FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESKAnna Marks OAM

September has been a quiet month because of the Yom Tovim, however, the result of the Drought Appeal so far is a very impressive $23,001.

I propose to hand over a cheque to the Lions Club at our Succot BBQ on Wednesday

26th September. Flyer is attached, please book with Jenny. We can only accommodate 50 people in the Shalom Succah, so first in best served….

Following the afternoon tea for ex-South Africans last month, it is very gratifying that 3 people have opted to re-join B’nai B’rith. Two people have joined Womanpower as well and we (Vivienne & I) are fielding enquiries from Facebook about B’nai B’rith all the time.

At almost at the last minute, I have decided to go to the B’nai B’rith International Leadership Forum in New York in mid-October. Steve and I have been to BBI conferences in New York and Ottawa and the contacts I made during those visits have been invaluable over the years.

At the Leadership Forum, Morris Tobias, Chairman of the BB ANZ Board of Governors will be inducted as a Senior Vice President of BBI, responsible for Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Israel.

We have an exciting new opportunity to read the quarterly BBI magazine online. Please click on the link https://www.bnaibrith.org/bbm-fall-2018 It is always interesting to read the BBI President’s and Dan Mariaschin’s always thoughtful comments and other relevant articles.

Last week I made contact with Ian Kendal, CEO of BBYO in Washington and Vivienne and I will be talking to him on Skype next week. They have an exciting programme for youth and perhaps we can learn something from them. They are expanding internationally and establishing a chapter of BBYO in Melbourne later this year.

B’nai B’rith Retirement Villages will be having an Extraordinary General Meeting on Wednesday, 3rd October at Princess Gardens 7.30pm to amend their constitution. Don’t forget that if you have opted in to the company you are entitled to vote or send a proxy.

On Sunday, October 7th at the BB Centre, 2.30pm Eli Rabinowitz will be doing a presentation on the Partisan Song, composed in the Warsaw Ghetto, which virtually became the anthem of resistance during the war. We will also be very privileged to hear Len Mahemoff sing the Partisan song. Please see flyer.

Dear Members,

Because of the Yom Tovim this will be a shorter report than usual as we didn’t have a function or meeting during the month of September.

A number of members have returned from overseas in time for the high holidays. We welcomed back Juliet Seifert, Ann Milch, Elaine Bogan, Ofira Singer, Ron Gerechter and Leah Sheldon. This month sees Evelyn Perets and John Roozendaahl leave our shores for Israel and beyond. We look forward to hearing all the news on their return.

Sadly a number of members have been unwell and we wish a speedy recovery to Gary Marx and Ellis Jacobs who have both spent a short stay at St. Vincents.

On a happier note, Googie Ginges has welcomed a great granddaughter to her fold and Leah Shelton’s family has grown to include 11 great grandchildren. Mazeltov to them both.

We wish to invite all members of B’nai B’rith to join us at the following:

Monday, October 15th at 7.30 – B’nai B’rith Centre General meetingOur guest speaker will be Ruth Guth, Community Development Officer of Wolper Jewish Hospital. ALFRED DREYFUS UNIT (ADU)President Ernie Friedlander OAM

Dear Members

I hope you moved well into our New Year. We certainly need to be grateful for living in a good country and enjoying our religious freedom.Sadly

One of our friends and supporters, Robin Nahum, passed away, 2 days before Rosh Hashanah. He was our sound expert at the Human Rights Addresses and helped with the Moving Forward Together website update. At his funeral Rabbi Jackie Ninio delivered the most powerful eulogy I heard for a long time.

Anti Racism CampaignWe had a suitable campaign manager in sight, but the young lady has been offered a full time job and we could only offer a two day a week engagement. We are putting feelers out to find another young person who has experience dealing with people from diverse walks of life. At a special meeting the direction was agreed only the tactics and timing are still issues.

“Racism is Unacceptable” is the draft agenda focusing on avoiding stereotyping, leading to prejudice, discrimination, conflict and violence.

What is also most encouraging is that the young are keen to be involved, filling the gaps we have in B’nai B’rith.

Also most importantly we are likely to have starting partners to enhance the project namely the NRL, STARTTS, the Chinese Australian Forum, Shalom College and the Australian Bahaí.

Prize Giving for the Harmony Day Poster & Song Writing competitions:This was a most uplifting event, held in the newly renovated theatrette of Parliament House. It was packed. We could only seat 160 but there were 185 present. The VIP’s included NSW President, Anna Marks OAM , NSW Vice President Dorrit Mahemoff.

