IntroductionPhilosophyConcordiaSchoolsisaministrycommunitywhichincludesclergy,schoolstaff,parents andstudents.Effortshavebeenmadetomakethisdocumentrepresentativeofallwhocomprisethis community.ConcordiaAcademydoesnotexistinisolation.Werecognizeourroleandfunctioninlightofalargercongregationalcommunity,thelocalcommunityandtheLutheranChurch-MissouriSynod.

TheRoleoftheStaffTheWordofGodisthebasisforChristianEducation. Thechallengesetbeforeusistoestablishanatmosphereforlearninginwhichwecommunicate(1)whoweareasindividuals,aswellas,(2)howwefunctionasafaithcommunity-bothgivingwitnesstoChrist.

Itisimperativethat,withparentsaspartners,effortsaremadetokeepthecentralfocusonaChristcenteredphilosophy. OurLordcommandedthatweloveoneanotherandmakedisciplesofallpeople.Wepermeatethismessagewithmethodsandmaterials,whichtakeintoconsiderationtheworldfromwhichthestudentcomes,aswellastheworldinwhichthestudentwillfunctionasayoungadult.

Webelievethateffectiveeducationincorporatesaspectsofspiritualgrowth,intellectualawareness,socialtraining,emotionaloutletsandphysicalstimulation. QualitylearningexperiencesrelatetheChristianfaithtolifeexperiencesofthechildren.

TheRoleoftheParentsWebelievetheacademic,moral,emotional,physicalandspiritualgrowthofchildrentobeaministrythatbeginsathome.Therefore,parentsaretheprimaryeducatorsoftheirchildren.Thecoordinatedeffortsbyparentsandstaffareneededtoreinforcetherelationshipbetweenparent,schoolandchild. ACCREDITATION

ConcordiaAcademyisaccreditedbyNationalLutheranSchoolAccreditationandAdvancEd.ThecurriculummeetstherequirementsoftheStateofNebraska andtheguidelinesforLutheranschools.ConcordiaAcademyisrecognizedbytheStateofNebraska.

ACHIEVEMENTTESTS

Studentscompleteon-linetestinginthefallandspringthroughNorthwestEvaluationAssociation(NWEA). This testing measures the continuous growth of each child. Results are reported toparentssothattheyareawareoftheirchild'sacademicprogress.

ADMISSIONSNewStudents:AllnewfamilieswillbeputincontactwithourDirectorofAdmissionsforinformationregardingtheschool.ThoseinterestedinapplyingforConcordiawillfollowtheonlineprocessusingTADS.A linktotheprocesscanbefoundonourwebsiteatconcordiaomaha.org.

Entranceagerequirementsareasfollows:1. Kindergarten:Mustbefive(5)yearsofageonorbeforeJuly30ofcurrent schoolyear.

2. Childrenwhohaveattendedacertifiedkindergartenorattended kindergarteninCaliforniamayenter1stgrade.

NewStudentInterview: Allnewstudentsandtheirparentsmaybeaskedto interviewwiththecampusprincipalaspartoftheTADSprocess.Thismayhappenduringaschooltourorduringaseparatelyestablishedmeeting. Thepurposeistobeginstrengtheningthehome-schoolpartnershipandbestunderstandhowConcordiacanhelpinthiseducationalpartnership. Thisisnotatestofqualificationforthe child.

Testing: Newstudentsmayberequiredtohaveaschoolreadinessdevelopmentalscreeningassessmentoranentrancetestbeforecompletingtheenrollmentprocess. Oncetheinterviewprocessandtestinghavebeencompleted,parentswillbenotifiedconcerningthe acceptanceoftheirchildintoConcordiaAcademy.

NewStudentProbation:AllnewlyacceptedstudentsareplacedonacademicandconductprobationduringthefirstquartertheyattendConcordia. Attheendofthefirstsemester,theprincipalmayextendthe lengthoftheprobationaryperiodoraskthestudenttoleaveConcordia.

