As we embark on a New Year, we begin to reflect on all that took place over the last year. keys to open these locks. But there is one key that opens every lock: the strong and powerful ax. The ax which opens every lock is the imperfection of the broken heart.

We see suffering and we see brokenness. Yet in this past year I am sure that we have also encountered joy and beauty and deep moments of connection and love. We have experienced new moments of understanding, we have found keys to open new doorways to relationships and life, while other doors may have remained closed tight. The High Holidays are here to do many things, but above all, they remind us to gather it all, the blessings and the challenges, to honestly and humbly sit in the fullness of our lives with intention to move forward into a new year.

So as we gather again this year for the Yamim Noraim, I hope that we take these days seriously. Come with an open heart, ready to not only experience the familiarity of the prayers and rituals of the days, but ready to make real change in your lives, your relationships and the world. If there is brokenness, if this has been a year of challenges or even suffering, then I hope that these days can bring

some much deserved healing. Truly listen to the words of the liturgy and the rituals of these days, but also be open to moving beyond these familiar acts.

Hold onto what you need to and find strength from what touches your soul, but don’t be tied down by the theology and traditions which may seem more like walls than doorways. Make these days your own, and hopefully find moments of simple inspiration amid the fullness of this holy time. Above all, I hope that when the holidays are nearing their end, when the shofar has been sounded and the prayers have been said, that we walk away with the greatest gift of the season, a sense of joy and hopefully a very real sense of purpose. Like the ax of the Baal Shem Tov, now is the time to break open our lives, to create new paths and new ways of being.

In this New Year I look forward to more opportunities to connect with all of you and hope that you will find your place at Dorshei Emet in the coming year. Try something new, and make sure your voice is heard.

May this holiday season reawaken purpose and hope in all of us, and may this year be one of endless blessings and joy. To a sweet and wonderful New Year!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGEWhat is it like being the Executive Director of Dorshei Emet at this time of the year? In my third High Holidays as Executive Director I am feeling like I finally have a handle on things. I am enjoying the flurry of activity, and being on the phone so much reminds me a little of when I was a stockbroker.

As I write this article it’s still steamy summer outside, my vacation is over, and I have caught up with everything that I missed while on holiday. However, this time of year presents a special set of challenges and there is no time to take things easy.

When you come into the shul for the High Holidays the sparkling-clean sanctuary will be full of chairs and there will be fresh flowers on the bimah. Entering, you will have tickets in hand with the schedule of services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, ushers will check your names on their lists to welcome you into the shul and your bag may be checked by security guards. All of these details,

Cynthia Weinstein

in ways that are both similar and different from other families. The birthday parties, the holidays, the dinners, the slights that hurt, the words that offend, the coming together to reconcile as a family that prioritizes our relationships and ensures a happy home and a happy life. This priority gives us the opportunity to reflect on the pursuit of happiness and joy as goals that we aspire to, and work towards, individually and collectively, as family or as other groups that have a common and shared understanding. This year, the Board of Directors has several goals that we hope become part of the fabric of Dorshei Emet. First, we have the goal of effective communication. Ensuring that everyone at Dorshei receives our messages, and understands them in the ways they were intended, is part of the process of group cohesiveness. Therefore, I encourage you to get in touch with us: Board members, executives of the Board, the Rabbi, the Executive Director, when you have an issue or a misunderstanding, or any item that requires further discussion. Our goal is to provide as much clear communication as possible.

We will focus on implementing the policy on speakers and organizational partnerships that will allow us to engage in healthy, respectful, and responsible dialogue, while developing our understanding of issues and concerns close to us. This process will offer an opportunity for self-reflection, checking in on our own implicit biases, and recognizing that while we all have these biases, we remain open to the opinions of others.

and so many more, will have been orchestrated by the office in advance. Nothing is left to chance to ensure that when you arrive for the Days of Awe you will be able to focus on the service knowing that everything is running smoothly.

At this time of the year the phone is constantly ringing with members who want to make arrangements and there is a steady flow of membership forms coming in by mail as well as by online payment. Throw in the production of the tickets, all required lists, the Yizkor Book and the fall Kol Ha’Kehilah newsletter ….at times it feels like I am juggling plates, or chainsaws, but the Dorshei Emet staff has it all under control!

An enormous amount of preparation is involved with the myriad of details that go into the High Holidays at Dorshei Emet. When you call the office, please keep this in mind and be patient when dealing with the staff who are working very hard to make everything perfect for you. We know that this is a stressful time for everyone: back to school, back to work after holidays and the preparation that goes in to the Holidays at home - we really are all doing our best.

