FEATURES

- The front grille design pursues a more powerful appearance as well as elegance, using three high-quality bars with slits in them and a frame that encloses a larger vertical space.

- The front bumper presents a wide, powerful graphic presence that helps enhance the tough Land Cruiser image.

- The headlight design shows a sense of width and presence, with the integated corner lamp and the high beam portion that connects smoothly with the radiator grill.

- The radiator grill has three bars that stand out, and the front center has a symbol mark displaying a sense of power appropriate for the LAND CRUISER.

FEATURES

- The chrome-plated back door molding includes the Land Cruiser logo, resulting in a different look and a feeling of luxury. The Toyota logo has been eliminated.

- The new rear combination lamps include a clear lens for the turn signals instead of the current amber lens, resulting in a more sophisticated look.

- The rear license lamp cover is changed as the logo incorporated on the back door molding is newly designed for the liftgate backdoor model. The logos for other models are also redesigned.

- The rear combination lamp uses LEDs placed in a block-like manner in the tail and stop lamps for a tough and highly textured design.

Power Windows

- Power windows with one-touch up/down function are provided in all the doors. In addition, a jam protection function is (also) provided.

- The functionality that is worthy of the King of the 4x4s and the abundant space are synergized at high levels in order to create an attractive interior of the SUV that enhances with use.

- The large center cluster, which sports a simple three-part design of black metallic on the left and right and burnished champagne gold metallic in the center, adds to the distinctive air expected of a luxury SUV.

- The movements of the instrument needles were changed from cross coil to step motor.

- Some indicators use chip illumination.

- The new instrument panel features a 5-speed automatic transmission gear position indicator. Legibility is assured by use of the same shape of position indicators as is on the console. Except for R, the indicators now have a night illumination reducer.

- The voltage and fuel gauges are changed. The voltmeter indicates from 9V to 19V, making it more convenient. The fuel gauge has equally spaced marks between the E (empty) mark and the F (full) mark, as well as a fuel lid position indicator.

- High-quality seats have been achieved by providing a pleasant and distinctive character to the seats and enhancing their seating comfort.

- The front seals exude high quality through their comfortable feel, high level holding performance, and powerful and ample form.

- The rear No. 1 seat provides the proper support and roominess to ensure comfort on long drives.

- The rear No, 1 seat provides a 60/40 split configuration to improve the ease of in-and-out access to the rear No. 2 seat (GX and VX grades).

- The rear No. 2 seat is the front-facing detachable type, and the floor looks neat and orderly after the seat has been removed. In addition, the rear visibility can be improved by changing the position of the luggage space (front-facing seat).

- Three types of separate seats are available, the normal seats, the 4-way vertical seats, and the power seats.

- A headrest is provided for the center seat (GX and VX grades) and for the outer seat (all grades).

- Both sides are provided with a reclining mechanism.

- On the models that come equipped with the rear No. 2 seat, two types of rear No, 2 seats are provided: the opposing and the front-facing seats.

- The front-facing seats are provided with the space-up and removable functions.

- Moreover, the position of the top of the seat in the space-up state has been lowered to improve the driver's visibility in the rear diagonal direction.

- A reclining mechanism is provided in both seats.

- A headrest is provided as standard equipment on the outer seat of the front-facing seats.

- The 1FZ-FE engine is a 4.5-liter, 24-valve DOHC engine. The changes listed below have been made to the previous model's 1FZ-FE engine to improve its performance and to reduce vibrations.

- The intake manifold shape has been changed for improved performance and weight reduction.

- Compact and lightweight injectors have been adopted, and their atomization has been optimized to improve responsiveness.

- The TDI (Toyota Direct Ignition) has been adopted for the ignition system to eliminate the need for adjusting the ignition timing, thus simplifying the system and improving its reliability.

- Exhaust emissions are further controlled by additional catalysts and a change in engine management to meet emissions regulations.

- Models with IFS (Independent Front Suspensions) have lead-free aluminum electroplated steel fuel tanks.

- The new fuel cap is tethered to the inlet to help drivers not to forget to screw it back on the fuel inlet after filling up.

- The sub fuel tank system uses the sub fuel switch that is located on the instrument panel to select the main tank or the sub tank to supply fuel to the engine.

- For refueling, either the main or the sub fuel tank can be selected by properly directing the fuel nozzle to the respective filler neck.

FEATURES

- The new-generation 5-speed automatic Super-ECT* (Electronic Controlled Transmission) includes considerable advanced technology.