Leader Luke Foley, 3 Ministers and Members of Parliament and Christopher Sullivan representing NSW Governor, General David Hurley.

The posters were outstanding as were the 1st & 2nd prize winners of the Song Writing competitions. They identified extremely well with the 2018 theme “Growing Together in Harmony.

Your comments would be appreciated – have a wonderful, healthy and enjoyable 5779.

COURAGE TO CAREChairperson Juliet Seifert

Our Courage to Care in the Classroom program has continued to be in demand during August and our teams of volunteers will again be busy in October.

In August we re-visited Glenmore Park High

School, where the program was presented to 80 Year 10 students. The organiser teacher at the school, Katie Ritchie, completed the Yad Vashem Holocaust Studies program as recipient of a Gandel Scholarship. Katie once again had prepared the students very well before our visit. We have been invited to return next year.

We also had three busy days at the Emanuel School in late August. The program was attended by 80 Students from Year 8 and 42 Students from Year 6. This was our first visit to Emanuel School using our latest classroom program. The teachers recognised that the time allocated (two school periods) was too short and have invited us back next year, with an extended time for presenting the program.

We have a number of bookings from schools for the month of October.

Tuesday 16 Oct Our Lady of Mercy 130 students Year 10

Wednesday 17 Oct St Ives High 90 students Year 10

Thursday 18 Oct Newington College 51students Year 6

Tuesday 23 October Canberra College 40 students Year 12

Tuesday 30 Oct Northern Beaches Christian School 60 Students Year 10

Wednesday 31 Oct Northern Beaches Christian School 60 Students Year 10

This offers opportunities for interested people to come and see how the program works. If you would like to take up the opportunity to observe the program in action, please contact Faye Radom at [email protected]

Training and mentoring our volunteers are also important activities. A training session for workshop leaders was held on 12 August and we were very pleased to welcome new volunteers and to also welcome back those volunteers who were

interested in becoming involved in the classroom program.  We will be having more training sessions in the next month or so as we believe it is important to keep finding ways to improve our program and to make it more engaging for our students.  In particular, Faye Radom and Annie Friedlander have been working on providing additional resources for our workshop leaders.

The Courage to Care Exhibition and Program will be going to the Gold Coast in June next year, presenting at the Katranski Community Hall. Volunteers from both Sydney and Queensland will together form teams to run the four weeks of the program.

Celebrating 20 years of Courage to Care

So much has been achieved by our organisation since its inception that it deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated. And that is exactly what is being planned: a special celebratory High Tea from 2.30pm to 5.00pm on 10th March 2019 at the Vaucluse House Tea Rooms. All volunteers, past and present, will be invited and welcomed. It will be an afternoon of reunions, music, some surprises, lots of fun and delicious treats. So please mark it in your diary now!

Growing and Sustaining Courage to Care

We welcome enquiries from anyone who relates to the mission of Courage to Care and wants to get involved in helping us make it a reality. So if you’re interested in helping deliver our vision - to develop an informed, peaceful society, with understanding and respect for all minority groups – call our Program Coordinator, Hezie Lazarov on 9321 6301, to discuss how you might best become involved.

Thanks to the brilliant planning by our Social Convener, Sharon Dobson, several of us had a wonderful weekend in Bowral from 21-23 September.

Sharon had to make a few changes to her plans a couple of weeks beforehand as the hotel restaurant was placed under separate management and another planned restaurant was closed on account of a kitchen fire. Nonetheless we enjoyed afternoon tea together, wandered through the local markets and visited Moss Vale twice both times for dinner at different establishments.

Another outing with D.A.R.T.S. is scheduled for 21 October at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway in Concord. Arrive by 11:15 am. Please advise Miriam Kluger of your participation in this regular benevolence activity of our Unit.

Also on 21 October a visiting Israeli, Yonatan Kaplan (and son of Myra and Ivan) will present a personal perspective on developments in Israel – its dilemmas and possible solutions.

This will be at my home starting at 7:30pm. In order that we can provide enough seating would you please RSVP to either myself or to Sharon. I will then send you instructions on how to get to my address.

You will all be intrigued by our guest speaker on 11 November. A private investigator, Lonii Broers, will provide a few anecdotes about her profession. The venue will be at the Dobsons’, starting at 2:30 pm. Again, please RSVP to Sharon.

