President’s Welcome

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 31st

Annual Ontario Native

Education Counselling Association Conference “WAVES OF SUCCESS”.

The work of ONECA and the conference program before you

celebrate the diversity and the complexity of your work as a Native

Education Counsellors.

We are extremely proud of the program this year; it is rife with

traditional knowledge, interaction, innovation and inspiration.

“Waves of Success” was chosen as the theme because ONECA wants

to publicly showcase all of the great programs, services and people

that dedicate their lives to supporting students in our First Nation

Communities and Urban Centre’s.

I hope that you take the time to fully immerse yourself into the

workshops and activities and that you leave with your mind, body and spirit energized and ready to

share and celebrate the positive impacts we are having in the field of education.

Our collective knowledge and dedication is the reason we have been able to grow and to accomplish so

much over the past years. It has been a great pleasure to work with such committed and dedicated

people who share in the common goal of advancing the field of counselling.

AWAKENING THE BUNDLE By Jane Burning

Abstract An experimental workshop allowing people to see our scared bundle in action form. We will create in drama from the birthing experience and how we are gifted with the sacred bundle. We will discuss the lessons and how we embraced the pain body rather than the bundle which we have inside our heart center

Biography Jane Burning is a Holistic Consultant and Certified Social Services Worker. She received her diploma in Social Services in 1990 and continued on with many certifications to enhance her career. After 12 years in the field of Child Welfare and Family Violence, Jane decided to make a break from the agency world into private practice in 2004. Jane is a traditional Haudenosaunee Faith Keeper who comes from a strong lineage of Seneca women. Jane was born into traditional healers and seers from maternal and paternal ancestry. It is a humbling experience to know all that Jane carries is both from the world of academia and ancient knowledge.

EMPOWERMENT THROUGH STRESS By Bob Grynol

Abstract

This workshop goes beyond the obvious discussion on stress. Stress often affects the choices we make, sometimes negatively. This workshop helps us to come to terms with our own limitations and challenges us to get in touch with our spirituality in overcoming obstacles to our wellness. We are encouraged to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.

Biography

Bob Grynol is a gifted storyteller, dedicated to motivate, inspire and empower people of all ages. He is a retired educator, post-secondary coordinator/advisor for Seven Generations Institute, college teacher, university supervisor and ordained deacon. Bob, together with his wife Betty of 47 years have conducted countless retreats and workshops for youth and adults. Bob is a high energy guy, a mentor, counsellor, mediator and friend to many.

THE CIRCLE OF COURAGE By Martin Brokenleg

Abstract

For thousands of years, American Indian cultures nourished respectful and courageous children without employing punitive discipline. Now, recent youth development research is revealing the essential elements in raising confident, caring children. Drawing on his research with Drs. Larry Brendtro and Steve Van Bockern in their book, Reclaiming Youth at Risk, Dr. Martin Brokenleg presents "The Circle of Courage" which offers concrete strategies for creating environments in which all young people can grow and flourish.

Biography

Dr. Martin Brokenleg , co-founder of the Circle of Courage, consults worldwide for Reclaiming Youth International. He holds a doctorate in psychology and is a graduate of the Episcopal Divinity School. He is an Emeritus Professor and was most recently Director of Native Ministries and Professor of Native American Theology and Ministries at the Vancouver School of Theology in Vancouver, British Columbia. For thirty years, Dr. Brokenleg was Professor of Native American studies at Augustana College of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He has also been a director of The Neighborhood Youth Corps, chaplain in a correctional setting, and has extensive experience as an alcohol counselor. Dr. Brokenleg has consulted and led training programs throughout North America, New Zealand, and South Africa. He is the father of three children and an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe practicing the culture of his Lakota people.

MAKING SCIENCE EXCITING AND PERTINENT FOR FIRST NATION STUDENTS By Jeremy Rhodes

Abstract

Making science exciting and pertinent for First Nation students. Through a series of hand-one experiments and activities, the presenter will guide participants through a range of hands on science activities designed specifically to compliment First Nation culture that will guarantee to excite and inspire students. Be prepared to get messy, laugh a lot and have tones of fun as well as learning some important techniques.

Biography

Jeremy Rhodes is the Executive Director and Founder of Elephant Thoughts Education Outreach, a highly award winning international Educational Charity. Elephant Thoughts is one of the largest supporters of First Nation Schools in Canada, working in more than 75 communities per year with programs ranging from hands on science programs to delivering programs aimed at raising graduation rates, to cultural and environmental programs, to programs that build capacity, effective education programs and confidence in on reserve schools. Jeremy is a master teacher having taught and trained teachers all over the world. His workshops are interesting, pertinent, knowledgeable and a lot of fun!