PrioritiesforAcceptance:Re-enrollmentoccursduringJanuary,whencurrentConcordiafamilieshaveachancetosecureenrolledstatusfortheupcomingschoolyear.Duringthistime,registrationisconsidered completeandenrollmentissecuredoncetheapplicationiscompletedandregistrationfeeispaid.Failureto re-enrollduringthisperiodmayresultintheforfeitureofenrolledstatus. Whilenewapplicationsare welcomedatanytime,theywillnotbeofficiallyconsidereduntiltheendofre-enrollmentperiod.Afterthe re-enrollmentperiodforreturningstudentsiscomplete,newapplicantsforadmissionareconsideredonthe basisofenrollmentprioritiesthatareestablishedbytheadministration:

• Siblingsofmemberandcommunitychildrencurrentlyenrolledinschool• Newstudentsfromassociationmembercongregationswithoutsiblingscurrentlyenrolled• Newcommunitystudentswithoutachurchhome• Othernewnon-memberstudents

Ifnospaceisavailablefortheappropriategradelevel,theapplicationmaybeplacedonawaitinglist.Allfinal decisionsrestwithschoolleadership.

LEARNINGCENTERStudentsaretobepickedupby3:40pm(or10minutesfollowingthecompletionofaspecialorshortenedscheduleday).Studentsafetyandwelfareisalwaysourprincipleconcern,therefore,students mustbesupervisediftheyremaininthebuildingafter3:40pm.

StudentsmaynotarriveattheAcademycampusuntil7:00ambecausethereisnoformal supervisionuntilthattime. Whenstudentsarriveatschoolinthemorning,they reportdirectlytotheLearningCenter. TheLearningCenterisavailabletoallstudentseverymorningbeforeschool.Thefeeis$4.50perhourandbilledthroughTADS.

BeforeSchool: TheLearningCenterwilloperatefrom7:00-8:05A.M.Studentswho arriveearly(before8:05A.M.)mustbecheckedintotheLearningCenterProgramif notaccompaniedbyanadult.Therewillbenochargefrom8:05–8:20a.m. But studentswillneedtostayinthelearningcenterareauntildismissed.

AfterSchool: LearningCenteroffersafterschoolcarefrom3:30-6:00p.m.Children willbehelpedwithhomework,givenasnack,andallowedfreetimewithother children. Studentswhocannotbepickedupby3:40p.m.mustbecheckedintothe LearningCenterProgramandchargesstartfrom3:30p.m.Parentsmustenterthe buildingandcheckouttheirstudentwithamemberoftheLearningCenterstaff.

Studentsnotpickedupby6:00p.m.willbeassesseda$1.00perminutelatefee. ParentswillbebilledthroughTADS.Billswillnolongerbemailed.Pastdueaccountswillresultinnon-participation..

StudentsmaynotleaveandreturntotheConcordiacampus duringtheschooldayorafterschoolunlessunderdirect teacher,parentorschoolsponsorsupervision.Studentscarpoolingwithathletesmaynot'watch'practice andassumesupervisionbytheathleticcoach.

Studentsmaynotleavethecampuswhenstayingforco-curricularactivitiesunlessunderthedirectsupervisionoftheirparentoraschoolsponsor.Thisisofspecialconcernregardinginter-scholasticathleticcontests.Parentsareresponsiblefortheirchildrenwhenstayingforathleticcontests.

ATHLETICPARTICIPATIONPOLICY

Participatinginasportsactivityisawonderfulwaytoextendyourchild’seducation.Wearecommittedtokeepingacademicsasahighpriorityinyourchild’slife.Therefore,thefollowingpolicywilldetermineyourchild’seligibilitytoplayinaschool-sponsoredsport.

a.AthletesmustmaintainaC-ineachsubjectattheendofeachgradingperiod.b.Athletesmustbeinschoolbynoontoparticipateinapracticeoragame.

c.Studentbehaviormaycausehim/hertobeineligibleforathleticactivities.d.Ineligibleathletesmaynotparticipateingamesforone(1)week.e.Theathlete’sgradesandorbehaviorwillbereviewedattheendofone(1)weekfromthe

datetheineligibilitystarted.IfthegradeaveragehasrisentoaC-orbetterineachclasssubject,thestudentwillbeallowedtoreturntopracticeandmayparticipateingames.Iftheathlete’sbehaviorhasimprovedheorshewillbeallowedtoresumepracticeandplay.

f.Studentswhoareineligiblefora combinationofthree(3)weeksduringaseasonshallbedeclaredineligibleforthe remainderoftherespectiveseason.

g.Sportsphysicalsarerequiredbeforestudentscanparticipate.

