President’s Perspective . . . Attending Shabbat services this past weekend (in mid-July) reminded me how blessed we are to have such tre-mendously gifted and involved members. Ron Nevelow expertly led Friday evening services for the first time. If you’ve been on Zoom for Kabbalat Shabbat services this past year, you’ve probably seen him, along with Bruce Katz, Matt Kurtzman, Stuart Rosenfield, and other mem-bers of Kol Rina who routinely lend their voices to our weekly services. On Shabbat morning, we heard from Bob Massarella, who presented an educational and insightful commentary on the weekly Parsha (D’varim). He’s one of several folks, including Andy Farkas, Mark Heidenheimer, Jacob Rat-ner, and others, who pitch in during the summer months to give our rabbis a little break. It’s a shame that attend-ance tends to be lower at this time of year because it’s an excellent opportunity to hear different perspectives and appreciate our members’ many talents.
As the High Holy Day season approaches, I encourage you to join us for services, whether in-person or online. You may not realize that we’ve begun serving Kiddush lunches again on Shabbat mornings. Our talented kitchen staff always has something unique and delicious pre-pared. It’s just one more reason (albeit not the primary one) for venturing out and spending time praying and learning with your Anshai brethren. Speaking of High Holidays, I’m told that Kol Rina has some surprises in store for us. I’m sure we’ll all find out more soon. Enjoy the rest of your summer, keep cool, stay safe, and I look forward to seeing ALL of you soon! Dan
Our High Holy Day mailing was sent out the week of July 19. Tickets, as well as the schedule for all services were included if your membership was renewed for 2021-22. Subsequently, as people have been renewing their member-ship, we have been sending out tickets. If you have NOT yet renewed your membership, tickets were not included in your letter. Once you renew, tickets will be mailed to you. High Holy Day forms will be online this year rather than mailed to each home. Forms for ordering challah, lulav/etrog, participation in babysitting/youth services and listings in the Yizkor book are all available at www.anshaitorah.org (on the home page). Each form has its own deadline. We ask that you take time to fill out the forms of interest, paying attention to the deadlines. One deadline we want to stress is participation in the Yizkor book. The absolute deadline for submissions is Fri-day, August 6. All who participated last year have already received an email with a request regarding this year's book. While we want everyone who would like to participate to be able to do so, the deadlines for print and delivery prohibit us from accepting submissions past August 6. Please do not wait, go online and fill out all High Holy Day forms now. . . Or email [email protected] for the Yizkor Book submission.

CONGREGATION ANSHAI TORAH CHAI MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM
The Anshai Torah Chai Membership Program is a critical component of our shul. This past year, our Chai program was especially important, given the pandemic, and the economic challenges that many have endured. We are grateful to the 74 families who have paid tiered levels of pre-mium dues annually so that we could offer Anshai membership to all, regardless of ability to pay. The entire Anshai Torah family would like to acknowledge our Chai members for your generous participation in this program. You provided Anshai Torah the opportunity to fulfill the mitzvah of hachnassat orechim, the welcoming of all guests. Chai members enable all to join and feel welcome. Thank you to the following families, who represent our 2020-21 Chai membership:

Financial situations sometimes preclude congregants from being able to make full financial commitments for member-ship dues. Anshai Torah takes pride in welcoming all who wish to become part of our family. Our Chai Membership Program helps to bridge the gap. All of our members have the option to participate at a Chai Membership level above your annual dues that helps subsidize the dues of individuals who are unable to make a full financial commitment for a given year. When members pay dues as Chai members, they know that they are directly helping those who cannot. Chai members are recognized on a beautiful, dedicated display located at our sanctuary entrance, in the Kol Emet throughout the year, and at an annual Chai Membership event. To all of our congregants, as you complete your membership forms, please consider some level of Chai and know that you are having a direct impact on our entire membership. Thank you to all of our members for your commitment to Anshai Torah.

