May is a month of transi-tion, as we bring our fiscal year to a close and

elect our new Board at our Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 5, at 10:00 am in the Social Hall.

This year we are also holding a breakfast just prior to the Board meeting to thank our many volun-teers. I hope you all will be able to attend (RSVP to Janice Hirshon at [email protected] for the break-fast).

Being part of the leadership team in a vibrant community such as ours is an enriching and rewarding experience. This past year has been an important and exciting one for B’nai Shalom. Last July we welcomed Rabbis Gurevitz and

Krieger to our community. Since then, we have been working hard at doing things differently.

We modified our administrative structure so that our senior staff (Rabbi, Rabbi-Educator, and Administrator) now acts as a leadership team. We reconfigured our secretarial staff to enhance collaboration and efficiency. In addition, largely through the efforts of Ed Sherr and Mark Rosen, we have taken a major step forward in cleaning up our fiscal books and moving to a cash basis and monthly budgeting. Going forward, this will allow us to have a much clearer understanding of our financial picture as the year unfolds.

Discussions at Board meetings have taken on a distinctly different flavor. We

now spend very little time talking about logistics or administrative issues, and instead focus on the big picture, trying to understand trends in the com-munity at large that will affect how B’nai Shalom will need to evolve over time. We have started to look beyond our four walls by building stronger relations with the Federation of Central Massa-chusetts and other congregations, and by looking for ways to engage unaffili-ated Jews in our community.

From the Rabbi’s Study — Bringing Spirituality to the Synagogue

I want to tell you something about my own spiritual journey, and what I’ve come to believe. I

grew up in a family that belonged to an Orthodox congregation. While I was exposed to a great richness of Jewish tradition and practice there, ultimately I found myself question-ing the rigid structures that, to me, got in the way of my desire for a gen-uine spiritual life. If you’d asked me in my teens, I’d probably have told you, like so many tell me today, that I was “spiritual but not religious.” I think that “religious” is often code for the experience that many have of specific observances, set-aside holy days, and behavioral expectations being emphasized over and above the inner spiritual life. The former without the latter can appear to be an empty shell, devoid of a meaning beyond the maintaining of some-thing that we have inherited that we

have been asked to pass along to the next generation.

My exploration of the “spiritual” first happened in the context of Religious Studies classes at High School — exploring comparative religion. Given the opportunity to study the ideas and not just the outer forms, I was drawn by my sense that the religious enterprise was the means by which we create time and space in our lives for mean-ingful reflection on who we are and how we live. Religious community can provide an essential piece to the practice — how we live in relation to each other.

During my early adult years, I learned meditation practices, I gained level one Reiki training, I read exten-sively from writers who aimed to pull wisdom from across multiple faith traditions rather than just one — peo-ple like Ken Wilber (founding

thinker of “Integral Spirituality”), and scholars of comparative religion like Ninian Smart. I studied with Sufi teachers at interfaith confer-ences. And then a remarkable thing happened — it all brought me back to Judaism. I found that the spiritual practices and tools that I’d been able to explore without any specific, religious frame-work enabled me to return to my cultural “home” and find the inner spiritual life that was there all along. Because the inner spiritual life comes from within. I realized that I had been looking to the outer, religious forms to foster this spiritual life when, in fact, it needed to happen the other way around.

B’nai Shalom Celebrates Shavuot Tuesday, May 14

Confirmation Class Prepares Creative Service

Shavuot has always been one of the most important days in the Jewish calendar. In

earliest times, it was an agricultural holiday in honor of the harvest. Dur-ing the centuries that the Temple stood in Jerusalem, Shavuot became a pilgrimage festival along with Suk-kot and Pesach. These three Holy Days are called the Shalosh Regalim, and were occasions of special offer-ings and worship.

After the destruction of the Sec-ond Temple (70 C.E.), Shavuot took on a new interpretation. It became known as Zeman Mattan Toratenu, the Anniversary of the Giving of our Torah. The ancient Rabbis focused on a second meaning of the word Shavuot, that of “oaths,” especially the oath of the Jewish People to uphold the covenant sworn at Mount Sinai. To uphold that sacred oath, it is appropriate that we have chosen the occasion of Shavuot to celebrate the academic achieve-ments of our 10th grade Confirma-tion Class. Our congregation will celebrate Confirmation on the eve of Shavuot on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at 7:00 pm. A Confirmation/Sha-vuot creative service will be led by our Confirmands, and will be followed by an Oneg Chag provided by the parents of our 9th grade class in honor of our 10th graders.