ATTENDANCEPOLICIESStudentswithmorethan20absenceswillbereviewedforpromotionandmayberetainedif academicprogressdoesn’tmeetstandards. ConcordiaAcademyfollowstheNebraskaattendancepolicy.

ProceduresforReportingStudentAbsencesandTardies:Pleasecalloremailtheschoolassoonaspossibletoletusknowofatardyor absence. Ifthereisaplannedabsence,wewouldappreciatepriorknowledge.An answeringsystemisavailablewhenastaffmemberisnotpresenttotakethecall.

ExcusedvsUnexcusedAbsences:Concordiadoesnotconcernitselfwiththedifferenceinabsences.Schoolisimportantandtobevaluedbytheparent,student,andschool.Absentstudentsmisstimewithteachersandclassmatesthatcannotbemadeup.Forthatreason,anabsenceisanabsencewithoutotherdesignation.Plannedabsences(suchas vacations)shouldbecoordinatedwiththeteacherpriortotheabsencesothatimportantworkcanbecompletedinadvanceorduringthetimeaway.

1. Assignmentsmissedmustbemade-up. One(1)daywillbeallowedfor eachdaythatthe

childisabsent.Homeworkcanbepickedupattheend oftheschoolday.2. Whenastudenthasbeenabsentbecauseofillnessforthree(3)ormore days,they

mustpresentanotefromtheirdoctorforreadmission.

Note:Usediscretioninsendingyourchildbacktoschoolafteranillnesssuchas theflu,sorethroat,cold,etc.Astudentmustbefever-freefora24-hourperiodbeforereturningtoschool.

IfastudentisunabletoparticipateinPE,weneedanote,email,orcallfromthe parentsordoctor.Studentsarenotpermittedtoremaininaclassroomunsupervised.PermissiontoLeaveSchoolGrounds:Ifastudentneedstoleaveduringthedayforappointmentsorfamilymatters,aparentmustentertheschoolandcheckthemoutattheschoolofficepriortothestudentleavingtheschoolgrounds.

Note:Undernocircumstancesshouldaparent/guardiango to theclassroomto pickupthestudent.Theymustsignthestudentoutthroughtheoffice.

Tardiness:Thebeginningoftheschooldayisanimportanttime. Oftenthetoneofthedayissetin thefirstfewminutes. Studentsneedtobeinclassbeforeitbeginsat8:30a.m.sothat theyhavetimetoorganizethemselvesandsettledowntofocusontheirday. Whena studentarriveslateitcreatesadisruptiontotheclassandcausesthemtomiss instruction.

Pleasegodirectlytotheschoolofficetoreceiveanadmissionslipforthedaysothat attendancecanberecordedaccurately.

Excessivetardies(fiveormoreperquarter)willresultinthelossofrecesstomake upthetimemissedduringthat quarter.

Truancy:NebraskastateregulationsareinforceatConcordiaAcademy.

Attendance at school is oneof themost significant aspects of school success. Parentswill notify themain schoolofficeat402.592.8005by9:00amonthedayofthechild'sabsence. Studentswhomisstheschool daydueto illnesswillnotbeallowedtoparticipate inafterschoolactivitiesonthedayof theabsence.Studentsmustbepresentforanacademichalf-dayfollowingthelunchhourtobeeligibleforextra-curricularactivities–practiceorplay–onthatday.

