Several years ago we were on holiday in Crete and woke up on the last morning to a power cut and torrential weather. The coach eventually arrived for the 2 hour journey to the airport and we found that our problems paled into insignificance to those who were on remote islands and the boats could not get to them because of the high seas.

When we reached the airport it was closed due to the weather! However we did eventually take off and climbed through about 30,000 feet of cloud until we eventually reached a clear blue sky.

It occurred to me at the time that this was a bit like life. Sometimes it is difficult to “see the wood for the trees” but as times goes by life often does get better.

It is sometimes difficult to remember that when the weather is dreadful as it has been for some time now that above the cloud the sun is shining.

We are fast approaching Armistice Day and Remembrance Day. Often a very difficult time for many people.

It is very difficult for those who have lost loved ones in all the conflicts and memories run deep.

In 2 Corinthians 12: 7 - 9 the Apostle Paul talks of a “thorn in the flesh “No one really knows what it was but it was obviously a real burden to him.

He pleaded three times with the Lord for it to be taken away but the Lord said to him “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” The Greek word for Power is the same as our word for dynamite.

This is the power the Lord gives to each one of us when we ask Him. Problems are supposed to strengthen our faith and at times it is difficult see how this can be but if we remember the illustration I used at the beginning, when problem occur we can claim the power that comes from the Lord.

This is never easy but something we all need to learn. He is there all the time but sometimes we move away from Him and we need to learn how to walk closely all time.

Torver Community Carol Service and Meal

Put it in your diary now! A lovely Festive evening starts with a traditional Carol Service in St. Luke’s church, followed by a hot meal for everyone in the Old Schoolroom. Last year Father Christmas came but we haven’t sent him our letter yet, so it will be a surprise for everyone! If you would like to bring a savoury or sweet dish it would make the meal a banquet and most appreciated…but not essential. It will also be the evening that we draw the 100 Club numbers, so if you haven’t got yours yet, be sure to call Hazel Bowness on 01539431869 before the evening and you might be a ‘winner’ on the night! It’s a great Christmas gift too if you are struggling for ideas, only £25 for the year and half goes to maintaining the Schoolroom, half in prizes. It would be great to have 100 members…could you be the 100

th?

Now that would be something to celebrate!

Greek Dancing at The 100 Club!

September 23rd

. created many happy memories for us all as local residents George and Sarah Stergiakis hosted the 100 Club village social with a wonderful Greek ‘taster’ evening. A specially prepared and sourced Greek buffet was a very ‘tasty’ focus for the evening along with a quiz, music and some well-rehearsed and instructed Greek dancing! The evening was a great success and enjoyed by locals, friends, guests and….young people! You can’t get much better than that! huge thanks to Sarah and George. Their evening raised £95 which l goes towards the maintenance of the Schoolroom. Thank you to everyone who came, gave raffle prizes, bought 100 Club numbers and enjoyed supporting this regular event. September’s 100 Club Prize Winners were:

£50 H&J Lace. £30 J. Aicheson. £20x3, J. Hadwin, M. Brackwell, T. Raven. £15x2 R&A Inman, D. Adams. £10x5 L. Askwith, F. Mavers, A.McClusky, H. Bowness, N.Monk.

In The Reading Room Coniston at 6pm.

The format for ‘Winter’ Café Church in the Reading Room, Coniston Institute is changing slightly. We will start at 6pm with worship followed by the invited speaker’s talk about their faith journey, or specific encounter with God that changed their life. This will be followed by a hot supper and enjoying sharing the time together. The evenings are welcoming and inclusive for all, whether you are a church goer or not. It is so encouraging to hear real examples of how God impacts individual lives today in all the circumstances we meet as we journey through life. If you have never been, do come along. Café Church is always on the 4

This Month Alex Stewart from Coniston Christian Fellowship is speaking. He and his wife Ruth, now living in Coniston, have an incredible story to share from their life and time running a remote General Practice Medical Clinic in the wilds of the Himalayas. 6pm.Sunday 26

Coming of Age: Ruskin’s Drawings from the 1840-41 Tour Ruskin, aged 21, travelled with his parents through France and Italy on a tour lasting from September 1840 to June 1841. Working their way along the coast of Italy through Genoa, Florence and Pisa they spent December in Rome before moving on to Naples early in January 1841. The return journey took them via Rome in March to Florence and Venice, and back through France. Using the young Ruskin’s spectacular drawings, this exhibition provides a vivid visual account of the Ruskin family’s travels. Message from Jim and Julie: As we are retiring from the Ship Inn, we will be having “a bit of a do” (buffet!) on Friday 27

th October to which All are invited. See you there!

A new Captain is taking over “The Ship Inn” Bowmanstead (Coniston) On 2nd November 2017 a couple who have been The Ship Inn’s patrons for decades and are now making the move behind the bar.

The Ship’s New Captain, Jean Sullivan, who has a career history in Leisure, Sport and Education, said: “As an outdoor loving family, with six grown up children, we’ve been coming to Coniston for over 20 years, and we have always loved this pub. It’s not just any pub, it’s got a great family feel and I can’t quite believe that The Ship Inn is now ours to develop and run.”

