PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEDear fellow members,

I am one of two Jews in an office of 450 employees. Every year, when I leave for my two days off of Rosh Hashana, my colleagues wish me

a happy New Year and lots of good partying and every year, I explain to them AGAIN that Rosh Hashana is NOT a New Year’s Eve bacchanal. Through the years of attempting to verbalize the experience of the high holidays to my mostly lapsed Catholic colleagues, I have to come to appreciate how lucky we are for the contemplation and stock-taking of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. We get three days every year that are off-line (if we can resist) and off the calendar. It’s just yom tov. When I go on and on about repentance and my Rosh Hashana lunch menu to those of my co-workers who are interested, the conversation inevitably ends with envy and hunger for an annual re-boot of their own.

As I float along the familiar words and melodies of the high holiday service, I mull over the year that has ended, make lists

of apologies I should give to those I have wronged (sometimes I even give them) and decide what I will change in the new year. When we leave the shul after ne’ilah, I feel like I have cleared away the unnecessary debris and regret within myself so that I can proceed into the New Year a bit more true, real and “me” than the Jodi who walked in at Rosh Hashana.

I hope that our coming-together for the high holidays can allow us as a community to take Rabbi Ron`s 40-year legacy with us into the new year as we chant the prayers that he chose for our mahzor to the tune of so many nigunnim that make us all think of him. We will learn new melodies from Rabbi Boris (that will likely include some yai-da-dais) and do different readings and hear about his vision for programming and for going forward. And I hope that when we leave the shul after ne’ilah, we will feel enriched by our past, excited about our future and so grateful for these high holidays which allow us to just be present.Shana tova u’metukah!!!

RABBI’S MESSAGESo much of Jewish life, from the daily rituals to the holidays, is about marking transitions. Lighting the Shabbat candles on Friday nights marks the end of the work week as we enter the day of rest, and Havdalah takes us out with sweetness. A mezuzah

separates the safety and comfort of our home from the mystery and challenges which occur outside, and ensures that all of these moments are filled with blessings. The cycle of the calendar, the cycle of life, and the pain of death. Judaism reminds us above all to be mindful of the moments that we encounter in our lives and move ahead with compassion.

This New Year marks an important time of transition in our community. I proudly join Dorshei Emet as your new rabbi even as we remember the life and legacy of Rabbi Ron and all that he brought through his many years of devoted service. Like so many others, I am working to gather the stories, experiences and history of this synagogue so that we can hold the past even as we move ahead and look towards our future. This New Year celebrates new opportunities.

As we know, the High Holidays are a time of intense spiritual power. From the focused prayer and learning to the simple connection with each other and our traditions, we have many opportunities for reflection and healing. Yet, regardless of where you place yourselves on the spectrum of faith, I hope that our

community has a place where you can, above all, feel a sense of belonging. Your unique path, your unique story has a place in Dorshei Emet.

As you will see in the calendar for the next few months we have expanded our programming to include more activities and learning for all ages, from the “regulars” to the unaffiliated Jews who may not even know about the wonderful blessings we can offer. As we have always done, we hope to open our doors to all those who are seeking, wherever they find themselves on their Jewish journey.

Through community, we can use the holy space we create to discuss the tough topics that confront us, to learn from each other’s experiences and expand our outlook. We can pray together, and sing together. We can have fun and celebrate, and support each other through times of pain and challenge. As we enter the New Year, I hope you will join in this journey of exploration and take advantage of the doors which are open to you and to all who are searching for connection and community.

Sarah and I wish you a sweet New Year filled with joy, and prayers for a world of ever growing peace.

ROGeR ANteBI – HAtAN tORAH 5777When Roger Antebi and his wife, Sari, joined the Dorshei Emet community in 2006, while looking for a place for their daughter Lara to become a Bat Mitzvah (son Jonathan’s Bar Mitzvah was celebrated soon after), Roger got much more than he bargained for! He was looking for a shul, and gained a community!

Having been unaffiliated with a congregation since his own Bar Mitzvah, Roger welcomed Rabbi Ron’s suggestion of trying out our Shabbat service. Not long afterward, he was heading up north to a retreat at Camp B’nai Brith. Before long, he was part of the Rabbi’s spiritual “Bakol” program. By that point, it was clear that Roger had found his spiritual home.

Roger served 8 years on Dorshei Emet’s Board in various capacities such as Cemetery Chair and the more visible role of Head Parnass. He has also served on the board of Eternal Gardens Cemetery as Treasurer and, for the past 4 years, as President. Roger is a graduate of the Institute of Jewish Spirituality’s 18-month “Kivvun” program.

Roger is active in participating, coordinating and rounding up the “minyanaires” for the weekly Wednesday meditation minyan, and is a regular Shabbat attendee. On Shabbat throughout the year, he never fails to greet you with his warm smile! For all of these reasons and so much more, it is our great pleasure to honour Roger as Hatan Torah.

pAtRIZIA DI CORI – KALLAt BeReISHIt 5777When Patrizia alighted at Dorshei Emet, it was to explore and feel a deeper connection to her Jewish heritage, but with her talent and professional flair as a chef, she was quickly called upon to cater our simchas and Synagogue events. Patrizia transformed our kitchen into a hub of creativity, warmth and hospitality.