On behalf of the staff at Dorshei Emet I would like to wish you and your family a Shana Tova! I look forward to greeting you at shul on my favorite holiday!

We will have fundraising initiatives to share with you as the year progresses. Fundraising and membership renewals provide us with the resources we need to ensure the longevity of Dorshei Emet. Fundraising is at the heart of a non-profit organization, and we rely on your financial support throughout the year to help us keep the programming lively and engaging, to maintain our visibility within the community, and to support all that we do at Dorshei Emet.

Finally, we will be engaging in activities that reach out to the broader community, and that solidify our relationships with longstanding members of Dorshei Emet. Our programs, from Enlightened Bite to Kabbalat Shabbat Mishpacha, are wide and varied, and should appeal to all of you! If they don’t, please get in touch, and let us know what you would like us to offer. We will be happy to accommodate - within a reasonable time frame, of course!

Responding to the needs of families with young children is a priority going forward. We are hoping to offer programming that engages and builds learning in a Jewish context through the lens of Reconstructionist Judaism. Again, we are open to suggestions, and I look forward to hearing from many of you in the coming months.

I wish you all a Shana Tova, a New Year filled with joy and sweetness and all the opportunities to slow down and reflect on the year ahead.

as together we build relationships with security experts, the authorities and each other, develop uniform infrastructure for the future (if needed), and have access to improvements that alone we might not have the time, money or resources to easily implement.

The third party assessment will take place in mid-September. The overall timeline for all elements to be in place for all participants is approx. 12-18 months. In the meantime, the Security Committee will continue to promote the safety of Dorshei Emet as always.

Our participation in this initiative is not based on the belief that there is an imminent danger facing our community. Rather, we prefer to be proactive and prepared. Like Noah’s Ark, we don’t want to wait for the 40 days of rain before we begin building the ark. We would rather begin construction on dry land and work together with some ark experts and our neighbors to help build together some fabulous vessels instead of hammering it out alone.

In the coming months you will hear from us not only with updates but also about your role in making security at Dorshei Emet a true success. We will need to upgrade our security culture as well, including greater awareness of the impact of all our actions on the strength of our security. It is not about equipment alone but also about mindset. We look forward to your active participation as new protocols and procedures are rolled out.

As mentioned in the Weekly Announcements, the Board of Directors approved the participation of Dorshei Emet in the Community Security Network initiative being coordinated by Federation CJA. You may have heard about this initiative in relation to Federation CJA’s campaign launch at the end of August. We had already been looking at improving security at Dorshei Emet. The timing is perfect for this much needed project and offers us the opportunity to cooperate with the larger Jewish community.

As one of a few dozen Jewish organizations (synagogues, schools, community centers) participating in this community-wide initiative to increase security preparedness and confidence, for a flat fee that will not have an impact on our budget, we will receive:

• an individualized assessment of our specific security needs by an expert third party • equipment and software upgrades • institution-specific protocols • on-going training for staff and volunteers • benefits from the funding being raised by Federation CJA

All of the above will be tailored to Dorshei Emet, based on the needs of our building both physically and the way we use it throughout the year.

In addition, we will benefit from being part of a community of organizations

Community Security Network Initiative by The Security Committee

Earlier this month we celebrated Shavuot, when we recall the moment the Israelites received the Torah through Moses at Mt. Sinai. We are commanded to remember one of the most basic principles: We are in this together! I am thrilled to share with you a new approach to Family Shabbat that I am working on with the support of our new Children’s Programming Committee.

This May, during our first meeting with the new committee we discussed what role we want the Dorshei Emet community to have in our children’s lives and how we can find strength in each other. In addition to broadening Jewish knowledge, we all want our children to experience a sense of belonging in our unique Jewish community and make lifelong friends with shared values. I would like to invite parents and grandparents to take an active role in helping us develop a rich and engaging Family Shabbat program for 5780. New this year, parents will take turns helping me plan and implement Family Shabbat programs for both “older” and “younger” children. In the works so far, we are planning to offer painting, building, cooking, ceramics, storytelling, dancing and more.

Friendships and a sense of community build over time, and regular shared experiences are key. Parental input and hands-on help will help to ensure that our program is tapping into our collective talents and offering activities for a wide age range. The possibilities are truly exciting! Other elements of the Family Shabbat program will continue, including prayers and songs with singer-songwriter Fran Avni and a shared kiddush with challah, juice and stories. We are also eager to meet a new Israeli shinshin who will offer a year of service in the Jewish community.