Welcoming our Confirmands into the Congregation is an inspir-ing moment, not only for friends and family, but for all members of Congregation B’nai Shalom. Just as our ancestors presented their first

fruits at the Temple on Shavuot, the members of the Confirmation class present themselves as Jews ready to affirm their adult religious commit-ments. The tradition of Confirma-tion is a unique expression of our Reform heritage. Please join us as our community celebrates its newest members. Also join us on Wednes-day morning, May 15, 2012 at 7:15 am for our Shavuot morning ser-vice and Yizkor. We look forward to celebrating Shavuot with you.

Year-End Wrap-up

As my sixth school year at Congregation B’nai Shalom comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have helped make this year a strong year of learning, com-munity, and growth.

It is clear to me, and to every-one who enrolls children into our school, that the strength of this school is our faculty. They share their love of Judaism with our stu-dents — passing on Jewish texts and traditions in innovative and exciting ways. Thank you to our wonderful teachers: Lyn Cron, Linda Duke, Lauren Epstein, Ellie Goldberg, Judy Janecek, Tamar Jeniski, Lynn Kass, Barry Luftig, Elliott McCarthy, Debbi Morin, Pamela Penna, Cheryl Pouliot, Beth Spiegel, Kim Stiller and Andrea Young.

An extra thank you to our Jewish Life Educator, Ellyn Shriber, who consistently ensures that our class trips are informative, fun, and safe, and that our informal and family educational programming is the best it can be. Ellyn also coordinated our Madrichim program, adding educational sessions and special

enhancements for our Chai School stu-dents. We will honor Ellyn for her numerous contributions at our Shabbat Rishon Service on May 3.

My thanks, as well, to our Madrichim who work in the classrooms as assistant teachers. They are leaders and role models for our younger students, and inspire us with their energy and enthusiasm. Wishing them all good things, we thank: Spencer Babst, Emma Becker, David Boehm, Stephanie Brown, Emily Brown, Hannah Cayem, Danielle Cohen, Emily Cryan, Jack Danberg, Zachary Gilfix, Adam Gil-fix, David Gordon, Adam Graubart, Jessica Hall, Joshua Hyde, Andrew Hyde, Cerena Johnson, Sarah Kasof, Ariel Kraus, Ben Lazarine, Micali Morin, Eve Morin, Reis Penna, Seth Penna, Jonathan Pouliot, Matthew Pouliot, Sasha Romanoff, Sam Schachter, Jessica Schiffman, Chloe Skraly, Aliya Slayton, Ben Wein-berg, Rebecca Weiss, Lauren Winer, Meaghan Winter and Elijah Young.

Thank you to Rabbi Gurevitz, Gordon Manning, Abby Mayou, and the entire Board of Directors who have partnered with me and supported our work every minute of every day.

My thanks to our B’nai Mitzvah Tutors Lauren Epstein, Sharon Goldstein, Debbi Morin, and Barbara Rennert, who bring our students to the bimah prepared and confident, and to Marsha Beals, who makes sure that the teachers, students, and professional staff have

Informal and Family Educa-tion programs offer an alternative to the regular classroom experience. Family Education seeks to enrich a family’s Jewish perspective, and extend to parents a chance to share in their children’s religious school journey. Informal programs pro-vide students with an occasion for recreation and socialization, but also strive to encourage students to chal-lenge themselves to try new experi-ences and grow through different forms of expression.

Families came together to cel-ebrate the Torah books of Genesis/Beresheit and Numbers/Bamidbar through ritual, text study, music, craft, and, of course, food. Special grade-level programs allowed us to focus on the curriculum lessons of students in grades 1, 4, and 7. We began the year by welcoming the grade 1 families into the school and readying them for Consecration. Our grade 4 families “traveled” to Israel with Young Emissary Rivi

Behar as we celebrated The Flavors of Israel and learned about Israeli religious observance. Finally, as part of their study of Holocaust and Human Behavior, grade 7 examined the topic of antisemistism in their lives through the ADL program: Confronting Antisemitism.

We hope that in addition to giv-ing families a chance to spend time learning together on a Sunday morn-ing, we provided an opportunity for you to meet other families and build community here at the temple. Thanks to all the students and par-ents for making this year in Family Education a huge success.

Offsite trips were wildly success-ful this year. Our 8th graders chal-lenged themselves at the MetroWest YMCA in Hopkinton, explored their leadership potential, and enjoyed team-building exercises. For grade 9, our classroom was the urban excite-ment of New York City, especially the Lower East Side and a most memorable Bat Mitzvah at Central

Synagogue. Speaking up for social justice was the aim of our grade 10 Confirmation class visit to the Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism and our Congressional offices in Washington, D.C. Simi-larly, the grades 4 & 5 Shul-in proved to be hugely popular as we recycled and planted for Tu B’Shvat, and shared pizza at LazerZone.

