2 LEARNING ROCKS

Students in Grades 1 and 2 have been digging deep into their science unit. Check out what they have uncovered.

3 CALL FOR ARTISTS!

Concordia students are excited as they get ready to show their true colors at the second annual Hanoi Inter-School Art Show.

If you have a moment to talk to one of the Concordia 1st or 2nd grade students, make sure to ask them “What’s in the Earth?” One Concordia first grade student, Betty, might have a few spectacular answers for you.

You see, Betty’s father is a geologist/engineer and works for a company based out of Guatemala that drills for minerals, which is what has brought their family to the South East Asia region. Her father came into the class and spoke with the Concordia students about his work, sharing pictures of the drill sites and letting the young learners experiment with slabs of core samples from about 2500 feet below the surface.

These core samples provided a real-life look at what the students have been studying in their present science unit.

A FIRST FOR VIETNAM

We’ve all seen how technology is revolutionizing classrooms and allowing students to access different possibilities in regards to their learning. In order to keep up with the different ways of incorporating technology into the classroom, International schools from all over Vietnam are coming together to hold the country’s first-ever

The Earth is not just made up of one kind of layer but many that are incredibly diverse! Some layers are hard, multicolored and even react differently when exposed to water, sunlight, or vinegar as the students learned as while conducting different tests with the rocks.

Betty’s dad also shared methods that he and his crew use to discover ‘what’s in the earth’ on any of their project sites all over the world. Students even saw a picture of Betty and her little sister on one of thoseproject sites, dressed in their complete safety gear and ready for action.

What else was learned? Learning at Concordia can really...rock.

conference on education in technology.

Just as the Internet has opened doors for collaborating on ideas, conferences like this one will be a way for educators to come together and share their resources, best practices and ultimately come away with real-life examples of how technology is being used across other international schools in order to enrich the learning experience for students.

The “Connecting Learning to Life” Conference will be held on March 2-3 on the Saigon South International School Campus in Ho Chi Minh City. For details about attending, please visit our Concordia website for registration information.

GRADES 1 & 2 DIG DEEP INTO SCIENCE

CONCORDIA NEWS FEBRUARY 2013 concordiahanoi.org2

Each participating school will submit up to 10 pieces of art to this year’s exhibition, selected by each schools’ Art teacher, for display in the traveling exhibition. Pieces are selected based on criteria set by each school that represents their students joy for art, regardless of age, grade or ability.

The Inter-School Art Show will take place throughout April and May, so stay tuned for more details on when the exhibit will arrive on Concordia’s campus.

THE JOY OF ART

Isn’t it great to live in a city where artistic talent can be seen everywhere? Some of the budding artists may come as a bit of a surprise, considering that they are still young students but equally deserving of a little showcasing. With this in mind, Concordia is excited to announce a total of eight international schools planning to participate in the second annual ‘Hanoi Inter-School Art Show’. The event itself is a mixture of student art pieces- painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, jewelry, collage and other media are expected to be part of the exhibition.

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!

BÁNH CHƯNG

Bánh chưng is a traditional Vietnamese rice dish which is made from rice, mung bean, pork and other ingredients that have been cooked for a very long period of time. According to legend, it was eaten by Prince Lang Liêu who became King Hùng Vuong’s successor thanks to his creation of bánh chưng and bánh dày, which symbolizes the Earth and the Sky, respectively.

Concordia students had a chance to learn (and eat!) this delicious rice treat that is at the center of every Vietnamese family’s Tet celebration.