HEALING CEREMONY By Diane Longboat

Abstract

This is a healing ceremony for our precious volunteers, workers and staff serving our Nations every day. You now have an opportunity for renewal and revitalization. Women please wear a long skirt. Please inform the ceremony helpers if you are on your moon. Please abstain from alcohol if you are going to participate in this ceremony. All offerings and tobacco will be provided on your behalf. If you wish to bring your own, please do so.

Biography

Kahontakwas Diane Longboat is a member of the Mohawk Nation, turtle clan, situated in Six Nations Grand River Territory, Canada. A ceremonial leader, educator, teacher of Indigenous spiritual ways and healer, Diane’s voice speaks to the heart of nation building for First Nations based on traditional teachings, spiritual guidance and the ancient messages of land. Diane has been involved in education for 40 years as a Builder, Teacher, University Lecturer and consultant in program design, research and culturally responsive education. She is the founder of the Office of Aboriginal Student Services and Programs at the University of Toronto and the principal in many research programs on the development of First Nations jurisdiction over First Nations education. Her research in education with First Nations political organizations is known both nationally with the Assembly of First Nations and in the province of Ontario with the Chiefs of Ontario and the Ontario Native Education Counselling Association. Diane holds a Master’s Degree in Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Most recently, Diane has been involved in the development, research and writing of First Nations education law template for First Nations Governments to exercise sovereignty and jurisdiction over lifelong learning. Spiritual wisdom is the catalyst for birthing innovation in all facets of her work for the design of new paradigms that support convergence and integration of knowledge systems.

THE SPIRIT OF POSTIVITY By Earl Lambert

Abstract

A positive attitude, an optimistic outlook and a heart filled with appreciation are known to be the root cause of many positive life benefits. Studies show that people who live with a positive outlook feel positive, experience lower levels of stress, have better health and well-being and are more apt to cope with adversity in effective ways. In other words, people with a positive attitude simply live happier, healthier and more successful lives! Biography

Earl Lambert is a Cree/Metis Warrior who continues to live out his passion as a motivational speaker and inspiration storyteller. His dynamic and entertaining way of combining music, magic, hip-hop and humour with inspirational life-lessons has made him popular with First Nations and organizations across Canada. Earl attended the University of British Columbia, where he majored in General Business with a double minor in First Nations studies and Political Science. He’s worked as an Executive Director of First Nations non-profit organizations providing educational, cultural and recreations support to families. He’s also been employed as an advocate and events coordinator for various Aboriginal homeless initiatives, a college instructor, a life-skills, business and employment facilitator, and HIV/AIDS Educator and lastly as a Programs Developer for a Metis Child and Family Services organization. He lives with a great sense of pride as warrior walking the Red Road. Driven by his passion to motivate others toward making positive life choices and to live out their dreams, he continues to inspire others with the gift of his words!

BIRCH BARK BASKET MAKING By Levi Duncan

Abstract

Birch bark basket making has been handed down from one generation to the next for a number of years. It is a traditional skill that can be used as a counselling tool.

Biography

Levi Duncan was a teacher at Muskrat Dam First Nation for 18 years and also served as Deputy Chief for 1 year. Then in 1993 he moved to Sioux Lookout to support his children as they went into their secondary school studies. It was here that he was hired at Wahsa Distance Education Centre as an Education Counsellor and has been there for 20 years now.

THE SCIENCE OF WELL-BEING AND BUILDING RESILIENCE IN CHILDREN By Louisa Jewell

Abstract

In this session you will be introduced to the fascinating topic of positive psychology: The scientific study of psychological well-being. Louisa will discuss the five pillars of well-being and practical strategies you can use to help students to maintain an optimistic mindset and improve resilience.

Biography

Louisa Jewell is the Founder and President of the Canadian Positive Psychology Association, an organization dedicated to improving the psychological health of all Canadians. Louisa is considered Canada’s leading expert on positive psychology and she is a graduate of the ground-breaking Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) program at the University of Pennsylvania. Louisa also has 16 years of experience as an organizational consultant working with leaders and teams to promote positive organization culture. Louisa is an instructor of positive psychology at the University of Toronto and regularly delivers talks, webinars and workshops to audiences around the world.