On many occasions, we were grateful to be joined by our Israeli emissaries, Rivi and Ziv, for their inside view of Israel. And finally, todah rabbah g’dolah to Rabbis Gure-vitz and Eiduson for leading the various adult learning sessions, for providing vision for the educational direction for our congregation, and for challenging me to explore my creative potential.

First, I needed to take the time to find my own spiritual center, and, then, when I re-engaged with Jewish com-munity, Jewish practices, and Jewish observances, they were imbued with a renewed sense of meaning that I brought to them from within.

Ever since I began my training as a Rabbi, it has been apparent to me that a central part of my work is to help others who are seeking oppor-tunities to explore the inner spiritual life more deeply find a way to do that within the framework of Jewish community and synagogue life. To do so is to make our congregation a more spiritual place, and to enable us to engage each other in “big talk” (the opposite of “small talk”). To be able to reflect upon and share our individual journeys into the inner spiritual life with each other makes for powerful connections which sup-

port us as individuals and strengthen us as a community.

A group of congregants began these kinds of conversations together in my recent “Introduction to Jewish Mysticism” class on Sunday morn-ings. Mysticism, essentially, brings our attention to our own experiences as the gateway to exploring our spiri-tuality. Rather than studying Jewish intellectual history and the philoso-phy of religion, we explore spiritual practices such as meditation, and our “study” consists of reflecting on our own lived experiences, paying atten-tion to the truths they teach us about the source of happiness, centered-ness, balance, our ability to nurture relationships, how we relate to our children and to our parents, and every other aspect of day-to-day liv-ing. It became clear to us that these conversations opened the doorway

to a different way of exploring the inner spiritual life, embedded within the context of synagogue community and Jewish living, bringing greater meaning to both.

It is my desire and intention to continue to provide a forum for these explorations of personal spirituality here at B’nai Shalom. While I am always happy to meet individually for these conversations, I want to provide a place within our community where we can explore together. We will be meeting monthly to provide this opportu-nity, open to all. The first gathering for this Spiritual Journey Group will be Tuesday, May 21, 7–8:30 pm. I hope you will join us.

Starting Tuesday, May 21, 7–8:30 pm

What is the source of true happiness? How do we center ourselves in the midst of turbulent times?

How do we learn to trust? How do we build and maintain deep relationships in our lives?

These, and many other questions arise in our exploration of the inner spiritual life.Join Rabbi Gurevitz for a new, monthly spiritual journey group as we seek to examine these questions together, through conversation, reflection, and the exploration of spiritual practices that can help guide us. Brotherhood News

If you weren’t able to attend any Brotherhood events in April, you missed a lot. First, thanks go out to Adam Winter for sharing his secret (now not-so-secret!) family matzo brei recipe at the Brotherhood Pass-over breakfast — a tasty time was had by all — and we look forward to this becoming an annual event. Also, thanks go to Brian Cohen for his persistence in organizing another men’s bowling night at Pinz in Miford; at this rate, we’ll either all be expert bowlers, or else in physi-cal therapy. On April 14, there was a well-attended Brotherhood and congregational family outing to see the Pawtucket Red Sox, with over 35 people making the trek from West-borough to Rhode Island. Brother-hood (along with Sisterhood) will be providing and serving pizza lunch to hundreds of hungry Mitzvah Day volunteers.

Looking ahead, all hands on deck are requested Sunday morning, May 19 (the last day of religious school) to help with the annual end-of-school Bar-B-Que, sponsored and provided by Brotherhood as a ser-vice to the entire congregational community. We need volunteers to cook and serve, as well as set-up and clean-up. Please e-mail Adam at [email protected] and let him know how you would like to help.

Also, in June, Brotherhood volun-teers are requested to help serve din-ner at Community Meals in North-borough. Details to follow.

As always, be sure to visit the Brotherhood-sponsored Café Sha-lom in the temple lobby each Sunday when religious school is in session; exceptions this month are May 5, when there will be a congregrational volunteer breakfast and annual meet-ing, and May 19 for the end-of-school BBQ).

Sisterhood Happenings

As our membership year comes to a close, we want to thank all the wonderful congregants who performed the much-needed mitzvah of hosting an oneg during the year. Without the help of caring temple members, our oneg Shab-bat every Friday night wouldn’t be a wonderful opportunity to form warm and meaningful relationships with each other. Thank you to Beth Magnone and Barbara Windt for captaining so many times we have lost count. Thank you as well to the others who pitch in whenever they can to help.

