ScreenlineCount
• Count only those
people who
completely cross
the screenline
• Count people
moving in both
directions
• A single person can
be counted more
than once
https://gis.oregonmetro.gov/trailcounter
Start here:
Step 1:
MUST use “https”, not “http”
Step 2:
Allow GPS, if prompted
This allows Metro to verify your location.
Step 3:
Fill out your first and last name.
Each person should create their own survey, even if they are working at the same site. Do not enter two peoples names in the name fields.
Step 4:
Tap the “Site” rectangle to select a site from a dropdown list• Type to search by location
description or site id. • Use a hashtag # to search
for a specific site id. E.g. “#67”
• Site numbers are also shown at the start of each option.
Tap to select a site.
Step 5:
Select a weather condition and scheduled start time.
When properly completed, the start button will be highlighted green.
Tap Start.
Step 6:
Tap the tiles to count your observations.
You can tap “Last 10” to keep track of your most recent counts.
Step 7:
When you’re all finished counting, tap “Finish Counting” to record your finish time and see count totals.
Please Note• Each count (tap) is almost immediately saved
to a Metro database.
• The exact time of each count is automatically recorded.
• Counts cannot be deleted.
• If you accidentally tapped the wrong tile for a trail user…
1. Don’t tap again for the next user of tapped type
2. Tap the correct tile to record the trail user, making up for the missed count
• If the app reports connection errors, begin using your paper form. Start writing counts at the current time interval. Do not write down counts already made through the app.

• On the finish page, tap “New Survey” to start another survey.
Having issues?
Tap FAQ on either page to help answer some questions or issues you might have.
• Resort to paper form
• Start in the appropriate 15 minute interval
What do I do if my phone dies in mid-count?
Example: Phone
dies at 9:47 on
Sunday
START
HERE!
• Towards the beginning of the session:
– Account for those people by not counting the next person of the same use type and gender (e.g. female cyclist)
• Towards the end of the session:
– Take note of exactly how many extra counts were made and of what type and report to your local coordinator
What do I do if I over-count?
• Briefly after starting:
– Start new survey and select appropriate site
• Well after starting:
– Continue to use that site number, but be sure to take note of the site you used and the site you were supposed to be at and report to your local coordinator
What happens if I enter the wrong site?
• A two hour count within the given hours is required for our standardized methodology
• If there is an emergency, you feel unsafe, or have to leave for any reason we ask that you notify your local coordinator afterwards
I need to leave early, can I start/stop counting early?
• Resort to the paper form
• Using the app in the rain could jeopardize the integrity of your phone/tablet and your device will have trouble reading a count if the screen is wet
What do I do if it is raining?
