Noor Gorges.  Reduction Of Windmill Waves ....

ProblemWindmills are now known to create harmful waves to humans. ...The waves negatively affect the body’s physiological functions, such as blood pressure, hear pulse, breathing rhythm, and body temperature. The constant waves created by the windmill blades are due to poor maintenance, poor machining tolerances, and high rotational speeds. The waves are created due to the vibrations that exist within the windmill components (Like the blades, generator assembly, motor shaft, bearings, and the housing). Waves are forces that travel though space and time. They are a transfer of energy from one point to another. These waves are created from a fixed point, such as the windmill blades.  Proposed SolutionThe perfect solution to elimination of the energy waves created by the windmill is to reduce vibrations through increased tolerances. The manufactures must use Go-No Go gages instead of gage blocks.

Jon Herndon, Combatting the Housing Crisis

I propose to modify currently owned housing rental properties by my father into handicap accessible properties in order to combat problems associated with the current economic crisis.

The no-kill shelter, Michigan Animal Rescue League in Pontiac, has seen an upsurge in abandoned animals, at the same time they are experiencing a loss of donations and fewer animal adoptions. This proposal enlists school aged children, in both formal settings and the home school community, to become involved in both fundraising and volunteer opportunities.

Problem: Michigan department of transportation has to prove its need for a large budget by poorly completing road repairs so that the need for more repair will remain evident and therefore require more money. Solution:Set a budget that would allow for a surplus of money at the end of the year.  This surplus would allow for any emergency road repair, such as bridges, washed out roads etc.  Also this surplus could be used for investment in private companies which would be paid back with interest creating a greater cash surplus for the state.

Problem:     It takes a lot of money to heat Wayne State in the winter and cool it in the summer. Wayne State consists of many large buildings that contain multiple entryways, windows, and vents. A lot of energy is lost from windows left open and doors opening and closing. For example, more than once when I have gone to the restroom I see windows that are left open. This is a perfect example of money wasted.  Proposed Solution:     Close windows. Keep temperatures in the hall slightly lower in the winter and slightly warmer in the summer since students will spend the majority of their time in the classroom. A lot of heat is lost in the winter form doors constantly opening and closing. Also, hallways are large areas to keep at a comfortable 72 degrees. Classrooms are smaller and require less energy to heat and cool.

Problem:Residents of Detroit a city which boasts a unemployment rate of a little over 31% are faced with a limited selection of grocers to choose from many which take advantage of their small monopolies by charging exponentially more for groceries than a suburban grocery store would with the rising cost of gas, and the tremendous amount of employers laying off residents are left to make hard decisions as to how to feed their families without cutting off other necessities. Solution:Government regulation of unreasonable inflation by grocers in poor neighboorhoods would help to combat the problem of the steadily rising cost of groceries also offering tax incentives for larger chains such as Kroger to open locations within Detroit so that there is a variety not just in grocery stores to choose from but to have larger chains that are corporate owned rather than the family owned business often seen

From: Madeline MacKenzieDate: 1-25-10Subject: Concept Paper-Block Schedule50% of all engineering students drop out or switch majors according to Don Dodge reporting on “Thoughts on business and technology”. This number is staggering. Clearly there must be a way to turn this epidemic around. I believe that there is a more approachable way for students to obtain an engineering degree. I propose to create a trial semester for Mechanical Engineering that resembles the advanced “block” studies. Colleges and universities around the country have already made the switch.Wayne State University follows the typical semester schedule. Classes typically start in the beginning of September and end in the middle of December. They pick up again the 2nd week of January and continue until Last week of April. The average full-time student will take between 12-15 credit hours in a given semester. This means a student with four classes can only devote a quarter of their time to each class. Why do professors ask for “your undivided attention”? Because they know that students can absorb much better if they are 100% focused on one thing at a time.Classes would be set up that only one subject is taught at a time. For instance instead of having four classes over a period of 16 weeks, each evenly spread out, one class would be taught solely for 3.5 weeks at a time. Cornell College made the switch to the block schedule in 1978 and is not looking back. They claim that their block classes create focus, passion, and flexibility. If a student only has one class that they need for a semester, they will be receiving up to three months off that they can spend elsewhere.

Lauren• Subject: How can the quality of residential life for Wayne State

University’s Towers Residential Suites be improved?•  •  • Problem Statement:• Sharing a living space with many other people presents many challenges.

Among these challenges are noise levels, cleanliness, conditions of shared areas and quality of floor meetings.

• Proposed Solution:• To solve the problem of excessive noise there should be stricter penalties

for sound violations.  • To help keep the dorms clean there should be extra trashcans placed in

the hallways.  There should be regularly scheduled times, perhaps every semester, to clean areas that are usually passed over.

• Thermostats in shared areas should be set to a reasonable temperature range or perhaps the resident assistants could be allowed a key so that they could change the temperature if it were too uncomfortable.

• Floor meetings should be better structured to improve usefulness of the information presented, amount of time spent, resident attitudes and attendance.  Announcing meetings at least a week in advance and increasing the formality would also help attendance.

Alex Visconti• Problem:• I am sick of driving everywhere in Michigan only to have

my suspension and back rattled because the state likes to put half-assed patch jobs together to fix the roads.  The road system has temporary short term fixes like top coats of asphalt over crumbling road beds that fall apart after a year or two of use.

•  • Solution:• The state needs to fix the roads the right way using higher

grade materials and to higher standards than what they require now, maybe up to the standards set in the autobahn.  Fixing the road beds to this high grade would be a long term solution to delays created by construction traffic.  In addition, the state needs to enforce load limits on road since it has been going on unregulated for years.

•Problem - The cost of shipping water purification systems to Haiti to help with the relief effort is to expensive to be seen as feasible.

•  •Solution - Reduce the number of water

purification systems being sent over, thus reducing the cost for shipping and preparation.