- A wide range of gears with close gear ratios results in incredible power that can take any on-road or off-road condition, as well as superior fuel economy.

- Use of a precision hydraulic control system results in a smooth feel to the gear shifting and superior driveability.

- Increased powerplant rigidity contributes to low vibration and noise at high speeds.

- Use of aluminum for the oil pump cover and front gears, along with a very thin torque converter put this vehicle at the top of the class in terms of lightening weight and making parts more compact.

- New ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) is adopted for the 5-speed automatic Super-ECT (Electronic Controlled Transmission). While maintaining high-temperature viscosity to help contribute to AT longevity, the fluid is less viscous at normal operating temperatures, which contributes to fuel efficiency.

- Discontinuance of the AT fluid filler tube and level helps prevent after-market insertion of different fluids, over filling, and under-filling and enhances ease of maintenance. Enhanced maintainability enabled installation of a new fluid level detection device (overflow type).

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLOOR SHIFT LEVER

- Newly adopted gate-type gearshift lever* feels luxurious while being very simple to operate.

- The gate path makes it easy for the driver to confirm the movement of the gearshift lever.

- The gearshift lever is now moved laterally instead of having a knob button.

- Instead of an overdrive switch, the gearshift lever can be put into 4 ranges, allowing the driver to select overdrive with the lever.

- For L range driving, the microswitch in the gearshift lever sends a signal that commands the transmission to go into L range.

- The housing is hairline brushed metal and the gate path is lined with a chrome-plated guide. In addition, the gate path is indirectly illuminated at night.

- A shift lock device with a key interlock is adopted.

- The key cannot be removed from the ignition unless the shift lever is in the “P” (Park) position. When the key is removed from the ignition, the shift lever cannot be moved from “P”. Additionally, the brake pedal must be depressed before shifting out of “P”. These three functions help to prevent driver’s operation error.

FEATURES

- Two types of front suspension are provided: the RFS (rigid front suspension) and the IFS (independent front suspension). The construction of the RFS is the same as that of the previous model.

- The IFS has adopted the lower torsion bar type double wishbones to achieve both steering stability and riding comfort at high levels, while maintaining the vehicle's excellent off-road drivability and durability.

- The AHC (Active Height Control suspension) + Sky-Hook TEMS, which integrates the dampening force control and vehicle height adjustment for both the front and rear suspension, is available as optional equipment.

- The Skyhook TEMS* (Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension) management rate and logic were changed to achieve the optimum shock absorbing action.

- The anti-roll control was changed to achieve stable cornering and responsive handling.

- On rough roads or others that cause a bumping sensation, the system softens the shock absorber damping force for a flatter ride.

- On roads that cause the vehicle to sway, the system controls the shock absorber damping force for a flatter ride.

- A torsion bar spring with excellent space efficiency has been adopted to achieve a larger stroke.

- The torsion bar spring has been positioned higher than the undercover and the frame side rail to prevent it from coining in contact with the ground surface.

- The height control switch is located in the shift lever upper panel. By operating the height control switch, the vehicle height can be adjusted to the three heights: High, Normal, and Low.

- The height control indicator light is provided in the combination meter. The height control indicator tight illuminates at the current vehicle height position; while under height control, it flashes at the target vehicle height



Dampening Control Switch

- A dampening control switch, which is integrated with the height control switch, is provided in the shift lever upper panel.

- By operating this switch, the shock absorber's dampening force can be adjusted in four stages, within the "Comfort - Sport" range.

When the steering wheel is centered, the stroke ratio is about the same as that of normal power steering, helping maintain straight line stability at high speeds. FEATURES

- Through the adoption of the independent front/rear auto air conditioner, the dual auto air conditioner can regulate the temperature in the rear seat area independently of the front seats, thus improving the comfort of the passengers.

- A new password type immobilizer* system helps prevent theft.

- If the ID code imbedded in the transponder chip in the ignition key matches the ID code written into the immobilizer ECU, the immobilizer and the FCV (Fuel Cutoff Valve) are turned off so the engine can be started and fuel injection can proceed.

- The immobilizer will not allow the vehicle to be started unless the ID code imbedded in the transponder chip in the key matches the ID code written into the immobilizer ECU. If the ID codes match, the immobilizer is turned off and the ignition, spark plugs, and fuel injector systems are enabled so the vehicle can be started.

ABS(Antilock Brake System)

- During braking, the ABS detects the speeds of the wheels and uses a computer to control the brake fluid pressure that is applied to all four wheels. As a result, it prevents the wheels from locking to ensure excellent handling of the steering and the stability of the vehicle.

