Remember Ramadan Wondering why your students are dozing off in class? Isn’t there something missing outside of Heckart and Reed Lodges...like throngs of students standing around smoking, for example? Well, don’t forget! It’s still Ramadan.

The second week of Ramadan continues the daily fasts for many of our students. Not only do they refrain from eating food, they also refrain from drinking anything (including water).

If you don’t celebrate Ramadan, try to avoid drinking or eating in front of people who may be fasting. One of the key principles behind fasting is to have compassion for those less fortunate. Even if you don’t celebrate Ramadan by fasting, compassion is a universal virtue!

Most of the activities that I normally do, I cannot do during Ramadan. After sunset, I can eat and drink. Actually it is more difficult to not drink!

During Ramadan I think about poor people—how they live and how they cannot eat all day. We can eat after sunset, but maybe they cannot eat after sunset. I think about poor people and I think of Allah more. It’s really different celebrating here instead of at home. At home, all the stores are open until 3 or 4 am during Ramadan. Here, we have to prepare ahead of time because it is hard to find stores that are open. What do I want people to know about Ramadan? I would like them to try fasting. Just try it! <laughing>