Patrizia’s warm smile and encouraging manner instantly endeared her to everyone who met her. She swiftly earned a circle of friends and admirers.

Patrizia puts her heart and soul into every event, tailoring it to individual personalities, tastes and budgets. Her sensitivity is appreciated and praised. She has contributed so much to so many of our joyous lifecycle events, to our yearly Simchat Torah dinners and to our stupendous Jubilee celebration. Recently, our Pre-B’nei kids have had fun participating in a Top-Chef evening, with Patrizia guiding and encouraging them. She has also been there for us in sad times, taking charge and offering us the comfort of her food and friendship. Her life-force invigorates us and her delectable dishes nourish us. It is therefore with great pleasure that we honour our treasured friend, Patrizia Di Cori.

CHANGE OF DATE!

TOWN HALL ON INTERFAITH MARRIAGE

Sunday, Oct 30 @ 7pmThe time has come to explore the values-driven question of officiating interfaith

marriages within our synagogue. Reconstructionism encourages the welcoming

of interfaith couples and families and we wish to explore this question as a

community.

Join us for a respectful dialogue on this important topic to help us fine-tune

Dorshei Emet’s direction into the future.

This is the first meeting of many. The final decision will be guided by our voices

along with that of Rabbi Boris.

Your participation matters!

Noah Dayan-Mandelker May 14, 2016 / 6 Iyar 5776 Noah is the son of Joelle Dayan and Harvey Mandelker. He is a student at Summit School. Since he was 2 years old he has had a great love for singing and listening to music. He spends many hours singing in his bedroom, and particularly enjoys the melodies that he has learned by coming to synagogue on Shabbat on a weekly basis. He dreams of one day becoming the cantor of our synagogue! Noah has made many wonderful friends in this community and feels that the Dorshei Emet community is part of his family. For his Bar Mitzvah project, Noah connected his passion for firemen with a crafts oriented creation of the various Judaica artifacts that display candles.

Jonah Rosen May 21, 2016 /13 Iyar 5776 Jonah is the son of Hillel Rosen and Liane Feldman. He is fascinated by politics and current events and is always happy to discuss the latest goings-on. Jonah is a busy hockey player and skier, yet he still finds time for reading, piano and friends. Jonah has been volunteering at the NDG Food Depot and organized the donation of non- perishable food items as part of his Bar Mitzvah Project.

Ben Regenstreif September 3, 2016 / 30 Av 5776 Ben is the son and step-son of Barbara Szeicz and Avi Gomberg. A graduate of JPPS, Ben enjoys student life at Bialik High School. Ben loves soccer and is a devoted fan of Manchester United Soccer team. He also enjoys music and plays the electric guitar. Ben visited Israel last year, and used his Bar Mitzvah project to explore the connections between socialism and Judaism as lived on Israeli Kibbutzim. Sadly missed on this occasion was Ben’s father, the late Alan Regenstreif.

Geva Bitton-Yarosky June 18, 2016 / 12 Sivan 5776 Geva is the son of Ronit Yarosky. He loves drama and improv and has been part of a theatre school for a few years. He also loves nature and his summer camp, which he feels brings out his best qualities. But the one quality that most exemplifies Geva is compassion. He is truly caring, always concerned about the well-being of the world and all the people who inhabit it. In Geva’s parasha, we encounter a lot of rituals, some of which are quite antiquated. Geva questioned their relevance to him, and he spoke with a few young men from around the world about their own rituals. One of these conversations was with an Indigenous (Assiniboine Cree) activist, who made us both recognize that perhaps the most important thing about our rites of passage and this Bar Mitzvah is how privileged and fortunate we are to be able to celebrate it.

Fay Gomberg August 20, 2016 / 16 Av 5776 Fay is the daughter of Elizabeth Dannenbaum and Peter Gomberg. She attends Collège de Montréal and Kineret summer camp. She’s an avid hiker, canoeist and cross-country skier. As part of her bat mitzvah project, Fay collected used eye glasses to donate to Optometrists Without Borders. (If anyone has used eye glasses, please contact Fay’s parents.)

For his bar mitzvah project, Henry interviewed his uncle, Aaron Mitnick, about what Judaism means to him and about his spiritual journey to becoming a rabbi in Israel.

Erin Gould September 24, 2016 / 21 Elul 5776 Daughter of Cindy Sherwin and Jon Gould. Erin attends Collège de Montréal. She is a strong and enthusiastic student with a talent for languages, which helped her make the daunting transition to a French school with ease. Erin has many passions and hobbies. She takes ballet classes, was in Glee and continues to sing, and is an avid reader. She is also very creative and pursues a variety of art projects in her free time. For her bat-mitzvah project, Erin is making Rosh Hashanna cards to sell, to donate the funds to the Art Therapy program at the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