NaturalConsequences:Concordiabelievesinlettingthenaturalconsequencesofanactionbeamotivationforbehaviorchange.Thenaturalconsequenceofbeinglatetoschool/classismissinganyworkthatishandedoutor gradedduringthetimethatthestudentwasnotthere. AllteachersatConcordiamayrefusecredit toworkthatastudentmissedbecauseoftheirtardinesstoclass/school. Exceptionsmaybemadefor familyemergencies,medicalappointments,orotherapprovededucationalappointmentswitha notesignedbytheresponsibleperson. Continuedtardinessmaybehandledas defiance.

AUTOMOBILESIndividualautomobilesmaybeusedtotransportstudentsonschool-relatedactivitiesattheowner’srisk. Insuchcasesthefollowingshouldbedistributedtoalldrivers:

Duringthoseinstanceswhenyoudriveyourownvehicleforaschool-relatedactivity,please note thefollowing:

• Concordiaexpectsthatnomorepassengerswillbecarriedinthevehiclethanthenumberof availableworkingseatbelts.

• Allpassengersshouldhavetheirownseatbeltanduseitwhilethevehicleisbeingoperated.• Thedriverofthevehiclemusthaveautoinsurancefortheirvehicle.• Concordiainsurancedoesnotinsurethenon-schoolownedorhiredvehicles. (Inother

words, shouldanaccidentoccur,thedriver’sinsurancewouldbeused.)• Concordiadoeshaveinsurancetoprotecttheschoolagainstlawsuitsbroughtagainstit

should anaccidentoccurandtheschoolisfoundnegligent.

BUILDINGANDPROPERTYCAREResponsible students treat property with care and respect. Students are accountable for anyintentional or accidental damage to school property. Textbooks become the student’s responsibilitywhen issued. While normal wear is expected, students will be charged replacement costs whenunnecessarydamageoccurs. Studentsmayberequiredtocovertheirbookswithasuitablebookcoverto reducewear.Studentswhoinanywaydamageorloseschoolorchurchequipmentwillbeassessedafee.Feesmustbepaidbytheendoftheyearorstudentgradeswillnot bereleased.

CHAPELStudentsattendaweeklychapelservice.Offeringsarereceivedatchapeltosupportlocal,regionalandglobalmissions.Parentsarewelcome.ChapelisheldWednesdaymorningat8:45a.m.

CHEATING/PLAGIARISMCheatingisdefinedasusing,submitting,orattemptingtoobtaindataoranswersbydeceitorbymeans otherthanthoseauthorizedbytheteacher. CheatingdoesnotexemplifyChristiancharacter development. Thestudentwhoallowscheatingtotakeplaceisasguiltyasthestudentwhocheats. Becauseworkdonefromcheatingisnotatruereflectionofastudent’sability,cheatingwillresultinthe totallossofcreditonthetestorassignmentforthestudentsinvolved.Theteacherwillnotifyparentsif theirchildisinvolvedincheating. Additionaldisciplinaryactionmayfollowbytheteacheror principal.

CHILDABUSE/NEGLECTInaccordwithConcordiapolicyandNebraskaStateLaw,schoolstaffis obligatedunderpenaltyoffineandjailtermtoreportthereasonablesuspicionofphysicalabuse, emotionalabuse,emotionaldeprivation,physicalneglect,inadequatesupervision,orsexualabuseand exploitation. Inthisveryseriousandlegallynarrowarea,theschoolwillnotcontactparentsinadvance ofmakingareporttolegalauthoritieswhichwouldbetheprocedurefollowedinmostotherlegal matters. Theclearintentofthelaw,basedontheseriousnessofthecrimeslistedabove,istomandate thatareportofreasonablesuspicionofabusebemade. Schoolstaffwillmakesuchreportsinthebest interestsoftheaffectedchildanddonot,oncereasonablesuspicionisestablished,haveanylegal alternativeexcepttomakethereporttotheproperauthoritiesfortheirinvestigationandreview.