RECONNECTING TO YOUR BLUEPRINT OF HELPING By Roxanne Derhodge

Abstract

We shall explore your original passion for entering the helping field and some of the things that may make you reconsider staying gin the field. The path of helping can be both gratifying and heart wrenching all at the same time. This workshop will start to engage the side of you that you may have wanted to change the world. We will explore various ways to reconnect to your original helping self along with necessary lifestyle/self-care strategies to maintain good health as a helper.

Biography

Roxanne Der hodge has a gift of connecting with others. She decided quite early in life that she wanted to make a difference in peoples’ lives. She entered the field in her early twenties working with the Metro Toronto Police assisting victims of crime. She eventually went on to head an addictions unit with the Niagara Health System before entering the corporate consulting field where she was responsible for over 40 companies. Roxanne has a unique way of bringing her warmth and uncanny ability to read people to a platform where she is able to deliver whatever is needed in her work with people. She is an engaging presenter who makes you think on a deeper level about our lives and living it to the fullest

FIRST NATIONS EDUCATION IN THE RECONCILIATION ERA By Tim Thompson

Abstract

There is a general agreement by scholars and political leaders that improving educational outcomes among First Nation peoples is critical, both to addressing the socio-economic challenges in First Nation communities and to contribute to addressing the labour market challenges in the mainstream. It is one area which, if properly addressed can demonstrate that reconciliation between the Crown and First Nations is possible. First Nations education, unlike lands and resources, is a subject matter that does not have competing user groups. So why is it so contentious? This workshop will review the federal education system which governs how First Nations are educated and provide recommendations on changes which can be made. Participants will engage in discussion on key elements which distinguish First Nation education from the Federal System.

Biography

Karihwakeron Tim Thompson has served in a number of roles which have enabled direct participation in national policy initiatives in First Nations education, most recently as the Education Director for the Assembly of First Nations, also as the Education Coordinator for the Chiefs of Ontario and as President and CAO of First Nations Technical Institute. Karihwakeron currently serves as the President of the Hiawatha Institute of Indigenous Knowledge, an Indigenous post-secondary education institution being developed in Haudenosaunee country.

RED WORN RUNNERS - A NARRATIVE INQUIRY INTO EXPERIENCES WITH INDIGENOUS YOUTH AND FAMILEIS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL PLACES

By Dr. Sean Lessard Abstract This presentation explores work that Dr. Lessard has co-composed alongside

youth in the context of community. The Red Worn Runners are a metaphor and a symbol of working alongside indigenous youth and finding creative and safe ways to move beyond the institutional narratives of formal schooling.

Biography Dr. Sean Lessard is a Woodland Cree and his home place is Treaty 6 Territory in Saskatchewan. Sean is an Assistant Professor in Indigenous education, writer and speaker who works across Canada with Indigenous youth and communities. His areas of interest include education reform, community based curriculum, wellness, physical literacy and school sustainability.

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE By Roger King and Cheryle Hayden

Abstract Improv is a guaranteed way to lower your stress levels. Improv is about creating a scene with others, without any rehearsed lines. It’s all about teamwork, thinking outside the box and opening up your imagination. Most of all, it’s about laughter and having fun.

Biography Corporal Roger King has 19 years’ service in the RCMP and has worked with the Aboriginal Policing Section since 2003, when the unit was formed. He started his first 7 years working uniform in Saskatchewan, including a northern First Nation community. His mandate in the Aboriginal Policing Section is to work exclusively with aboriginal communities and their police services in facilitating crime prevention and community wellness programs. Such programs include suicide prevention, cyberbullying, drug awareness and others. Corporal Cheryle Hayden has 27 years in the RCMP and works with Roger in the Aboriginal Policing Section. Together, they travel throughout Ontario servicing First Nation communities. Cheryle started her career working uniform duty in Manitoba doing highway patrol and general duties, after which she transferred to Toronto to work Commercial Crime. She has also spent 6 years being an instructor at the RCMP Depot, the national training center in Regina where all new cadets go for 6 months.

emerging and Aboriginal

Through grants from the RCMP, CRIA and Carleton University, community partners and Aboriginal to empower the health and well-being of

driven initiative focuses on artistic expression and learning various art mediums and skills, as an empowering and reparative method to

ersonal experiences of Aboriginal youth who have been exposed to family, peer and domestic violence. In this way Neechee Studio will help to address the historical and present

challenges associated with family and relationship violence in aboriginal communities.