It’s a pleasure to partner with Brotherhood again this year to host the Mitzvah Day lunch.

The next book for the book group is For You Mom, Finally, by Ruth Reichl. This story depicts the frustration of a generation of women who lived when modern conveniences had replaced many of the chores women had tradition-ally done around the home without providing them adequate oppor-tunity to direct their energies into new domains. Ruth finally real-izes the pain her mother felt at the constraints of life in her generation.

Ruth is humbled by the sacrifices her mother made for her in order to ensure that Ruth would have a better, happier life than her own. She is chagrined to realize that her mother’s efforts had been so success-ful that she had never noticed. We will be meeting Thursday, May 23, at 7:00 pm, location to be announced.

Best.

Update on the Scrip ProgramThe basic concept of Scrip is simple. B’nai Shalom is able to purchase gift cards at a discount for hundreds of different stores and restaurants — many of which you already shop or dine at. Since the gift cards are sold at face value, you are able to spend the money you would already be spending, and B’nai Shalom gains the value of the discount. While some cards have relatively small margins, many have margins between 7 and 16%.

The office maintains some scrip in stock (currently Barnes & Noble, Buca di Beppo, CVS, D’Angleo/Papa Gino’s Lands’ End, Outback, Roche Bros, Ruby Tuesday, Staples, Starbucks, Stop & Shop, Under Armor, and Walmart). Other scrip must to be ordered and paid for in advance. Forms can be found in the office and online. We can accept credit cards as well, but prefer check or cash due to processing costs. It is easy, but it does take a little planning.

Additionally, if you contact Temple Administrator Abby Mayou, she can give you a password for logging onto the shopwithscrip.com website. There you can select the scrip you want on your order, and then pay the office by send-ing in payment or dropping it off during office hours. The office will let you know when the scrip has come in.

Additionally (details in a future article), you can participate in the ScripNow® and Reload programs. There are retailers for whom you can print scrip (eCards) once you pay the office, as well as retailers whose plastic cards can be reloaded once you pay the office. For example, Chipotle has become a ScripNow retailers, and Whole Foods now allows Reloads on cards purchased through the program. For more information, contact Art Sherman at [email protected] or Stu Weiss at [email protected].

Survey on Doing Mitzvot

Be sure to look in your inbox for an invitation from Rabbi Gurevitz to take a brief online survey on activi-ties you’re engaged in — whether frequently or only on occasion — of tikkun olam, repairing the world. We’re trying to learn where our shared passions and interests lie, so that we may connect with each other, and become a more powerful spiritual community.

Lunch and Learn Series: Creation, Revelation, and RedemptionWith Rabbi Rachel Gurevitz, Thursday, May 9, 12:00 – 1:30 pm. Topic: Redemption. Place: The Wil-lows Community Room. Bring your own bag lunch. Drinks will be provided. Please contact Marsha Beals at [email protected] in advance if you would like to park at B’nai Shalom and carpool over to The Wil-lows. Join Rabbi Gurevitz for the final session in this series of lunch and learn classes as we explore the theme of Redemption in Biblical and post-Biblical sources. What is the Jewish vision of the future, and how do we get there?

Names of Graduates to be Published in June Bulletin

The names of high school, college, and graduate school graduates will be published in the June Bulletin. Please call the temple office at 508-366-7191 or send an e-mail to [email protected], and let us know the name of your son/daughter, school graduating from (and the degree if from college or graduate school), and plans for the future.

While all of these changes are sig-nificant, they do not begin to reflect the palpable change in ambiance that you feel when you walk through our doors, the playfulness of our “Ritual Lab” services, the com-munity of Shabbat morning Torah Study, or the interest generated as we explored mysticism in a Jewish context.

The measures I described only help to form the foundation for our future success. However, noth-ing will feel different to you if you do not consider yourself to be an

integral part of the community. By sharing your joys and struggles with others in our community, the entire community becomes enriched. Your participation in the many fun or enriching experiences that take place regularly at our temple, especially if you help to plan something new that your feel passionate about, will help enhance its meaning for you as well the community. Please share your thoughts and ideas with me, Rabbis Gurevitz or Eiduson, Abby, or any member of the Board.

In closing, I would like to thank

our “retiring” Board members — Wendy Wilsker (VP of Congrega-tional Affairs), Ed Sherr (Treasurer), Debbie Bresnick, Nioma Lazarine and Wendy Starr — for all of their hard work over the past few years to help ensure that our community prospered.