CO-CURRICULARACTIVITIESStudentsareencouragedtoparticipateinco-curricularactivities offeredbyConcordia.Theseactivitiesareanenrichingandimportantpartofthetotalschoolexperienceandcontributetothebroad scopeoflearningexperiencesandfun. Co-curricularactivities includethesportslistedbelowaswellasavarietyofotherelectiveactivitiessponsoredbystafforparents.InterscholasticAthletics: ConcordiasponsorsteamsthatcompeteinPALSandOSAleagues.Sportsincludevolleyballandbasketball.EligibilityPolicyforParticipationinCo-CurricularActivities: Tobeeligibletoparticipateinco-curricularevents,thefollowingrequirementsmustbemet:Thestudentmustdisplaygoodcitizenshipandmustdisplaygoodeffortboth intheclassroomandontheathleticfield. Studentmisbehaviormaywarranta suspensionfromparticipationinathleticsatthefinaldiscretionofschoolleadership.Thestudentmustmeetacademiceligibilityqualifications. StudentsearningagradelowerthanaC-dueto missingorincompleteassignmentsoralackofeffort,asconcludedbyteacherandprincipal,maybedeclaredineligibleandplacedonaweeklyreview. Studentswillbeallowedto participateinpractices,buttheycannotwearauniformorplayinthegamesduringtheweek. Theprincipalexercisestherighttoreinstateeligibilitywhenrequirementsaremet. DISCIPLINEPOLICYAtConcordiaSchool,wedonotthinkofdisciplineasaformofpunishment;rather,as theteachingofself-control,attitude,spirit,andresponsibility. Itishowweattemptto“trainupachildin thewaytheyshouldgo,”asmentionedinProverbs22:6. Therefore,ourstaffinteractswithourstudents inaccordancewiththeteachingsandphilosophiesofChrist. Ourteachersencourageactionsthatarenecessaryforgrowth,redirectnegativeactionswhereitisnecessary,andultimately,attempttostopunacceptablebehaviorsthatinterferewiththelearningprocess. Studentswillbeledtounderstandthatforahappy,God-pleasinglife,itisnecessarytoloveourLordfirst,loveoneanotherasbrothersandsistersinChrist,serveandrespectoneanother’srightsandprivileges,anduseanddevelopthetalentsthattheyhavebeengiven. Promotinggoodbehaviorinstudentshasfourdistinctstages:

1. Redirection: The teacher – with the guidance of God’s Word – accomplishes theenforcement ofdiscipline. Ourteacherswilltakemeasuresintheclassroomtoinsurethattheatmosphere remainspositiveandeducational.

2. ParentalContact: Ifthestudentwillnotofferacceptableconductandcooperation,theteacherwillreportsuchbehaviortotheparentofthestudent. Themost importantoutgrowthofthedisciplineplanistheunderstandingthatboththeparentandthe teacherhaveamutualinterest–thesuccessofthechild. Anongoingcommunicationlink betweentheparentandtheteachercanhelpguidethestudentthroughasuccessfulschool year.

3. Referral: Iftheproblemcontinuesandremainsunresolved,thestudentisreferredtotheprincipal. Theprincipalwillworktowardunderstandingandresolutionwiththeteacher,andthestudent willbereturnedtoclassassoonaspossible. Theprincipalwill workwiththeteachers,parentsofthestudent,andotherstaffmemberstocreate strategiestoensurethestudent’ssuccess. Theresultmayresultinlogical consequences,notlimitedtoafurtherconference,apology, rectificationofdamages,behaviorcontract,etc.

4. Consultation: Iftheproblemcontinues,orifaseriousproblemarisesrequiringimmediate suspensionfromtheschool,aconsultationwiththestudent,parents,andbuildingprincipal mayberequired.Thestudent’sreturntoschoolwillbedeterminedasaresultof the consultationprocess. Theconditionsoftheprobationaryreturnwillbeoutlined. Ifthe problemcontinues,theprincipalmayrecommendthechildforexpulsion.

Inacaseofflagrantmisbehavior,theHeadofSchoolsmaybegintheprocessatanylevel,includingrecommendationforexpulsion.

