Celebrating 106 years of service, the fraternity now prepares for its International Conclave, taking place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, August 3 - 8, 2021. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 9, 1914. Three young men had a vision to create a fraternal organization that would be actively involved in the life of the general community. They believed that members of such anorganization should “look” like the wider community and that potential members should be judged by their merits, rather than family background or affluence without regard to race or nationality. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse and Honorable Charles I. Brown, envisioned a brotherhood devoted to inclusivity. As a result, they established Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity as an organization committed to the ideals of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service.

From its inception, Phi Beta Sigma embraced a deep conviction to use their education and God-given skills to nurture and strengthen the communities from which they had come. The fraternity is a recognized leader in proactive community service, focusing on educating and empowering men in our communities to make a positive difference. Hence the fraternity’s motto, “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity.”

In 1920, members of Phi Beta Sigma assisted in the establishment of its sister organization, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Today, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has over 250,000 members worldwide and over 800 chapters throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and Europe. The fraternity established the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and two 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organizations including the Phi Beta Sigma National Education Foundation and the National Sigma Beta Club Foundation, the fraternity’s pre-college mentoring program for young men.

As “A Brotherhood of Conscious Men”, its educated and professional membership ranges from ages 19 to nearly 100 years old. Among these men are educators, businessmen, attorneys, medical professionals and community leaders. Sigma men are represented in the areas of professional sports and entertainment, civil rights and politics. Some of the “notable” men of Sigma include the late U.S. Congressman John Lewis, President William “Bill” Clinton, Jerry Rice, and Harry Belafonte. Phi Beta Sigma men have served in the United States Armed Forces, including several Tuskegee Airmen, and Sigma brothers have served as Head of State for three African countries including Nigerian President Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ghana President Kwame Nkrumah, and Liberia Presidents William Vacanarate Shadrach Tubman and William Richard Tolbert., Jr. The men of Phi Beta Sigma have established a positive legacy in world affairs and will continue moving the vision of its founders as it begins a new century of service to all people.