Our Passover-themed Tot Shabbat was a big success. We enjoyed creative Passover songs and dances during the service, and a frog puppet craft during the oneg.

Thank you to Bree Shaw for orga-nizing a wonderful PJ Havdalah.

Tot ShabbatJoin us for our next Tot Shabbat

on Saturday, May 18, at 10:15 am. There will be a special Baby Blessing for all babies under one-year old. A clergy-led service for children ages 0–6 will take place in

the Sanctuary, followed by a child-friendly oneg in the social hall. Please bring a nut-free snack such as fruit, veggies, or homemade breads to the Social Hall when you arrive.

Baby/Toddler PlaygroupOur playgroup for young children

ages 0–3 meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 9:30 am in the Pre-K classroom at Congrega-tion B’nai Shalom. Please contact Jen Marks at [email protected] for more information. Hope to see you there.

Early Childhood CommiteeMoms and dads are always

needed to help plan upcoming EC events, and no help is too small. It’s a fun chance to have a night out as well. The Early Childhood Commit-tee typically meets on the 4th Tues-day of each month at 7:15 pm at the temple.

Yad b’ Yad – Program on Dealing With a Loved One With DementiaWarm weather is starting to tease us with the possibility of spending more recreational time

outdoors. Despite that temptation, there are many people in our

bie Pickholtz, Karen Weiner, Wendy Schiffman, Judd Hirsh, Rachel Hep-pen, Karen Rothman and Gordon Manning, Alisa Stone, Sarah Herzig, Phyllis Simas, Janice Hirshon, Beth Magnone, and Anita Backer. On Thursday, May 2, at 7:30 pm, there will be a special program led by Rabbi Julie Wolcoff on “Dealing With a Loved One With Dementia.”

This subject has or one day will touch many of us.

Please contact Anita or Janice if Yad b’Yad can be of any assistance to you, your family, or other congre-gants.

A sincere thanks to all,Anita [email protected] [email protected]

Our B’nai Mitzvah

Brian Dickey becomes a Bar Mitzvah on May 4, 2013. Brian is the son of Ken and Lori Dickey, and has an 11-year old brother, Adam. Brian lives in Upton, and is a sev-enth grader at Miscoe Hill Middle School. In his free time, Brian enjoys playing lacrosse, snowboarding, bik-ing, music, and spending time with his friends. Brian’s favorite mitzvah was volunteering with the Com-munity Harvest Project in Grafton, where all fruits and vegetables har-vested by volunteers are donated for hunger relief in Worcester County.

Ben Gordon becomes a Bar Mitzvah on May 11, 2013. Ben is the son of Sue Gordon and David Gor-don, and has an older sister, Emily, age 15. Ben lives in Southborough, and is in the seventh grade at the Trottier Middle School. In his free time, Ben enjoys soccer, trumpet, and playing Minecraft. Ben’s favor-ite mitzvah was volunteering at the Southborough Pet Food Pantry.

Alana Spiro becomes a Bat Mitzvah on May 11, 2013. Alana is the daughter of Gary and Beth Spiro, and has a younger sister, Emma, age 11. Alana lives in Westborough, and is in the seventh grade at the Gibbons Middle School, where she is a High Honors student. In her free time, Alana enjoys soccer, art, computers, and music. Her favorite mitzvah has been working with the elderly.

Ilana Lippold becomes a Bat Mitzvah on May 25, 2013. Ilana lives in Westborough with her parents, Marcy and Tim Lippold, and her Maine Coon cats, Trouble and Lady Guinevere. Ilana is a seventh grader at Gibbons Middle School, where she participates in orchestra, as well as sculpture and art clubs. Outside of school, Ilana performs with the Worcester Youth Symphony Orchestra and studies violin privately. In her free time, Ilana enjoys dance, listening to music, and spending time with

friends. An avid animal lover, Ilana worked with Greyhound Friends, a non-profit rescue organization in Hopkinton, where she raised public awareness about the plight of racing greyhounds and collected needed supplies. This community service project earned her the Girl Scout Bronze Award. For her B’mitzvotav project, Ilana continued working with this organization. She wrote a letter to the Polartec Corporation in Lawrence asking for a donation of fleece fabric that could be sewn into kennel blankets. With a gener-ous donation of fabric, Ilana met her goal of sewing thirteen blankets for the Greyhounds. Ilana continues to volunteer at Greyhound Friends. She hopes families will consider these gentle dogs for adoption (for more information please visit www.greyhound.org).
