killed her.

2. The King killed his wife because he found her with another man.

3. While the King was drinking with his friends, Shahrazad went to find her sister.

4. Shahrazad was getting ready for bed when her sister came to visit her.

5. The King asked her to finish, but Shahrazad said there was not time.

6. The King never heard the end of a story until the next evening.

7. Although Shahrazad is waiting to be executed, she has no “death row" syndrome.

The difference between although /ɔ:l’ðəʊ/ and but

1. Ron went for a walk although it was raining.

2. We didn’t like the food but we ate it.

3. Although he has a good job, Matt is not happy.

4. Ron likes tea, but Tim likes coffee.

5. She wasn’t wearing a coat although it was quite cold.

6. Anna’s very intelligent, but she’s quite lazy.

It joins 2 ideas when the second idea is different from the first one, or is surprising after the first one.

It introduces an idea that makes your main idea seem surprising.