As you will be aware, Robyn Browne’s family made a generous donation in appreciation of the tribute we made at our AGM to her father Errol Brown. We are liaising with the Kadimah Gardens’ Manager to ascertain on what facility this could be spent to further memorialise Errol who had been a volunteer there.

Mazeltov to Miriam Kluger on the marriage of her granddaughter Brianna, to Hilary and Hylton Bernstein on the barmitzvah of their grandson and to Yvonne Rawick on the barmitzvah of her grandson. Mazeltov to Myra and Ivan Kaplan on the birth of a great granddaughter in Israel

Best wishes to Wolf Hochmann for a speedy recovery after a breaking some bones in a recent fall. He is currently in hospital, waiting to go to rehab.

For those of you that have access to a succah I hope that you enjoy this beautiful festival coinciding with spring in Australia.

PROJECT MANAGER’S REPORTVivienne Radomsky

I hope all our members had a good Rosh Hashanah and easy fast.

Following the success of our collaboration with MDA with the First Aid course for children in the last school holidays, we hosted another afternoon

course for Grandparents and Carers which yielded a successful response.

I have organised one more in the October holidays, dedicated to teenagers who babysit. BBYO will be running two photography workshops in the October holidays and our first one has already filled really quickly. We have been made a very generous offer by Mandelbaum House who will host us for the first day of each workshop, provide accommodation and a kosher lunch. This will mean we don’t have to catch a bus to Newtown as we can walk.

We had a large number of parents and children taking part in the Rosh Hashanah parcel deliveries on Sunday 2 September. I received a few lovely notes from parents.

“Thank you for the wonderful experience on Sunday. We were very humbled by the experience.

One man with hand motions made us come into his house. He could not speak a word of English but wanted us to sit down.  He then went to his fridge to get us Russian chocolates, which he put on a plate. Here we were doing a mitzvah and here he was doing a mitzvah too. We had to sit with him and we could not communicate but we had to eat a chocolate before we left. My little boy gave him a cuddle before we left.  Please can you put our name down for next year as we would love to do it again?”

Lessons of the Partisan’s Song – A workshopOn Sunday 7 October, Eli Rabinowitz will present a workshop on his recent work in South Africa and Lithuania with the Partisan’s song. Eli is well known for his blogs about Jewish life and travel. I have included a short bio on Eli below and invite you all to attend. I am thrilled to announce that Len Mahemoff will be singing the Partisan’s Song for us on the day.

Eli, a filmmaker, researches family and Jewish cultural history. He travels extensively and writes about Jewish life and travel on his website, Tangential Travel and Jewish Life, http://elirab.me

Eli writes and manages 86 Kehila Links – Jewish websites for  JewishGen.org, the world’s largest Jewish genealogical organisation, with a database of 500000 followers. His Kehila Links include sites in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Germany, Russia, China, South Africa and Australia.  Eli’s articles have been published in numerous international Jewish and genealogical websites and publications. He has lectured in numerous countries, at Limmud, and at International Jewish Genealogical Societies’ conferences in the USA, Israel and Poland.  Eli arranges customised Litvak and Polish heritage tours.Eli’s passion for working with schools in the Former Soviet Union and South Africa has led him to establish the Partisan Song Project, a global initiative.

BBYO young photographer features at the City of Sydney little photography lives competition

I am delighted to announce that one of our young photographers, Max Gertler, was a finalist in the Little Lives Photography Competition with one of the photos he took at our July workshop.

This is part of the City of Sydney photography competition that is on display in Hyde Park until 7 October. Max and his family attended the launch which was hosted by Clover Moore and was awarded a certificate.

Call for unused, second hand laptops

Philip Feinstein (Music for Refugees) will be travelling to Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya in November to work with Burundian refugees and has asked for donations of second hand laptops to donate to local schools and medical centres. Please contact me at the office if you can make a donation.

Womanpower bake at OBKOn the 31st August, a group of ladies from our Wompanower unit went along Our Big Kitchen to partake in the honey cookie bake before Rosh Hashanah. We were delighted to be given a crate full of honey cookies that were haded out to residents at BBRV villages in Rose Bay and Wahroonga before Rosh Hashanah.