Remembering What We Value by Ronit Yarosky

This summer I had the pleasure of having a family reunion of sorts. Cousins came from all over, including my first cousin from Israel. While no longer religious, she was orthodox for nearly 20 years. She was curious to see what our services were like and joined me for Shabbat service several weeks ago. This experience reminded me why I am so proud to be a member of Dorshei Emet and why I am so grateful to have Dorshei in my life.

That day, my cousin had her first aliya. It is hard to explain the joy I felt sharing this moment with her. This woman (who according to halacha was so much more Jewish than I would ever be considered) experienced Torah in our home. Being there with her and having the congregation sing shehechyanu was simply incredible.

One of the things she had mentioned to me was that over the years, she had grown increasingly uncomfortable with how she felt orthodoxy treats women and non-Jews. On this day, not only did she experience gender equity in worship, she also witnessed diversity and inclusion at its best; in addition to our regular, diverse congregants, guests that day included a rabbi from Massachusetts and his African American

husband and an interfaith couple who had been married by Rabbi Boris.

This is what Dorshei Emet is to me. If it wasn’t for Dorshei Emet, I would not belong to a synagogue. I would not have a constant Jewish presence in my life. I would not be inspired by my fellow members, by the Rabbi’s divrei torah, by the beautiful inclusivity that is reflected in Reconstructionist Judaism.

It is so easy to get caught up in life and overlook the things that we are grateful for. As you get ready to celebrate the Jewish new year, and contemplate your role in the world over this past year, take a moment to reflect on the many ways Dorshei Emet brings joy into your life. Think about how proud you are to belong to a synagogue that celebrates inclusivity – and think about how important it is to ensure that these values continue to thrive for you and your children.

I am asking each and every one of you to support our Annual General Campaign this year, because your support today will ensure that Dorshei Emet is there tomorrow to inspire us, to challenge us, to welcome us - and to provide a place where we can continue to experience miraculous life moments.

Thank you – and Shana Tova u-Metuka!

The reasons we belong to, appreciate and connect with Dorshei Emet are as diverse as our members. Likewise, the reasons to support Dorshei Emet are abundant.

The Family Shabbat dates for 5780 are September 21, October 19, November 2, November 16, December 7, January 18, February 1, February 15, March 7, March 21, April 4, April 18, May 2 and May 16. 7:30 Tuesday evenings: Chairs set up by a group of 8-15 participants. Joyous Chorus members with varied musical experience happily schmoozing. Director Fran Avni begins the fun vocal warm-up session inviting each participant to sing their name and have it echoed by the group. With this spontaneous tune-in, the bonding of the diverse group is reinforced. Then, while clapping hands together on shoulders and knees, they are brought into rhythmic unity.Next, beginning to learn one of Fran’s original compositions inspired by Torah or prayer text, or new arrangements based on contemporary and traditional songs of peace and unity to build the Joyful Chorus repertoire. Not a choir! Mostly learning by listening and repetition developing our ears. Multi-layers are built with careful attention to pitch, rhythm and syncopation. And after a number of sessions, it all flows together in perfect harmony! From Fran: The VisionTo encourage and engage people who love to sing, connect with text, learn more about rhythm and syncopation, strengthen and develop greater musical skills.Goal: harmony in community/community in harmony

How lucky are we!!!!”“I’m learning a lot about harmony and rhythm”“A creative experience, uplifting, community-building, mind-expanding, therapeutic”“Wonderful….joyous….joyful....learning….camaraderie....uplifting....sharing”“…greatly impressed by the manner in which Fran has led this group of choristers, some who have no formal musical background, others with substantial musical background”For You: The PossibilityIf this “strikes a chord” please join us at the weekly Joyous Chorus. Watch the Dorshei Emet Weekly announcement schedule for changes. To keep the Chorus open to all, whatever a participant can contribute is encouraged. A group for those in mourning will commence once again at the shul during the week of Oct 14th PM either on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. This group is open to all faith communities and will consist of 6-8 sessions of approximately 90 minutes. Howard Richler, who is spearheading the group, said that dealing with the loss of a loved one in a group setting was helpful to him after the loss of his wife Ruth 18 years ago.

The group will be headed by Donna Kuzmarov.

If you are interested, or know someone who might benefit from such a group, please contact Howard at [email protected].

KOL HA’KEHILAH | HIGH HOLIDAYS 2019 • ELUL - KISLEV 5780

On a recent Wednesday morning about a dozen men and women gathered together at the synagogue around 7:15 in the morning. A few of us went down to the kitchen to start the coffee and a few others organized the chairs at the back of the sanctuary. One of the men put on tefillin.

