WELCOME to the Niagara Symphony Orchestra’s thrilling 71st season. It is a spectacular one during which many old friends will return, beloved traditions will continue, and we perform great orchestral repertoire you have been waiting to experience live.

Our classical season opens with Smetana’s “The Moldau”, one of the most recognizable pieces ever composed, and Debussy’s iconic La Mer. Works of Niagara’s favourite Canadian composer, the multiple award-winning Kevin Lau, will feature on three concerts, including his cello concerto Foundation, performed by National Arts Centre Orchestra Principal Cellist, Rachel Mercer, making her debut with the NSO. After his acclaimed performance with us in the 16/17 season, Toronto Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Jonathan Crow will return, this time to the Partridge Hall stage, to perform in our continuing Sibelius cycle. The NSO takes centre-stage in the N. Walker Chamber Orchestra Series as two of our own, Principal Flute Doug Miller and Principal Trumpet Ira Zingraff are featured. The Masterworks season concludes with a star-studded cast performing beloved opera excerpts, a concert that will be talked about for years and should not be missed!

NSO photography by Robert Nowell

Family traditions have been established in Niagara and we present to you in 18/19 concerts for the whole family that you have loved in the past as we offer our annual Spooktacular, a presentation of The Snowman, and Sports Night featuring The Hockey Sweater. “Back by popular demand” is also the theme throughout our POPS! series. Canadian crooner Matt Dusk is back after five years to perform a concert of Frank Sinatra’s greatest hits. Our most requested guest artist, Joey DeBenedetto, finally makes his return for the holidays, this time joined by the breakout star of Cats on Broadway, Christine Cornish Smith. The brilliant orchestrations of Jeans ‘n Classics are showcased on the Women of Rock, a concert that also sees French-Canadian conductor Mélanie Léonard make her debut with the NSO. Finally, the POPS! program that packed houses and stunned audiences a few seasons ago will be reprised as your orchestra is featured upfront performing the classic film music of legendary composer John Williams.

Every concert this season will be an event not to be missed. We have worked hard to assemble a season designed specifically for you, the audience we treasure. Thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support. See you at the Symphony!