1. Brake Control System



Brake Assist

- Brake Assist interprets a quick push of the brake pedal as emergency braking and supplements the braking power applied if the driver has not stepped hard enough on the brake pedal.

- In emergencies, drivers, especially inexperienced ones, often panic and do not apply sufficient pressure on the brake pedal.

- The Brake Assist system measures the speed and force with which the brake pedal is depressed to determine whether the driver is attempting to brake rapidly, and applies additional pressure to maximize braking performance of both conventional brakes and ABS equipped brakes.

- A key feature of Brake Assist is that the timing and degree of braking operation. When the driver intentionally eases up on the brake pedal, the system reduces the amount of assistance it provides.



VSC(Vehicle Stability Control) System

Function

- Ordinarily, a vehicle turns in a stable manner in accordance with the operation of the steering wheel. However, a strong oversteer or understeer tendency could ensure depending on unforeseen circumstances such as surface conditions, vehicle speed, or emergency avoidance maneuver. In order to improve the vehicle's stability under these conditions, the VSC system automatically controls the engine output and the braking of the wheels to dampen the strong understeer or oversteer tendency.

System Outline

- This system ensures stable cornering performance through the Brake actuator which is in the Hydraulic brake booster that effects braking control and the throttle actuator that effects engine output torque control. By detecting the operating condition of the vehicle through various sensors such as the yaw rate sensor or the G sensor, this system outputs control signals to the actuator.



Information to the driver during VSC operation:

- The Skid Control computer alerts the driverthat the tire's grip limit is about to be exceeded by simultaneously causing the slip indicator light in the combination meter panel to flash and the buzzer to sound intermittently- Ifa malfunction occurs in the VSC system, the VSC/TRC (TRC warning light and VSC OFF indicator light illuminate to alert the driver, (equipped on vehicle with VSC)

Information to the driver during VSC operation:

- The VSC and other functions operate in the all-wheel drive mode. However, the VSC function is turned OFF when the center differential is locked. At the same time the center differential lock, the VSC-OFF indicator light in the meter illuminates to inform the driver that the VSC function has been turned OFF, Ordinary, the center differential lock is used for freeing the vehicle stuck in the mud. It would be difficult for the vehicle to free itself from the mud if the engine output suppressing function of the VSC activates while the vehicle is attempting to do so. When the center differential locks in such a situation, the VSC function is turned OFF.



A TRC (Active Traction Control system) System

Function

- By controlling the brake of each wheel independently, this system provides the vehicle with a limited slip differential (LSD) effect for better off-road capability and acceleration performance on a split surface, and for better performance in freeing the vehicle stuck in the mud.

Maneuverability and Effect

- By eliminating the switch operation of the differential locks and thus allowing the driver to concentrate on driving when operating off-road or freeing the vehicle stuck in the mud, this system effectively improves the vehicle's driveability. Furthermore, compared to a system with a locked differential, this system effectively brings the essential function of the differential into full play, which makes for a nimbler vehicle performance.



Information provided to the driver when the A-TRC system is activated:

- The computer that controls the A-TRC system flashes the Active TRC operating indicator in the combination meter panels to inform the driver that A-TRC control is being effected.

Hydraulic Brake Booster Unit

- A brake master cylinder unit equipped with a hydraulically operated brake booster is provided as standard equipment on the model with the ABS (Anti-lock Brake System), thus reducing the brake pedal effort and improving the feeling during brake operation.

- The brake master cylinder unit integrates a brake booster, brake master cylinder, ABS actuator, and the P&B valve to achieve a compact and lightweight package.

Front Seatbelts

- The front seats are provided with ELR seatbelts as standard equipment, which are provided with a pretensioner or pretensioner + force limiter mechanism as standard or optional equipment, respectively.

- The pretensioner is a mechanism that instantly retracts the seatbelt in the initial stages of a collision to provide an enhanced occupant restraining effect.

- After the pretensioner is deployed and the load that is applied to the seatbelt reaches a prescribed value, the force limiter maintains the prescribed value in order to dampen, along with the airbag, the impact that is applied to the occupant's chest area.

- Seatbelt adjustable anchors that can be set to 5 steps have been provided as standard equipment.

- The seatbelt webbing and slip joint of the front seats and 2nd outer seats with adjustable seatbelt anchors were changed to realize excellent seatbelts' retractability*.

- The shapes of the adjustable seatbelt anchor plates on the center and quarter pillars are now round and sleek so as to realize excellent deployment capabilities of the curtain shield airbags*.