Almost exactly at 7:30, the group sat all together. First, we introduced ourselves to a couple who had come for the first time so they could say Kaddish after the death of a family member. We then chanted a niggun – this week we chose “Yih’yu Ratzon – May the Words of My Mouth”.

One member of the group gave a teaching. She spent about ten minutes discussing the Parasha of the week, Pinchas, and brought up some of the traditional and contemporary readings of the portion. She left the group with a charge – an idea upon which to meditate for the next twenty minutes.

Please mark your calendars and save the date for our annual Chanukah Food Basket delivery on Sunday, December 15! This is an annual Dorshei Emet/Ometz initiative whereby food baskets packed by the Jewish Journeys group get delivered in person to families in need in and around Montreal. We cannot do it without your help. Please email [email protected] to sign up as a driver or shlepper, or contact the office to make a donation to the Chanukah Food Basket Fund. Dorshei Emet’s annual Empty Bowls event is also a major contributor to this initiative.

Thank you in advance!

WEDNESDAY MORNING MINYAN

THE CHANUKAH FOOD BASKET COMMITTEE

The meditation, an integral part of the minyan, was silent and peaceful. We could hear sounds on the street, and people entering the synagogue, but we let all these sounds wash over us and we tried to centre ourselves on the moment. We let thoughts pass in and out of our consciousness without focusing on any.

At the sound of the quiet gong, the leader breathed the Shema, joined by the group. As we came back to reality we joined the newcomers in Kaddish. We remembered some congregants who were ill, and some who had good news.

It was now about 8:15 and the serious, focused part of the morning was over. We headed downstairs for coffee, toast, fruit, jokes and stories.

This Meditation Minyan occurs almost every Wednesday year-round, and everyone is welcome. You may come occasionally, or regularly; you can show up to say Kaddish annually, or during the Shiva period. Make it work for you! Please make inquiries at [email protected], through the synagogue office or via Lois Lieff or Audrey Berner

CLIMATE ACTIONFROM A JEWISHPERSPECTIVE

A Conversation With Rabbi Arthur Waskow

Rabbi Waskow is founder and director of The Shalom

Center, a Philadelphia-based national organization that

is a prophetic voice for Jewish, multireligious, and

American life. He has dedicated much of his life’s work to

eco-Judaism, interpreting what the Hebrew Bible teaches

us about healing the world. Rabbi Waskow’s approach to

activism sparks inspired conversations that emphasize

environmental and societal healing through the uplifting

of community, spiritual depth, joy, and song.

Oslo is a darkly funny and sweeping new play. It is the surprising tale

of the back-channel talks, unlikely friendships, and quiet heroics

that led to the 1993 Oslo Accords between the Israelis and the

Palestinians. A deeply personal story set against a complex political

canvas, this multi award-winning play examines the individuals

behind world history and their all too human ambitions.

This evening is a great opportunity to see a wonderful play,

have fun with Dorshei friends and raise funds for the synagogue.

Hatan Torah & Kallat Bereshit Special Kiddush

Pearlann Goldenberg has been an enthusiastic,

active member of Dorshei Emet for 23 years.

After participating in many courses taught by

Rabbi Ron z"l and a variety of other lecturers

over a period of many years, Pearlann

volunteered as a parnass for 8 years.   Pearlann

has been scheduling Haftarah chanters (herself

included) for the past 9 years and was happy to

accept the additional challenge of scheduling

the Torah Leyners last year as well.  She helped

out as a proof-reader for the Dorshei Emet

Bulletin for many years. Pearlann also

contributes to a women's group at Cummings

Center for Seniors.  All in all, she feels great

warmth and affection for Dorshei Emet and has

succeeded in conveying this loving

attitude to her shul family.

Hatan Torah Kallat Bereishit

Eric Caplan is a Professor of Jewish Studies and Jewish

Education at McGill University. Eric joined Dorshei Emet

with his family in 1991. He has served on the Board of

Directors of the Shul and participated in many Committees,

such as Adult Programming (Chair), Social justice, Minhag,

Mahzor and various policy and mission task forces. Eric has

enjoyed sharing with the Congregation his academic

research in Reconstructionism, the life and work of

Mordecai Kaplan, Jewish Social Justice and Modern Jewish

Thought by giving courses and several Shabbat and High

Holiday lectures on these and other topics. He was grateful

for the opportunity to also offer Divrei Torah that allowed

him to do learning beyond his academic expertise. Dorshei

Emet has been his favorite audience: welcoming and

friendly, but also highly intelligent, demanding and

engaged. Eric has proudly served on the Board of the

Reconstructionist movement and is a co-founder and Vice-

President of the Mordecai M. Kaplan Center for Jewish

Peoplehood.
