We received the following notice from the Chicago Rabbinical
Council (CRC) that should be of interest to our readers:
Due to higher levels of insect infestation found in whole iceberg lettuce, the
cRc now recommends using the thrip cloth method for whole iceberg
lettuce. Alternatively, if you do not have a thrip cloth (for whole iceberg
lettuce only) the leaves should be separated and washed well (soaked and
vigorously agitated for a minute) in a bowl of soapy water (or vegetable
wash). The lettuce should then be removed from the soapy water and
washed off in a bowl of clean water. Repeat this process a second time
(soapy water then clean water). No checking required. Bagged pre-washed
iceberg lettuce without Hashgacha requires only one round of the
abovementioned washing method.