The Ship’s First Mate: Peter Adamson an Engineer by trade explained “What we love about The Ship Inn is it has a solid reputation with ‘in-the-know’ explorers and campers, as one of the finest places for eating and drinking in Coniston. The background music varies between old school disco to hip hop and everything in between, open 7 days a week 'til the wee hours at weekends, you might even see yourself tapping your toes or moving the tables for a dance.

There is a quiet excitement in the air from the current Ship Crew Members: Chef Tony, barmen Luke and Finn and waiting staff, who are all staying on board. The only addition to the team with Jean and Peter is Millie, a very friendly King Charles Cavalier who will welcome you with a paw on the promise of a treat.

Oxfam

We are a wonderful, dedicated team, but are so sparse in numbers that we find ourselves having to close on a regular basis & are in danger of closing permanently. Can you help us to stay open? We would love to meet you – volunteering is a great way to make new friends, have a break from the day-to-day, to learn new skills & to share your own personal knowledge & experiences with others. It looks great on a CV & can be so rewarding. There are so many things we need help with including social media, volunteer recruitment, community engagement & marketing as well as window dressing, working on the shop floor, the till & the sorting & pricing of the vast range of donated goods that we get in. Mothers’ Union Report Following the national theme of ‘Communication’ for this year, the speaker for our September 28

th meeting was Janice Eadington on

‘Open the Book’. She began by explaining how it worked and how they became involved and the schools they visit. This was followed by a dramatised version of the story of Moses and the Burning Bush with props (a burning bush, snake etc.), costumes and six members of the Open the Book team talking and acting the parts with Coniston members being given Sheep masks to wear! The language was simple with explanations suitable for primary aged children to understand. We could do with some men to help us do it in Coniston Primary school, any offers? Also following the Theme of Communication the speaker for our October 19

th meeting is Prof. Sheila Crispin on ‘Communication

in the Animal World’. All animal lovers are welcome as it is going to be an interactive session! No computer or slides just, Sheila and animals.

I’ve just started a new job with an auto-enrolment pension. Do I have to join the scheme? I’m worried about meeting my living costs if I do.

Even if retirement is a long way off, or you feel you can't afford it, it’s still worth starting a pension. It can offer you financial security once you’ve stopped working and it's good value for money as your contribution gets topped up by both your employer and the government.

If you’re worried that auto-enrolment will make it harder for you to keep up with your living costs, ask your employer how much your monthly contribution will be and work out whether you really can't manage to pay it. Also check if you can claim tax credits or benefits, like Universal Credit. If you do decide to opt out, you’ll need to tell your employer, because you will be automatically signed up to auto-enrolment. Make sure you do this within one month to get a refund on the contribution you’ve made.

Over the past year, I have been getting into debt as my wages don't keep pace with inflation. Every time I reach my credit card limit, the company increases it automatically. At first I thought this was wonderful but now I can't see how I will ever repay it. What can I do?

Citizens Advice have found that many people are in your situation – irresponsible credit card lenders are pushing people further into the red by raising their credit limit without checking their ability to repay it. It’s really important that anyone who is struggling to pay off their credit card seeks debt advice as soon as possible. Citizens Advice can help you to work out the best way to manage your finances and strategies for repaying your debt. They can also help you to maximise your income, including any benefits or tax credits you may be entitled to. If you feel you are entering into a credit card debt spiral, get help as soon as you can.

Free, confidential advice and help is available from South Lakes Citizens Advice on any aspect of debt, consumer problems, benefits, housing, employment or any other problems. We have various outlets across South Lakeland and can also give advice over the phone – telephone 03444 111 444 for an appointment and help, 015394 46464 for debt and on-going enquiries. Coniston Fireworks Committee

Thank you to those who were able to attend the Quiz Night at the Yewdale in support of our community bonfire and fireworks display.

Although small in numbers a great time was had by all, Jeff was a first class quiz master and the complimentary half time pizza and chips were delicious. Our grateful thanks to Jeff and Susie who ‘topped up’ the money raised on the night to £100!.

We are also grateful to those who could not come on the night but have supported the event with donations, total at the moment stands at £198.55.

We have also applied to the Parish Council for a grant towards this community event, which will be awarded in November.

All our buckets and posters are out in Coniston and surrounding area’s, we just hope the weather is kind to us on the night.

To everyone who has helped with this year’s event a big thank you from us all, we couldn’t do it without our volunteer helpers.

1st Hawkshead Brownie and Friends Shoebox Appeal.

Thank you so much to all those people who have been working hard to provide a first Christmas gift for a child in Romania. There have been lovely hats, scarves, mittens, glove puppets, and rag dolls made on a chain around the village. I am looking forward to going out to deliver our shoeboxes on the 11th December for a week. This time they are going to the Carpathian mountain region. If you would like to sponsor a box or send some things then please just drop anything off at Oaklands Guest House on Yewdale road, I know the excitement it will bring to a child that has nothing. Also both schools are taking part so parents please have a look at your children's toys and see if some are suitable for a box and make one up and hand it in. The packing of the boxes is on 20th Nov - 22nd, from 1p.m. on the 20th and 11am the other days. Everyone is welcome to come along and help. I have organised free parking so get in touch if you are coming. 015394 41245, or email [email protected]