Join us on August 18 for a virtual Dallas Holocaust Museum Program via ZOOM The Book Smugglers, Partisans, Poets and the Race to Save Jewish Treasures from the Nazis by David E. Fishman, BA, Yeshiva University; MA and PhD, Harvard University, professor of Jewish History at The Jewish Theological Semi-nary, teaching courses in modern Jewish history. The Book Smugglers is the nearly unbelievable true story of ghetto residents who rescued thousands of rare books and manuscripts―first from the Nazis and then from the Soviets―by hiding them on their bodies, burying them in bunkers, and smuggling them across borders. It is a tale of heroism and resistance, of friendship and romance, and of unwaver-ing devotion―including the readiness to risk one’s life for literature and art.
Upcoming programs — Monday, October 11 - Time TBD – Very Special Program – STAY TUNED Thursday, November 11, 1 pm, Veteran’s Day Program @ Anshai & YouTube. Be sure to join us December 11 at 9:30am for a special Hazak Shabbat. Hazak hosts a Shabbat service each year with a memorable experience. This service will be live and on You Tube.
If you know of someone who needs a little sunshine in their life, please contact Sandy Crook or Risa Diamond.
Please join Hazak in collecting food for Project Isaiah. This is an annual food drive collection on the evening of Kol Nidre. Hazak will have boxes in front of the shul for the canned food collection. Just bring a can or two, a box of cereal, or a jar of peanut butter to help those in need of food.
Albert Joseph Torkiya will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Shabbat morn-ing, August 21. Albert is the son of Edith Torkiya and Adi Torkiya and brother to Emily. He is the grandson of Vivian Torkiya, who lives in Israel, and Celia Esquenazi in Dallas. His grandfathers, Pepe Esquenazi z’l and Albert Torkiya z’l would be so incredibly proud of Albert celebrating his Bar Mitzvah.
Albert is an 8th grade student at Celina Junior High School. He loves to fish and is on the Bass Fishing Team at his school. He also enjoys chess and recently placed first in his UIL region for chess puzzles. Additionally, Albert loves to build and work with his hands and received a STEM award at the end of the school year for his critical thinking and creative problem solving skills. Most of all, Albert has a passion for baseball, which he plays year round. We would like to thank Albert’s tutor, Sherri Massarella, for her patience and dedication in helping prepare Albert for his Bar Mitzvah. Also, thank you to Rabbis Weinberg and Kushnick for their continued guidance and support. We are so incredibly proud of Albert for being a kind and thoughtful friend to all and we look forward to sharing this day with family, friends and the Anshai Torah community.

writes notes to recognize milestones and acknowledges losses
makes phone calls to check on your progress
welcomes new babies and grandbabies with an Anshai baby bib

We are thrilled to welcome our new CATS in College families! We hope everyone had a safe and fun summer!
WHAT IS CATS IN COLLEGE? Our CATS in College committee connects our students to Anshai Torah while they are in college, graduate school, law school, medical school, or any higher education institution, and we also proudly send packages to those young adults in the military who have chosen to serve our coun-try post college. Some examples of how we have done that in the past is by sending holiday care packages, finals-time Starbucks gift cards, shalach manot baskets, and birthday wishes.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? It is free of charge to children of Anshai Torah members.
WHAT SHOULD I DO SO MY KID IS INCLUDED? In order for your students to be included, please email all their information to [email protected] and be sure to update and verify mailing addresses. If you know your student will have a change-of-address or graduate during the school year, please email us to let us know.
HOW CAN I DONATE TO THIS GREAT PROGRAM? A CATs in College Fund has been established at Anshai Torah. Please consider being a CATS in College Sponsor for this school year to support this very important program. Sponsorship levels are below, however, donations of any amount are welcome. To make your donation, please go to the shul website at https://www.anshaitorah.org. Or you can e-mail us your selected level or donation amount at [email protected] and the shul office will coordi-nate with you.
$ 54 Freshman $ 100 Sophomore $ 180 Junior $ 360 Senior $ 540 Salutatorian $1,000 Valedictorian
Thank you to ALL of the sponsors who have helped make this happen! (these names are as of 7/14/21)
If you are an artist or know someone who is, TJAA supports their members by fostering camaraderie, offering educational and social programming and bringing artists’ work to the public through various opportunities and lo-cations around the metroplex. Member artists are featured at Dallas Love Field in glass cases enroute to bag-gage claim, including sculptures, paintings, photography and other creative arts. The Dallas Jewish Federation will also display member art on a rotating basis in their new building. Art at both locations will be available for pur-chase at the end of their rotating exhibits. Please visit their website at www.texasjewisharts.org or email President Nan Phillips at [email protected] for more information or to become a member.

Before COVID began last year, we had established our ‘Mazal Tov’ notes each month. We had numerous comments and compliments about how nice it is to share good news with our Anshai Torah family. . . Please help us re-start this ‘sharing of good news.’ Take a moment to notify the shul office of any engagements, marriages, births, special birthdays or anniversaries in your family. Send along a picture! We would love to share the ‘good news.’ Send news / pictures to [email protected]