SYD EINFELD (SEU)President Andrew Havas

B’nai B’rith Communicator October 2018

Our AGM is now over and the SEU executive has been elected so it’s now time to put our shoulders to the grindstone and plan the year ahead. The makeup of the Executive team has stayed much the same as in the previous year, with

only some of the positions swapping roles. Again, I would like to encourage those members who have not served on the executive to seriously consider joining the next SEU executive.

After all we are all volunteers and volunteering isn’t simply nice to do; it’s necessary for the health of our society. Australia runs on the spirit of volunteering. Without the efforts of millions of men, women and children who give their time to help others in their communities, our country would be a different place. The selfless spirit with which volunteers approach their unpaid work says something special about the Australian community. Volunteering has allowed me to meet a large variety of interesting people, learn many new skills, contribute to the directions of our organisation and has given me the ability to influence many outcomes.I would imagine it’s been a long time since any one of us would have come across the Syd Einfeld Units Mission statement, yes we do actually have one and it is:-

Syd Einfeld Unit Mission StatementTo bring Jewish men and women together in fellowship to serve the Jewish and general communities of Australia through various voluntary activities, charitable work, and through carrying out and supporting programs which contribute to the security and survival of the State of Israel.

At the last executive meeting, we discussed the end of year function and a number of exciting suggestions were canvased. We thought that an outing by train to Woy Woy and then onto Davistown by Ferry where we would have lunch at the local RSL would be popular as was our Kiama train trip last time.

I have been heartened by the membership turnout at our regular monthly meeting and also our many

functions during the year. I would encourage those of you that for whatever reason don’t come regularly to let any member on the executive know what programs you might like us to consider implementing. I am excited about the fact that we had four new members installed on Sunday at our general meeting.

Sunday’s meeting was an extra special one as we had a number of Japanese Guests, who shared with us how a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony is performed and its meaning. The Japanese tea ceremony (茶道, sadō or chadō, lit. “the way of tea” or 茶の湯, chanoyu) is a Japanese tradition steeped in history. It is a ceremonial way of preparing and drinking green tea typically in a traditional tearoom with tatami floor. Beyond just serving and receiving tea, one of the main purposes of the tea ceremony is for the guests to enjoy the hospitality of the host in an atmosphere distinct from the fast pace of everyday life. A Japanese sweet is served before tea and is supposed to be eaten before the tea is drunk. Zen Buddhism was a primary influence in the development of the Japanese tea ceremony. I am very much enjoyed my good friend Sakae and her team’s performance..

Dear all,Our famous balaboosta evening was a great success held at the end of August. We hosted 30 people, many of whom heard about the event on the Jewish Mums of Sydney website.

We happily embraced webcam technology and thanks to Jenny Mandel and Viv Radomsky, we viewed the cooking demonstration on 2 large screens. Janine and Belinda began the evening in a fun way pointing out that “we are not the Monday morning cooking group”, we are just like you in our kitchen at home, following the recipe. They made cinnamon buns and easy honey cake which tasted very nice. Janine talked us through making mock crayfish using white fish which is soaked in the tasty sauce that she made. Some participants were chosen to taste the sauce and were at liberty to add condiments to “spice” it up! Then Nina praised the speed of induction cooking and made sweet carrots called tzimmes and whipped up a healthy tahini dressing to pour over Asian greens. Jenny Cantori followed with a vegan chopped liver recipe. We sat down to eat a delicious healthy meal and enjoyed meeting new ladies, some of whom hadn’t been to our B’nai B’rith premises before.

People were so enthusiastic for another balaboosta evening that we have set the date for pre -Chanukah event on Sunday 25 November at 6pm. Recipes with OIL will star!

Women’s Spirituality EveningSix Womanpower members attended the Women’s Spirituality evening at North Sydney in late August. We were very impressed by the calibre of speakers and unexpected musical presentations. Julie McCrossin spoke about her throat cancer survival with much humour. Sallie Hammond has worked as a volunteer for over 30 years dedicating herself

to helping those less fortunate than herself. She set up the Families Course which is now expanding around Australia and has been well accepted overseas. There’s a training and support system in place for trainers and a growing team of people who love to teach the course and support other families. Cynthia Banham survived a plane crash but lost her runner’s legs in the process – and life as she knew it. Her gritty determination to achieve has impressed her family, friends and doctors. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and appreciate, even more, comfy chairs since sitting on BYO cushions on church pews for a few hours!

Our inaugural “Safe Conversations” course will be held on Sunday 14 October hosted by Janine Zimbler.