DRUGTESTINGConcordiaSchooldoesnotrequiredrugtestingofstudentsduringtheenrollment processandtheydonottestrandomlyafterenrollmentiscomplete. However,ConcordiaSchoolretainstheresponsibilitytoassurethatstudentsaredrugfree. Tothatend,if substantiatedevidenceisprovidedtotheprincipal,astudentmayberequiredtoundergosufficient drugtestingbyaqualifiedmedicalofficer. Oncerequired,thestudentmaybeplacedonatemporary suspensionuntilconclusiveresultsaremadeavailable. Regularattendanceandconscientioushomeworkcompletionaretwo essentialingredientsforsuccess.Studentsshouldexpecttohave homeworkonmostschooldays. Acustodialparentwillonlybedeniedaccesstotheirchildwhencourtdocumentationissharedwith the school. This documentation must be specific enough that the school can clearlydeterminewhichprivilegeshavebeenrevokedandshouldincludebeginningandendingdates.

AmemberoftheConcordialeadershipteamwillcommunicatewithdistrict-providedorindependent counselifquestionsremainunansweredafterviewingofficialdocumentation.

Insuchcasesacopyofthecourtorderwillbekeptonfileintheschooloffice. Thefacultywillbeinformed,inconfidence,ofthecourtorder,andinknowingwillsharetheresponsibilitytoseethatevery effortismadeonbehalfoftheschooltoupholdtheofficialruling.

RETENTIONandPROMOTIONConcordiaSchoolbelievesineducatingthewholechild. Thus,retentionandpromotionarebasedonthechild’sage,abilitytoworkatagivengradelevel,attendanceand behavior. STUDENTRECORDSThestudentrecordprocedureofConcordiaSchoolis:

• Parentsorguardiansofstudentsareallowedtoreviewtheirchild’sfilesuponrequest,andifa studentisover18,he/shemayreviewhis/herownfiles.

• Recordswillnotbefurnishedtoindividualsoutsidetheschoolstaffwithoutwrittenauthorizationfromtheparentsorguardians

• Parents,guardians,orstudentsover18,uponexaminationofstudentrecords,mayfilearequestwiththeHeadofSchoolsthatobjectionableinformationberemoved.

TEACHERREQUESTS

Parentsarenotencouragedtorequestaspecifichomeroomteacher. Theopportunityisneverpresentedpublicly.AnyrequestmustbeinwritingandtothePrincipalwhosedecisionisfinal.

Followingpublicationoftheannualclasslists,Concordiamakeschangesonlyincasesof extremecircumstance. Thedecisionofthebuilding principalwillbefinalandwithoutappeal.

TELEPHONEUSEandMESSAGESTOSTUDENTS

Studentsmayuseroomphonesifunderthedirectsupervisionofateacher. Theofficephone willbeavailableincaseofemergenciesandunplannedevents,notforsimple forgetfulness. Phonemessagesfromparentswillbecommunicatedtotheroomssotheyarereceivedinatimely fashion.

VALUABLESConcordiarequeststhatstudentsnotbringvaluableitemstoschool.Distractingitemsare subjecttoconfiscation. Valuableitemsshouldnotbeleftunattended.All itemsshouldbeclearlymarkedwiththeowner'sname.Concordiaisnotresponsibleforlostorstolenitems.

VOLUNTEERGUIDELINESConcordiaAcademymaintainsvolunteerguidelinesthatareavailablebycontactingtheprincipal.

VISITORSTOCLASSROOMS

Wewelcomeandencourageparentstovisittheschoolforapartoftheday. Thiswillallowtheparentstoobservemanythings. Thevisitwillnotbeforevaluativepurposesandparentsshouldnotdisrupttheroomwhentheyarepresent. Pleasephoneintotheoffice,onedayinadvance,toscheduleyourvisit.Parentsshouldrememberthatdiscussionoftheirvisitwithateacherwouldprobablyrequirethemtomakeanappointmentoutsidenormalschoolhours. Wewillallowforaprospectivestudent tovisitourclassroomsasa‘shadow’ofacurrentstudent. Whenthishappens,priorarrangementsaremadethroughtheAdmissionsDirector.

WELLNESSPOLICYConcordiaAcademymaintainsawellnesspolicythatcanbemadeavailablebycontactingtheprincipal.
